Modi govt says to push for cow slaughter ban in India
r

Rescued cattle are seen at a ''goushala'', or cow shelter, run by Bharatiya Gou Rakshan Parishad, an arm of the Hindu nationalist group Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), at Aangaon village in Maharashtra February 20, 2015.

India will use all its "might" to ban cow slaughter across the country, Home Minister Rajnath Singh said in a speech to spiritual leaders, as the government moves to fulfil a poll promise of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

A renewed thrust by Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to protect cows, worshipped by majority Hindus, has led to a clamp down on beef trade run mostly by Muslims.

India is the world's second largest beef exporter and fifth biggest consumer.

Maharashtra, India's second most populous state, extended a ban on the slaughter of cows to bulls and bullocks this month. Other BJP-led states such as Jharkhand and Haryana have also tightened curbs.

"How can we accept the fact that cow slaughter is allowed in this country?" Singh said on Sunday. "We will use all our might to ban it. We will try to build a consensus."

Critics say tougher anti-beef laws discriminate against Muslims, Christians and lower-caste Hindus who rely on the cheap meat for protein, and fear they could pave the way to a nationwide ban that would threaten thousands of jobs.

India has some 300 million cattle, and animals foraging for food are a familiar sight on the rubbish-strewn streets of towns and villages. Their numbers could swell by 200,000 in Maharashtra alone as farmers abandon animals they can't sell, according to the beef trade.

Modi, who in his election campaign last year criticised the previous government for promoting beef exports, in 2011 spearheaded a ban on beef trade in his home state of Gujarat that he led for more than a decade.

There is no central law on cattle slaughter though various states have brought in their own legislation.

Maharashtra's latest ban has been widely ridiculed on social media and traders in Mumbai have shut abattoirs for days in protest.

Mohammad Ali Qureshi, president of the Bombay Suburban Beef Dealers Association, said a nationwide ban on beef will fail as people in several regions enjoy the meat that is a cheap source of protein.

"A nationwide ban on cow slaughter is impossible," Qureshi said. "If the government takes any such decision we won't sit quiet and there will be nationwide protest. They will have to regret their decision."

Assalamu'alaikum!
Pardon me,i don't mean to interfere their law or offen anybody but we too must not deny that many hindu consume on meats nowaday regardlessly,
and talking about in general of hindus world wide, some have eaten pork this definitely have gone against their hindus faith that forbid them as hinduism are into vegetarian ONLY .
But ofcouse as religion of peace , my advise to muslims in India but to respect their counterpart as the Indian's hindu in India would like to come back to the basic of their religion.
Anyway, what about if we spot hindus munching on meats in other part of the world what do we do and do we ban hindu buying hamburgers from fast food and poultry in market world-wide to help our hindu friends in making sure that hindus will stay faithful to their religion not just in India but in every corner of the earth.

They sake this cause "Slaughtering of Animal (only Cow???)" is cruel!!! So similar kinds, buffalo are not!!???

They are saying they will use chicken for lion and tigers food.
So where a single cow slaughter could enough for more then 10 Animals, now they need to slaughter more then 10 square (10*2) chicken for them.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm just Dizzy.:indecisiveness:

Need to get specific here that the specie 'cows' are very sensitive to them which they worship similarly to 'hanuman @ ape ,elephant, cobra e.t.c which holds some order in their religion of Hinduism . Hinduism religion forbid them in killing or shedding blood of other lives just for their need to live taken as selfish, altogether goes vegetarian as their mark of respect to living things.

the above explanation are an extract from my hindu friends.

We have to respect their faith - even it is different than our own. Still I am wondering, is it allowed to use cows as food to others in India (non-Hindus) after this possible ban? If not... well, they should respect others ways of life.

Religion is a very sensitive issue.Mutual understanding should b implement here, as muslims in India should observe especially India is a hindu country ,we should carefully see our need here not to offend our hindu friends as to continue living in peaceful and harmonious with each other as always do.
~May Allah swt help, protect and guide all muslims~Amin!

I can understand why they want cow slaughtering banned. Cows are sacred to their religion. Muslims have other options, like chicken, veal, and fish. And the other option is to import the beef from other countries.

This "news" plays an important factor in what the Holy Qur'an says, concerning those who worship as their fathers worshiped. "They worship as those gone before them, even though they were ignorant."

Easy say then done sis , the fact; import is much more expensive then rearing and for dairy from the animal too. IF other country has to do the rearing and butchering the animals meaning their business rival over poultry sales get 100% 'win-win' situation now because India has gone sensitive over cow issue .Still we have to observe and respect their practice, decision have to be made .

True!
and India has to keep their consistence since then, but we believe they didn't , it rather seems like a tough job for them as coming to the fact that many hindu even consume beef themselves, but of course if India feels possible that adjusting the consumers need from Christians ,not only Muslims and those inhabiting India that rely on beef as part of their daily diet intake, as must, well, good arrangement have to be made that India has say no to slaughtering of cows or eating of beef to be ban in India as a whole?
Since India is a peace and loving country surely many especially those as Indian would love to keep it that way.
