Donate Udhiyah for Gaza: Scholars

CAIRO — With the people of Gaza hardly able to make ends meet under the suffocating Israeli siege, many scholars are urging world Muslims to donate Udhiyah for the Palestinian people in the sealed off territory.
"Due to their hardships, the people of Gaza are the most deserving of Udhiyah these days," Pro. Wahba Al-Zuheili, the head of Islamic Fiqh Department, Shari`ah Faculty, Damascus University, told IslamOnline.net.

A financially-able Muslim sacrifices a single sheep or goat or shares six others in sacrificing a camel or cow as an act of worship during `Eid Al-Adha, to start on Monday.

According to the majority of scholars Udhiyah or sacrifice is a confirmed Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).

It reminds Muslims of the great act of sacrifice Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) and his son Isma`eel were willing to make for the sake of God.

Scholars believe Muslims should be donating the money or meat of their Udhiyah to the people of Gaza.

"Muslims slaughter thousands of sheep and cows and should be sending a share to Gaza," stressed Al-Zuheili.

The Arab Doctors Union has launched a campaign to encourage Muslims to send money to aid and charity groups to buy Udhiyah on their behalf and send to Gaza.

Campaign brochures have been distributed to mosques, companies and government agencies across Egypt.

"There has been a massive response among Egyptians to donate," Dr. Gamal Abdel-Salam, the head of the ADU's relief and emergency committee, told IOL.

"Hundreds of Egyptians are calling the committee every day to donate their Udhiyah for Gaza."

Pro. Saud Al-Faisan, the dean of the Shari`ah Faculty, Al-Imam University, Saudi Arabia, also supports donating Udhiyah for Gaza.

"If a Muslim will sacrifice more than one Udhiyah, he should keep one for (the poor) in his home country and send the other or pay its price to Gaza to help assuage its suffering," he told IOL.

The scholar explained that in case a Muslim will sacrifice just one Udhiyah, he can either distribute it among the poor in his country or send it to Gaza.

Pro. Maher Al-Sosi, professor of comparative Fiqh in the Islamic University in Gaza, stressed that Palestinians are in dire need of help.

"Gaza siege is chocking our people and the situation is deteriorating by the hour," he told IOL.

He regretted that very few sheep and cows have been allowed into Gaza because of the Israeli siege.

"We appeal to the Egyptians to allow Udhiyah into the strip."

Israel, backed by the US, has been closing the Gaza Strip's exits to the outside world since Hamas took control of the territory last year.

"As a Gazan and a scholar, I believe that sending Udhiyah to Gaza is a must," said Pro. Sosi.

Former Egyptian mufti Nasr Farid Wasil agrees.

"I support sending Udhiyah to the Palestinians. Muslims have to support their brothers in besieged Gaza."

Dr. Wasil disagrees with those who say that the poor in one's country would be more deserving of Udhiyah than the Gazans.

"I believe that Udhiyah must be sent to Gaza.

"The poor in other countries can find meat but support for those reeling under the yoke of siege, starvation and disease in Gaza is a must."
