Mars starts using animal products

Some of the UK's best-selling chocolate bars, such as Mars and Twix, will no longer be suitable for vegetarians.

Also affecting brands such as Snickers and Maltesers, owner Masterfoods said it had started to use animal product rennet to make its chocolate products.

Masterfoods said the change was due to it switching the sourcing of its ingredients and the admission was a "principled decision" on its part.

The Vegetarian Society said the company's move was "incomprehensible".

'Extremely disappointed'

Masterfoods said it had started using rennet from 1 May and non-affected products had a "best before date" up to 1 October.

Rennet, a chemical sourced from calves' stomachs, is used in the production of whey.

It will now also be found in Bounty, Minstrels and Milky Way products, and the ice cream versions of all Masterfoods' bars.

"If the customer is an extremely strict vegetarian, then we are sorry the products are no longer suitable, but a less strict vegetarian should enjoy our chocolate," said Paul Goalby, corporate affairs manager for Masterfoods.

The Vegetarian Society said it was "extremely disappointed".

"At a time when more and more consumers are concerned about the provenance of their food, Masterfoods' decision to use non-vegetarian whey is a backward step," it said in a statement.

"Mars products are very popular with young people and many will be shocked to discover that their manufacture now relies on the extraction of rennet from the stomach lining of young calves," it added.

there's only one thing that's better than chocolate bars...that would be chocolate bars with meat in them. Yum. Long live the meat eaters.

Thank you. I can eat cheese but I can not eat Doritos or Frito-Lay products. This broke my heart.

List of vegetarian Mars products
Update, 3rd May 2007: Some Mars Bars used to be vegetarian, some not, and this page told you how to work out which. However, I've now been alerted to the following message from Mars UK:

"Due to a change in the ingredients used in our chocolate recipes from 1st May 2007 many of our products now contain whey. This is a by-product of the cheese making process and uses rennet derived from an animal source. Therefore we feel it is for individual vegetarians to judge whether they are comfortable in consuming cheese products that do not bear a vegetarian symbol; we would consider our products to fall into this same category.

This includes Galaxy, Mars, Bounty, Celebrations, Maltesers, Milky Way, Revels, Snickers, Topic and Twix.

Products that are currently in store or that you may have already purchased that carry a Best Before Date of 1st October or before are still suitable for your consumption, however if you have purchased any products with a best before after this date then we will be more than happy to refund the value of the product. Please see attached lists for further information."

Looks like they've moved all their chocolate production overseas, where they don't use vegetarian whey. It's now nice and simple and I can just boycott Mars...

Fatwa on Animal Rennet!

Asslamo Allaikum,

STOP! Before Reading this; read the PREVEOUS POST!

Now that you know that your cheese or chocolate contains Whey which is from Animal Rennet.

Understand that there is a difference on opinion of this subject:

1) Imam Abu Haneefa (RA), Imam Malik (RA), Imam Ahmed Bin Hanbal (RA) consider Rennet extracted from Animals not slaughtered Islamically PURE therefore products HALAL to consume.

2) Imam Shaf'ae (RA), Imam Abu Yusuf Al-Hanafi (RA), Imam Muhammad Al-Hanafi (RA) consider Rennet extracted from Animals not slaughtered Islamically IMPURE therefore products HARAM to consume.

Disclaimer:I urge ALL not to become Scholars and started using your logic.

If you want to consume food of this nature, fine.

If you want to abstain from such foods, Al-Humdolillah, Allah (SWT) will reward you for your Taqwa.

There is nothing to Argue about!
