A Sign of Faith

Once a man asked the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam), “What is Eeman (faith)?” He (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) replied: “When your good deeds make you happy and your bad deeds make you sad, you have Eeman.” [Ahmad]

Firstly, what is good and what is bad? Suppose you immigrate to a country. Aren’t you bound to follow the rules in place there? Those were rules decided by human beings like you, but you are required to submit to them. You don’t have the right to live by rules you design for yourself that conflict with the system. For instance, if you decide to drive on the wrong side of the road, because you think that’s how it should be, it’d be a disaster.

When we are born, we enter Allah’s country. All that exists belongs to Him. The laws have already been decided: So we don’t have the right to decide good and bad for ourselves. When we transgress against these laws we and our fellow humans will collide much more with each other and then we must also pay the penalty for breaking the law. When human law must be obeyed, doesn’t Allah’s law have higher claim to demand submission?

Secondly, some people are bothered by their consciences pricking them. “Why do I feel bad while others sin so happily?” Instead of wondering what’s wrong with you and why you can’t be carefree like them, thank Allah that you still have some Eeman that could save you from the fire of Hell.
