Heros of Islam
:salam2:
The Guardian released an article on 16th October regarding the new Government strategy for anti-terrorism, Spying, to be more precise spying on innocent people (please see end of blog for link). The new strategy will put into jeopardy the community cohesion/spirit, where an individual is erred on to spy on their neighbour and to record and report any behaviour which they deem suspicious. Inevitably this will lead to the further victimisation of the Muslim community as people automatically assume that “all terrorists are Muslims”, so in order to attain information the best place to start is with the Muslims. This will only lead to the further criminalisation of the Muslim community and will breed further discontent amongst Muslims towards the government’s policies.
I can already see Non-Muslims who have no or very little understanding of Muslims/Islam reporting normal everyday activities of Muslims as suspicious. If I remember correctly there was a case a while back where a neighbour (who was a Non-Muslim) reported the suspicions activity of their neighbour (who was a Muslim). What they found very suspicious was that every time the husband of the household returned home with his male friends, the husband would keep his friends waiting outside for a little while. The husband would enter the house first and little while later he would invite them in. This lack of understanding of what was actually happening breaded the suspicion, when we all can understand what was actually happening the neighbour did not (in case anyone did not understand the husband entered the house first to ensure the women in the house were not in the room where his friends were due to enter).
Also another emphasis from the government is that Muslims spy on Muslims, again a very dangerous call. I would like to remind everyone on the ruling on spying in Islam, which we can derive from the hadith of the Prophet Muhammed (saw).
Abu Hurairah that the Messenger Muhammad (saw) said: “Beware of suspicion, for suspicion is the worst of false tales. Do not look for others faults, do not spy on one another, do not practice najash (biding over one another), do not be jealous of one another, do not hate one another and do not desert or stop talking to one another. O Allah’s worshippers, be brothers”.
This hadith is clear evidence that all types of spying on Muslims is prohibited. In addition,
It is reported by Muslim upon the authority of Abu Hurairah and in Ahmad upon the authority of Abu Barza Al-Aslami (ra) that the Messenger Muhammad (saw) said: “O you who believe from your tongues but whose Imaan has never settled in their hearts. Do not backbite Muslims, do not follow up their aworaat (e.g. spying on them or tracing their errors and personal affairs); whoever does so Allah will punish him for all his errors and will expose his affairs even if he is settled in his own home”
This is very clear and no one has doubt that spying is forbidden and is a heinous crime in Islam. Although the Muslim who hears the ruling on spying will be deterred from doing do there are others who are hell bent on doing the contrary. At the same time we must also know that there are many people in our community who are spying on Muslims and will not take heed of the warnings of the prophet. This is not a new phenomenon and these people were also around during the time of the prophet they were called ‘Munafiqeen’.
Allah informs us about the Munafiqeen, how we could sometimes be impressed by their looks, status and their smart dress, that they will speak about Islam. Allah says,
“When you look to them you are impressed by their appearance, when they speak, you listen to their words, they are as (worthless as hollow) pieces of timber propped up, (unable to stand on their own). They think that every cry is against them. They are the enemies; so beware of them. The curse of Allah is on them! How they are deluded.” [63:4]
These people have sold their religion for a world gain, which is what they get in return for information. They also believe they will get some sort of dignity or status amongst the enemy but they are deceived. Allah has referred to the Munafiqeen as people who believe they can deceive Allah and the believers,
“They (attempt to) deceive Allah and those who believe, but they only deceive themselves while they do not know.” [2:9]
“Those who ally with the kuffar instead of the believers, do they seek from them dignity? All the dignity is all with Allah.” [4:139]
We have to remember that this is a big problem today and we must take heed of trhe advise and also be aware of these people. We need to spread the correct teachings of Islam so those who have doubts about this issue can have it clarified.
“O you who believe! Take not as (your) Bitânah (advisors, consultants, protectors, helpers, friends) those outside your religion since they will not fail to do their best to corrupt you. They desire to harm you severely. Hatred has already appeared from their mouths, but what their breasts conceal is far worse. Indeed We have made plain to you the Ayat if you have sanity. Here you are! You are the ones who love them but they love you not, and you believe in all the Books [i.e. you believe in the Taurât (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel), while they disbelieve in your Book, the Qur’an]. And when they meet you, they say, “We believe”. But when they are alone, they bite the tips of their fingers at you in rage. Say: “Perish in your rage. Certainly, Allah knows what is in the breasts (all the secrets).” [3: 118-119]
