Adopt a Sunnah No.11

A young Sahaabi [radhiallaahu anhu] was on his way on some errand when he passed by the Messenger of Allah [sallallaahu alayhi wasallam] who noticed a distinct difference in the dressing of this Sahabi [radhiallaahu anhu]. Rasulullah [sallallaahu alayhi wasallam] immediately reprimanded him: 'Am I not a sufficient example for you?' (Shamaail Tirmidhi Hadith120; Fathul Bari vol.10 pg.213 Hadith5791)

This heartrending statement of Rasulullah [sallallaahu alayhi wasallam] is sufficient for every believer to realise the importance of adhering to the Sunnah of Rasulullah [sallallaahu alayhi wasallam] in every facet of life.

Every aspect of the life of Rasulullah [sallallaahu alayhi wasallam] has been accurately and minutely recorded in the books of Hadith. Rasulullah [sallallaahu alayhi wasallam] had on numerous occasions exhorted the Ummah to remain steadfast upon the Sunnah and not to become affected by the ways of the Kuffaar. It was always his concern that his Ummah should not follow the previous nations in their deviations. To this end, is his warning and caution, ‘He who imitates a nation is from amongst them.' (Sunan Abi Dawud Hadith4027- Takhrijul Ihyaa Hadith851)

Rasulullah [sallallaahu alayhi wasallam] had ensured that the Sunnah remains unique and that it bears no resemblance with the manners of the non-believers in any aspect whatsoever, whether pertaining to ibaadat (acts of worship), one's appearance or personal life. A Muslim has a unique code of conduct which was chosen by Almighty Allah and personally demonstrated by the paragon of all creation [sallallaahu alayhi wasallam]. This distinction in the religion of Islam is highlighted in the Qur'aan in Surah al-Kaafiroon wherein Almighty Allah instructs Rasulullah [sallallaahu alayhi wasallam] to proclaim to the non-believers that 'lakum deenukum wa liya deen' (You have your own way of life whilst I have mine).

In Surah Hood, Allah Ta'ala states, 'And do not incline towards the oppressors (disbelievers).' Allamah Qurtubi [ra] has related the following interpretation of this Aayat, 'Do not adore their ways and do not follow them.' (Tafseer al-Qurtubi vol.9 pg.112)

One of the wisdoms behind this prohibition is that when one assumes the habit or even the appearance of any specific sector of society, this affects one's inner feelings. One becomes more inclined towards those whom he imitates. It is natural and generally accepted that those who share the same profession or have something in common experience a familiarity, irrespective of race or nationality. The closer the resemblance the stronger the bond between the two, ‘Birds of a feather flock together.’ How would one who fails to imitate the life of Rasulullah [sallallaahu alayhi wasallam] defend the personality of Rasulullah [sallallaahu alayhi wasallam]? As Muslims residing in a western country, we need to be more particular about maintaining our Islamic values and culture or else we stand to lose our identity all together.

This year, the blessed month of Rabi-ul-Awwal coincides with the month of April. During this time, some will intensify their efforts to inculcate more Sunnats in their lives whilst others will be 'fooling' none but themselves as they prefer to imitate the ways of the Kuffaar. The Ulama have cautioned that whenever any Sunnah is abandoned, it is automatically replaced with an innovation. Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Mas'ood t is reported to have warned the Ummah, 'If you abandon the way of your Prophet [sallallaahu alayhi wasallam], you would certainly deviate.' (Sahih Muslim Hadith1486)

In the light of the above, we can now understand why Rasulullah [sallallaahu alayhi wasallam] had expressed himself with the following, 'Hold on fast to my Sunnah (code of conduct) and that of my (four) rightly guided successors. Hold on to it and Grip it with your molars!!' (Sunan Abi Dawud Hadith4599; Sunan al-Tirmidhi)

Your Rabi-ul-Awwal Lessons
Dress and Appearance different from non-Muslims

1. Rasulullah [sallallaahu alayhi wasallam] said, 'He who adds to the numbers of a nation (by imitating them or joining their celebrations) is counted as one of them.' (Mukhtasar Itihaaful Maharah Hadith3944)

2. Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Umar [radhiallaahu anhu] reports that Rasulullah [sallallaahu alayhi wasallam] said, 'Distinguish yourselves from the Mushriks (polytheists) by lengthening your beards and trimming your moustaches.' (Sahih Bukhari Hadith5892)

Acts of Worship different from non-Muslims

3. Sayyiduna Amr ibn al-Aas [radhiallaahu anhu] reports that Rasulullah [sallallaahu alayhi wasallam] said, 'The difference between our fast and that of the people of the book (Jews and Christians) is the partaking of Sehri, i.e. The Jews and Christians do not partake of Sehri.' (Sahih Muslim Hadith2545)

4. Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbaas [radhiallaahu anhu] reports that Rasulullah [sallallaahu alayhi wasallam] said, 'Observe the fast on the 10th of Muharram and differ with the Jews. Therefore, add to it another fast either a day before (9th) or a day after (11th). (Musnad Ahmad Hadith2154 see Fathul Baari vol.4 pg.311 Hadith2000)

Social Conduct different from non-Muslims

5. Sayyiduna Anas [radhiallaahu anhu] states that it was the practise of the Jews that they would disassociate themselves totally from their wives who were in menstruation. They would not even eat together. Rasulullah [sallallaahu alayhi wasallam] ordered that the Muslims do not do the same. He r said, 'Do everything else besides intimate relations.' (Sahih Muslim Hadith692)

6. Rasulullah [sallallaahu alayhi wasallam] said, ‘Those who copy others are not from amongst us. Do not imitate the Jews or the Christians. For the Jews greet by pointing their fingers, and the Christians greet by beckoning with their palms.’ (Sunan al-Tirmidhi; Mirqaat vol.8 pg.470 Hadith4649; Ilmiyah). In the light of this Hadith, the Ulama have ruled that when one greets a person from a distance, one should use both his palms and fingers and also pronounce the Salaam. One should not merely indicate without saying the Salaam. (Ibid)

Funeral different from non-Muslims

7. Sayyiduna Imraan ibn Huseiyn [radhiallaahu anhu] had instructed his family that they should move quickly with his Janaazah [bier] and not delay/proceed slowly as the Jews and Christians do. (ibn Abi Shaybah vol.3 pg.166)

The mere fact that our Qiblah (direction in Salaat) was changed from Baytul Maqdis to the Ka’abah is sufficient to show that our direction in life should also be different from others

Other Acts that are Prohibited in Islam due to their resemblance with non-Believers

1. Easter Eggs and HotCross Buns: It is not permissible to sell or consume these (during Easter) because it has a direct link with the Christians.

2. To celebrate those days or occasions that non-believers commemorate, e.g. April Fool's day, New Year's day, Birthdays, etc.

3. Wedding ceremonies may be permissible, but the manner in which they are held should not mirror the manner of the Kuffaar, like the newly adopted 'candle-lit' receptions, etc. This is a practice of the disbelievers.

4. Those hairstyles that bear a direct resemblance with sinners, non-Muslims, popstars, etc. This includes the different dyes that are applied nowadays.

5. Permissible drinks which are served in wine bottles or wine glasses. Although the drink itself may be permissible, but the manner in which it is presented is impermissible.

6. To eat or drink with the left hand. This is the practice of Shaytaan. (Sahih Muslim)

PEOPLE GENERALLY IMITATE THOSE WHOM THEY LOVE! DO WE REALLY LOVE RASULULLAH [sallallaahu alayhi wasallam]?
