Istinjaa’

Praise be to Allaah.

1st of All see : The etiquette of bathroom

Istinjaa’ is obligatory; this means removing whatever has been passed from the front or back passages with water, stones, or anything else that is pure and will remove the impurity (najaasah) – such as pebbles or coarse tissue paper, or clean pieces of paper on which there is no mention of Allaah or any of His names – apart from bones and dung. This is to be done when something impure is emitted, of stools or urine.

But if nothing has come out apart from passing wind, then it is not obligatory to do instinjaa’.

With regard to what has to be washed, if a person has passed urine, then it is sufficient for him to wash the end of the penis, to cleanse it of urine. It is not prescribed for him to wash the anus, because nothing has come out of it.

In the case of the back passage, he has to remove any dirt from it, then wash the anal sphincter to cleanse it of any dirt that may be attached to it.

For more information see Fataawa al-Shaykh Ibn Baaz, vol. 10, p. 36; al-Sharh al-Mumti’ by Ibn ‘Uthaymeen, vol. 1, p. 88.

This is what has to do with urine and stools. With regard to semen and prostatic fluid, please see question no. 2458.

There is no doubt that if the urine or stools go beyond the place where they come out, those areas must also be washed, and the impurity and dirt must be removed from them.

This is a summary of the etiquette of relieving oneself, which it is mustahabb for the Muslim to observe when relieving himself.

1 – It is Sunnah to say “Bismillaah (in the name of Allaah)” when entering the washroom, because it was narrated from ‘Ali ibn Abi Taalib (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The eyes of the jinn are blocked from seeing the ‘awraat of the sons of Adam when one of them says, on entering the washroom, ‘Bismillaah.’”

(Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, al-Jumu’ah, 551. Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Sunan al-Tirmidhi, no. 496).

It was also proven in the hadeeth of Anas that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Allaahumma inni a’oodhu bika min al-khubthi wa’l-khabaa’ith (O Allaah, I seek refuge in You from all offensive and wicked things (evil deeds and evil spirits).”

(Narrated by al-Bukhaari, al-Wudoo’, 139)

2 – He should enter with his left foot first, and exit with his right foot first.

3 – If he wants to relieve himself in a place that is not designated for that purpose, it is recommended for him to go far away (from people).

4 – He should not face the qiblah or turn his back towards it when relieving himself, because of the hadeeth narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) in which he said: “When any one of you needs to defecate, let him not face the qiblah or turn his back toward it; face east or west” [because Makkah is south of Madeenah – Translator].” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, al-Wudoo’, 141).

5 – When urinating, a person must be careful not to let drops of urine land on his clothes or body, because it was narrated in the hadeeth of Ibn ‘Abbaas that “the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) passed by one of the gardens of Madeenah or Makkah, and he heard the voices of two men who were being punished in their graves. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: ‘They are being punished but they are not being punished for a major sin.’ Then he said, ‘No, one of them used not to take precautions to protect himself from his urine, and the other used to go about spreading slander.’ Then he called for a palm-branch, which he broke in two and placed each piece on a grave, It was said to him, ‘O Messenger of Allaah, why did you do that?’ He said, ‘May their torment be reduced so long as these do not dry out’ or ‘until these dry out.’” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, al-Wudoo’, 209).

Is it haraam to urinate standing up?

It is not haraam for a man to urinate standing up, but it is Sunnah for him to urinate sitting down, because ‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her) said: “Whoever tells you that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to urinate standing up, do not believe him. He only ever used to urinate sitting down.” (Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, al-Tahaarah, 12; he said, this is the most saheeh report on this topic. It was also classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Sunan al-Tirmidhi, no. 11). And because this is more concealing, and it reduces the risk of any drops of urine splashing up onto him.

It was narrated from ‘Umar, Ibn ‘Umar and Zayd ibn Thaabit (may Allaah be pleased with them) that it is allowed to urinate standing up on the condition that there is no risk of drops of urine splashing onto one’s body or clothes, and that one does not expose one's ‘awrah, because al-Bukhaari and Muslim narrated from Hudhayfah (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) came to a garden belonging to some people, and urinated standing up. There is no contradiction between this and the hadeeth of ‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her), because it is possible that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) did that because he was in a place where he was unable to sit down, or he did that to show the people that it is not haraam. This does not contradict the basic principle mentioned by ‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her), that he (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) urinated sitting down, because it is Sunnah, it is not something waajib (obligatory) which it is forbidden to go against. And Allaah knows best.

Fatawa al-Lajnah al-Daa’imah, 5/88

6 – He should not hold his penis with his right hand whilst urinating, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “When any one of you goes to the lavatory, he should neither touch his penis nor clean his private parts with his right hand.” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, al-Wudoo’, 149)

7 – It is not permissible to relieve oneself in the street or in the shade, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Beware of two things which provoke cursing.” They said, “What are the two things which provoke cursing, O Messenger of Allaah?” He said, “Relieving oneself on the street or in the shade.” (Narrated by Muslim, al-Tahaarah, 397)

8 – It is makrooh to speak whilst relieving oneself.

9 – It is mustahabb when coming out of the washroom to say “Ghufraanak (I ask You (Allaah) for Your forgiveness),” because it was narrated that ‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her) said: “When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) came out of the washroom, he would say, ‘Ghufraanak.’”

(Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, al-Tahaarah, 7; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Sunan al-Tirmidhi, no. 7

Assalamu alykum!

Brother IslamicFajr what is the ruling if someone whilst washing his penis, drops some water on his clothes, and is not sure if drops of urine spilled also?

Wa Alaykum Assalam Dear Brother /Ibn Uthaymin

1st of All : Do not judge something as soon as suspicion and conjecture Due to the basic principle of purifying is the Muslim man is pure

i know few Impurity like drops of urine, its purpose to proceed to the pants may be transmissible to the outer garment, But we Have islamic Rule in fiqh is "It is not ruled anything once naajis (impure) by doubt and conjecture"

Fataawa al-Lajnah al-Daa’imah,was asked like your Question and they replied

If you are certain that some drops of urine have come out, then you have to clean yourself again and repeat your wudoo’ for each prayer, and you have to wash off whatever urine has got onto your clothes. But if there is some doubt, you do not have to do that. You should not pay attention to doubts, lest you fall prey to waswaas (insinuating thoughts from Shaytaan).

Fataawa al-Lajnah al-Daa’imah, 5/106

But If you are certain that some urine has come out, then you have to repeat your wudoo’ and wash off what has got onto your clothes. If the site of the urine is not clear to you, then you should wash the parts where you think it most likely got onto, so that you can be certain that the impurity has been removed.

It says in Zaad al-Mustaqni’: If the location of the impurity is not clear, it should be washed until one is certain that it has been removed.

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) said in al-Sharh: meaning if the impurity got onto something, and its location is unclear, then it is essential to wash whatever it got onto so as to be certain that it has been removed. It should be noted that the area the impurity gets onto will be one of two things: either it will be small or it will be big. If it is big, then he should do his best to wash whatever he thinks most likely the impurity got onto, because washing all of the large area is difficult. And if it is small, then he has to wash it so that he can be certain that it has been removed. End quote from al-Sharh al-Mumti’ (1/435).

Thus you will know that a small amount of urine is not excused.

You should beware of waswasah, because it is a disease and an evil; if it gains power over a person it will cause him distress, instil doubt in him and make worship difficult for him. So beware of that.

Hence we say: Do not inspect your clothes and do not worry about this matter until it leaves you.

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) was asked: When I finish my wudoo’ and go to pray, I feel that a drop of urine has come out on my private parts. What do I have to do?

He replied: What he should do is ignore this, as enjoined by the imams of the Muslims, and not pay any attention to it or look at his private parts to see whether anything has come out or not. If he seeks refuge with Allaah from the accursed shaytaan and ignores it, it will disappear. But if he is certain, absolutely certain, then it is essential to wash off whatever urine has got on him and repeat his wudoo’, because some people, if they feel some coolness on the head of the penis, think that something has come out. But if you are certain, then it is as I have said to you. What you are saying is not incontinence, because it stops and starts, whereas incontinence is continual. But this (your case) means that one or two drops come out when you move. This is not incontinence, because once a couple of drops have come out, it stops. In this case you should wash it and do wudoo’ again, and do this all the time. Be patient and seek reward with Allaah. End quote from Liqa’ al-Baab al-Maftooh (15/184).
