As-salamu 'Aleykum!!

well, i've seen one too many 'Abdi's around and 'Abdi', as i've learned basically means slave, so there should be something added to it....like, AbdiAllah, AbdiWahab, Abdiwaahid, AbdiFatah, etc.

And this might sound weird, but my math teacher once told me that he met a 'woman' named, 'AbdiQaadiratun', lol....THT's not a name subhnallah- It's 'Abdiqadir', and just becoz it has a'tun' at the end doesn't make it a 'female' name.

Good beneficial thread.

There is this Pakistani female teacher in my university who is proud of having an arabic name but not after we told her what it means. Her name is Shobha meaning Suspicion!!

Also I know a boy whom his parents picked his name from a Hadeeth randomly as his name was Asha'th meaning Shaggy!! When we told them the meaning, they changed his name to Hamza :)

Lol! This is the problem, they don't know what names mean and whether they're masculine or feminine! One of my extended relatives I believe it was, named both his son and daughter with the same male name?

I still have more.

Maqsoud and Akhtar are both my father's friends. The former meaning Intended (!) and the latter More dangerous (wha??)

Another professor teaching in my university is called Nitham meaning System!

SubhanAllah this thread really made me smile but in a sad way (If you know what I mean). I mean there must be awarness among muslims. Not everything in Arabic is holy. And not every single word in the Holy Quran can be named by a person. Elephants are mentioned in the Quran, does that mean I can name my daughter/son with that name?

Wallahi brothers and sisters my mother had a friend who would pick a word randomly from the Quran and name the new poor baby. Once she landed on the word "Zina" as she thought it sounded good so she named the baby. Wallahi that's so sad. Someone told her what the word means then she changed it. Why don't they ask from the first place?

A popular style of naming among Bengali Muslims is that the name is left incomplete.

Some examples:

Ashraf Ul : Ashraf of ...
Seed Ul: Saaed of ...

Assalaamu alaykum, just a clarification here...

Shubaa (urdu)– mean suspicion or doubt.

Shobha (hindi) – noun form, also a hindu girl name meaning – ‘beauty’

Subaa (urdu) – excluding ‘h’ sound from word shubaa mean – a town or a part of a city, generally old usage. From that the word derived words subaadar and mansabdaar.( guardian of subaa)

so pakistani teacher's name should be shubaa, doubt it as shobha.

wa alaykum salaam

Good to know. Maybe her name is the second choice. But she should have told us that.

Brother do you read arabic? I did a bit of research here. Well this is a very good website for names. You can know the meanings, know whether it's a male/female name and you can know the name's origin.

Here is for Ubaidah:
http://www.alnaddy.com/names/21389_عبيدة.html

Ubaidah is a male name that is a reduction of the name Abduh as it's an arabic name. Here are some male names from the Arab long ago in the days of Ignorance and Islam: Ubaidah ibn al-Harith, Ubaida bin Humaid, and Ubaida bin Hilal

And here you can find what Abduh means:
http://www.alnaddy.com/names/21384_عبده.html

Abduh is a male name meaning AbdulAllah.

Hope I made it clear and that you are sure now :D

Two points. The Bengali's names are usually completed in their surnames, however, most of the time they still err in adding the Alif-Laam to the first name instead of the second. This seems really strange when you understand Arabic and hear that people are named Noorur and Noorul instead of Noor! Or Fadlur instead of Fadl. In most cases, the ur/ul is the prefix to Rahman! I have some Bengali friends who can't find the meanings of their names because of this lol.

The other thing, those who have the name Akhtar, then as far as I'm aware, there is a Persian name of a different meaning which sounds like the Arabic superlative form of dangerous (akhtar).

Another one is the common nickname 'mani', used for names like `Uthmaan (no I don't call my son Mani!), `Imraan, Armaan (Persian) and any name containing man/maan ... As you're probably aware, it means semen.
