Composed it today Alhamdulillah:
Ummul Shaheed
By Ahmad Abu Khattab
You’d tie my shoelaces when I was little,
Before I went to school you’d give me a kiss.
Patting my clothes to rid them of dust,
And when I was gone, it was you I’d miss.
Crying for me whenever I fell sick,
Sleepless nights spent right by my side.
Teaching me the difference between right and wrong,
Teaching me to be truthful and not to lie.
A wealthy family we surely weren’t,
But always buying me the best you can afford.
Times came by when our wealth was strained,
But no matter what you thanked our Lord.
Do you remember when I bought you a bouquet?
Of beautiful flowers that I chose for you.
Half my wealth I spent on it,
But I did it to show that I love you too.
A price I cannot put on the love for you,
I’m unable to repay my priceless debt.
One day, however, I’ll give you a gift,
On the Day of Judgement where I’ll have no regret.
That is by the Will of Allah my dearest mother,
Where I shall give you this great little gift.
But in order to achieve it know that I had to go,
To meet my freedom, to meet my soul’s lift.
A handful of women I’ve passed through for marriage,
But never did my naseeb ever sprout in one.
There was always something that stopped me from marrying,
But now I realise that something greater I’ve won.
Tell me my mother do you cry over me?
If so I ask why you waste your tears?
Indeed our separation in the world was hurtful,
But in the end we’ll be sounding our joyful cheers.
You should see how freely I spread my wings,
The bright green feathers never cease to amaze.
As I lay them to rest by my bodies side,
I take in the sights of this beautiful place.
Nothing in the world do I wish to have,
Except for you to be by my side once more.
But I ask of you to be patient right now,
And know I’m alive, and in this place I soar.
When I was hit with the freedom hit,
No pain or sorrow was felt within me.
Just a sense of calmness swarmed my body,
This feeling lasted until I was finally free.
A friend I looked for in the times of demise,
But it was you who always put a smile on my face.
You don’t know how much that meant to me,
That is why in my heart you have a special place.
No wedding I had in the life of hardship,
You were unable to see my love of that life.
But if you see the wives that await me now,
Worth all the pain I faced, and all the strife.
My brothers fly alongside me as we soar,
Each one with a story of their own to tell.
A band of brothers we are in this place,
Their mothers like you, but know we are well.
The rewards for the mother, who is patient now,
Are indeed immense for you have given your son.
Given your son to your Lord, the All-Knower,
For this in the end, you truly have won.
Know that I hastily await your company,
I await that kiss that you used to give.
I shall show you around this beautiful abode,
Happy in this place where we will forever live.
I hope to see you soon flying with me,
Our wings spread out as we fly and soar.
For us to meet again and share our stories,
As we forget the world and cry no more.
