there is no embarrassing in asking about anything in Islam :SMILY335::SMILY335::SMILY335:

The danger of hypocrisy
What is hypocrisy and how dangerous is it for the Muslims?

Praise be to Allaah.
Hypocrisy is a serious sickness and a great crime. It means making an outward display of Islam whilst inwardly concealing kufr. Hypocrisy is more dangerous than kufr (disbelief) and the punishment for it is more severe, because it is kufr mixed with Islam and its harmful effects are greater. Hence Allaah will put the hypocrites in the lowest level of Hell, as He says (interpretation of the meaning):
“Verily, the hypocrites will be in the lowest depth (grade) of the Fire; no helper will you find for them[al-Nisaa’ 4:145]
The hypocrites are always confused, always planning deceit and plots. Although outwardly they appear to be with the believers, inwardly they are with the kaafireen. So sometimes they are inclined towards the believers and sometimes they are inclined towards the kaafireen.
“(They are) swaying between this and that, belonging neither to these nor to those; and he whom Allaah sends astray, you will not find for him a way (to the truth — Islam)”[al-Nisaa’ 4:143 – interpretation of the meaning]
Because of the corruption of their hearts, the hypocrites are the most averse of mankind to the religion of Allaah, as Allaah tells us about them (interpretation of the meaning):
“And when it is said to them: ‘Come to what Allaah has sent down and to the Messenger (Muhammad),’ you (Muhammad) see the hypocrites turn away from you (Muhammad) with aversion”
[al-Nisaa’ 4:61]
The dealings of the hypocrites revolve around their own interests. When they meet the believers, they make a show of belief and loyalty, in order to deceive the believers and as an action of dissimulation, hoping for whatever good and war-booty they have. But when they meet their masters and chiefs, they say, we are with you in your shirk and kufr. Allaah says concerning them (interpretation of the meaning):
“And when they meet those who believe, they say: “We believe,” but when they are alone with their Shayaateen (devils — polytheists, hypocrites), they say: “Truly, we are with you; verily, we were but mocking
Allaah mocks at them and gives them increase in their wrong-doing to wander blindly”[al-Baqarah 2:14-15]
The hypocrites have many characteristics, the worst and most serious of which is disbelief in Allaah. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“And when it is said to them (hypocrites): ‘Believe as the people (followers of Muhammad, Al-Ansaar and Al-Muhaajiroon) have believed,’ they say: ‘Shall we believe as the fools have believed?’ Verily, they are the fools, but they know not”[al-Baqarah 2:13]
Among their characteristics are enmity and envy (hasad) towards the believers, as Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“If good befalls you (O Muhammad), it grieves them, but if a calamity overtakes you, they say: ‘We took our precaution beforehand’ and they turn away rejoicing”[al-Tawbah 9:50]
Among their characteristics is mockery of Allaah, His Messenger and His religion. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“If you ask them (about this), they declare: ‘We were only talking idly and joking.’ Say: ‘Was it at Allaah, and His Ayaat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) and His Messenger that you were mocking?’
Make no excuse; you disbelieved after you had believed”[al-Tawbah 9:65-66]
Among their characteristics is that they spread corruption on earth, with disbelief, hypocrisy and sins. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“And when it is said to them: ‘Make not mischief on the earth,’ they say: ‘We are only peacemakers.’
Verily, they are the ones who make mischief, but they perceive not”[al-Baqarah 2:11-12]
Among their characteristics are slander and lies. Allaah tells us about them (interpretation of the meaning):
“They swear by Allaah that they are truly, of you while they are not of you, but they are a people (hypocrites) who are afraid (that you may kill them)”[al-Tawbah 9:56]
Among their characteristics is that they enjoin what is evil and forbid what is good, and they are stingy with their wealth. Allaah says concerning them (interpretation of the meaning):
“The hypocrites, men and women, are one from another; they enjoin (on the people) Al-Munkar (i.e. disbelief and polytheism of all kinds and all that Islam has forbidden), and forbid (people) from Al-Ma‘roof (i.e. Islamic Monotheism and all that Islam orders one to do), and they close their hands [from giving (spending in Allaah’s Cause) alms]. They have forgotten Allaah, so He has forgotten them. Verily, the hypocrites are the Faasiqoon (rebellious, disobedient to Allaah)”[al-Tawbah 9:67]
Among their characteristics are greed and avarice:
“And of them are some who accuse you (O Muhammad) in the matter of (the distribution of) the alms. If they are given part thereof, they are pleased, but if they are not given thereof, behold! They are enraged![al-Tawbah 9: 58 – interpretation of the meaning]
Among their characteristics are those which were described by the Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him):
“There are four (characteristics), whoever has all of them is a complete hypocrite, and whoever has some of them has some element of hypocrisy, unless he gives it up: when he speaks, he lies; when he makes a treaty, he betrays it; when he makes a promise, he breaks it; when he quarrels, he resorts to insults.”(Narrated by Muslim, 53)
Among their characteristics is a concern with appearances and fancy speech whilst they are inwardly corrupt. Allaah says concerning them (interpretation of the meaning):
“And when you look at them, their bodies please you; and when they speak, you listen to their words. They are as blocks of wood propped up. They think that every cry is against them. They are the enemies, so beware of them. May Allaah curse them! How are they denying (or deviating from) the Right Path?”[al-Munaafiqoon 63:4]
If the kuffaar are obvious enemies from without, then the hypocrites are hidden enemies from within. They are more harmful and more dangerous to the Muslims, because they mix with them and know their situation. Allaah has decreed that the ultimate destiny of the kuffaar and hypocrites will be in Hell:
“Surely, Allaah will collect the hypocrites and disbelievers all together in Hell”[al-Nisaa’ 4:140 – interpretation of the meaning]
But because of the seriousness of the harm they cause, the hypocrites will be in the lowest level of Hell, as Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“Verily, the hypocrites will be in the lowest depth (grade) of the Fire”[al-Nisaa’ 4:145]
Because the danger posed to the Muslim ummah by the kuffaar and hypocrites is so great, Allaah commanded His Messenger to strive against them:
“O Prophet (Muhammad)! Strive hard against the disbelievers and the hypocrites, and be severe against them; their abode will be Hell, and worst indeed is that destination”
[al-Tahreem 66:9 – interpretation of the meaning]

Ps: Just switch too apple so I'm not familiar with the commands yet. I was pushing a button, before i know it it enter my unfinished post previously.

Anyway, as I mentioned earlier, the 3rd one is practicing it trough your 24/7 deeds. We can of course pronounce our faith, however what lies beneath is the business of one that he/she establish with Allah. No one can know wether one is a hypocrite or not.
Now a days whenever someone say that he/she is a mukmin most probably they refer to the verbal expression of syahadat. While the ultimate decision wether someone is a mukmin or not, I belief that it is Allah's knowledge and decision, for he is the Owner of all heart.

Salaam 'Alaikum,

MashaAllah, some really good replies from our brothers and sisters.

For the sake of clarity, a hypocrite in the linguistic/or literal sense of the word is a person who does opposite to what he proclaims to believe. In our common usage of the word, we may call a man who professes that smoking is evil and harmful and yet he himslef smokes, to be a hypocrite on account of the obvious contradiction between his words and actions.
However, in Islam (as far as i know) a hypocrite is a very complex person. Firstly, and very importantly, there is a distinction between hypocrisy of belief and hypocricy of action. This is similar to kufr. We know in Shariah that some acts which fall under the category of haraam are considered to be an acts of kufr, but they do not necessarily conclude in the person becoming (or being called) a kafir. Similarly, a person may say something which is considered to be kufr (i.e. Alcohol is halaal), but it too does not automatically lead a person to becoming a kafir. It is only when the act or the saying is preceeded by a belief that what he/she is doing is okay (and this can be for many reasons - they think it is halaal, believe the Shariah is not binding, disbelieve in Allah and so fort) does it become total kufr, which ultimately leads the person to becoming a kafir. In Shari'ah these categories are refered to as, Kufr bil lisan - disbelief of the tongue), Kufr bil A'mal - disbelief in actions, and Kufr bil Imaan - disbelief in 'Aqeedah.

In a similar vain, hypocricy has several categories. A person might do the opposite of what he says or believes and that may be called hypocricy of action, but it does not automatically mean that the person is a hypocrite. Similarly, he may utter words opposite to what he should believe or what his actions concludes of his intentions, but it does not automatically mean he has become a hypocrite. However, when his actions or words are preceded by hypocritical intentions (belief) then he truly becomes a hypocrite, for whom Allah has promised the moste severest of punishment.

The important thing to note, is that since hypocricy involves intention, which is something we can never judge, it is very difficult to call a person a total hypocrite, or at least the kind of hypocrite that deserves the severe punishment of Allah.

mufakkir: That is a very good post about hypocricy, and I think the part about intention is very important as well. It is possible for there to be a contradiction between what a person says or does in public, and what they say or do in private, without their being a hypocrite, depending on what their intentions are. One example that comes particularly to mind, is fear. If a person lives in a tyrannical country, and is afraid of being punished by their government, if they do not agree with that government in public, they may loudly agree with that government in public, while secretly hating the government very much. But this is caused by fear, and the person is not a hypocrite, they are merely afraid. The intentions of a true hypocrite are someone who acts in such a false way, in order to impress or control other people. This is a very important difference, because, as I mentioned in my previous post, it is my belief that hypocrites are going to meet a rather curious and unpleasant fate in the afterlife, in that they will be sent to an afterlife based on the lies they publicly said, and not what they truly believe. Which of course they will not be happy with, but if they complain to God, God is simply going to ask them: "If you do not believe this, then why did you say it so many times and so loudly, while you were alive?" I think God will probably forgive people who said something they did not believe because they were afraid of being punished if they did not say that. I doubt God will have much sympathy for people who said things they did not believe in order to impress or control other people.

I have noticed a few examples of non-muslim hypocrites on this site, which are people who come on this forum, and falsely claim to be muslims, for various reasons, either to change the thinking of the people here, or for other reasons. I myself am not a Muslim and have never claimed to be. I will confess that I wish to change the thinking of the people here about some things, but lying to people is not a good way to change their thinking. If you are going to change someone's thinking, you must show them the truth, real reasons why their thinking should change, not tell lies and trick them. Sooner or later lies will be found out, and if someone changes their thinking for a short time based on lies, once they find out it is lies, they will simply go back to their old way of thinking, and won't even listen to the liar ever again, to boot.

I might also point out that deliberate use of only PART of the truth to try to influence people's thinking is also a form of hypocricy. A good example of this would be a Christian attempting to convert a non-Christian, and telling them that Christianity was a very gentle religion, and quoting verses in the bible that seemed pure and gentle, while deliberately omitting many other verses in the bible that are violent or sordid. The anti-gun crowd is also good at this sort of hypocricy, they like to tell people how many people were killed by guns every year, but deliberately neglect to mention how many hundreds of times MORE people saved their lives, or someone else's life with a gun during that same year.

Thank you for your honest reply. I am judging from your comments about Christian evangelical activity, that you are not Christian either. Forgive me if i am wrong!
You sound as such a person who truly seeks to learn and for that i welcome you to this forum, even if it has been said before.
