Sarawak State has received 1.4 billion ringgit, or $438.2 million, in foreign investment for a proposed zone making halal products in Malaysia, its chief minister, Abdul Taib Mahmud, said.
Malaysia, already a world leader in Islamic finance, wants to become a global hub for the halal business that some industry groups estimate to be worth about $600 billion worldwide.
''To date we have received shows of interest for 1.4 billion ringgit of investments. They are from Taiwan and the Middle East,'' Mahmud said at a halal-products conference.
