The Devil’s Campaign

When a Muslim begins his journey on the right path, aiming for Paradise, he finds the devil in his way. Remember the devil has been around since the days of Adam. When the devil was thrown out of Paradise, he asked God to give him time to make humans astray. Since then, the devil has been planning to take humans with him to hell, to prove his point that Adam is not better than him.

Today our topic is about the devil’s campaign against the person who is beginning to practice Islam. Like the one who eats, drinks, sleeps, has friends and is far away from God until someone comes along and reminds him of God, Paradise and God’s Mercy. The person starts to hate committing sins and that is when he excludes the devil from his life. But the devil is outraged and is determined to make this young man fall back, and so he starts to put obstacles in his way.

The devil has famous entries into a person’s life who has just become a practising Muslim and the scholars have spoken about it. Take note that in the Qur’an God says that the devil whispers in the chests of people. He didn’t say that he whispers in the hearts of people. Scholars say that the human is like a house. The heart is the home while the chest is the perimeters of the garden. So imagine that a thief comes into your garden and starts whispering around your house. If you let him in, you are inviting him into your heart and the same is with the devil; if you listen to his whispers in the chest, you are allowing him to enter your heart. But if you realise there is a thief in the garden, you will not invite him in; you will throw him out so that he comes no where near you.

A young man on the program admits that he would only get closer to God around exam times. He would start praying so that God could make him succeed in his exam results. As soon as the exams were over, he would stop praying. The devil has to make you doubt that you will be able to change your life for God. But by having good, pious friends and staying away from the bad influences, a person becomes closer to God and is able to change his ways. At first it seems like a war with the devil because he tempts you with so many things while you are trying to change your way. The devil will also try to separate you from your good friends so that you are alone and vulnerable to him. Remember that you are stronger with your friends.

It is normal that when you become religious you feel peaceful and so the devil starts to fight with you. He will even make other people criticise you so that you are disheartened. He will try anything to get you to not feel these beautiful feelings. He does not want you to be close to God.

It’s great that many girls are wearing the Hijab, but if you are wearing it tight with tight clothes, try to be quick in wearing the proper Hijab which should be loose and covering your chest, with loose clothes to go with it. The devil will try to make you innovate your worship to please people, but always make your aim to please God.

In the beginning of practising religion, some people go to extremes. But this is not right. Follow the Sunnah of the Prophet and do not add to it. Take small steps to gradually build your faith, do not go over as you will soon get exhausted and go back to having weak faith.

Some people feel bored in the beginning of practising Islam and the devil tries to make you wonder why you are following this new way of life. But if you have good friends they will encourage you to keep on this path. Renew your intentions that you are doing this for Allah. If you go through problems the devil will start telling you that you are going through these problems because you have become closer to God. He will also make you doubt Allah’s Mercy and His repentance on you. But don’t fear, keep strong on the path of God and know that this is just the devil trying to bring you back to a low state of faith.

The devil’s campaign is to make you far away from God. He doesn’t want you to be happy. Will God be content with you if you keep sinning? If you have sinned, repent to God and ask Him to guide you and strengthen you on the straight path. Keep firm in your decision to be a practising Muslim and remember that your goal is Paradise.
