Tahajjud prayer

Assalaamu alaikum

Can anyone tell me about tahajjud prayer - do I have to sleep first and then wake up and do it? or if I am awake in the middle or latter part of the night anyway ( and have not yet slept) can I pray it and it will still cout as Tahajjud prayer? I hope this makes sense...and also I was told that if you start to pray tahajjud you must keep it up or its very bad...

Sahih al-Bukhari- The Book of Tahajjud
Narrated Masruq: I asked Aisha (raa): Which was the most beloved deed to the Prophet(saws)? She said: A deed done continuosly.

(Tahajjud means optional prayers to be offered from the middle to the last part of the night but before the compulsory morning prayer)
Narrated Aisha(raa): The Prophet(saws) used to offer thirteenRakas of the night prayer and that included the Witr and two Rakas Sunnah of the Fajr prayer.
So it would be good to start making a good deed and carry on with it :)
