I've never understood the wisdom behind the kaaba... why do we have to face the kaaba? And if a non-muslim asks you why you worship it, how do we explain that we don't? I've researched on the internet, but it still doesn't make sense. What is the real wisdom behind the kaaba? I don't understaand :angryblue: lol
I would be really grateful if someone could answer!

Assalamo Alaikum,

While away from the Kaaba, we do not confront it. Neither it can be confronted by each person standing in long rows.

We are indeed continuously seeing, O you the Messenger, the frequent turning of your face into the Sky.*![We know your feelings of having been distanced away from Ka'aba]
For this reason, We swear-assure you that We will certainly give you the guardianship of the Qib'la'tan.
Fulfillment of this promise will make you persistently pleased.
Therefore [relax, since you know Our promise gets executed], keep fronting your face to confront the Sacred Mosque so long you are out-away from it.
And, wherever and from whatever direction you people [who have believed] have exited, thereat for reason you cause your faces to confront-face to face that Mosque, when you are out-away from it. [Ref 2:144]

Unlike Jews and Christians We the Muslims do not believe in directions. When We are in the Mosque in Mecca we all confront the Ka'aba standing circularly---each one is facing a different direction than the person standing besides him shoulder to shoulder---all directions are covered.

While away from that Mosque, we stand in straight rows, whereby each participant of Salat might not be confronting Ka'aba, therefore, injunction is to confront Masjid while away from it. Notwithstanding the length of a row that can possible be made, each one will be confronting the Mosque since its boudaries start from the vicinity of Madina and expanding almost to the entire city of Mecca.

SubhanAllah I found the following article on the home page of Islamreligion.com just after skimming through this threaD. Hope it helps:

There are more than 1.5 billion Muslims in the world, and each time they pray, they turn their faces in one direction, towards Mecca. The Islamic term for this direction is qibla. When a Muslim prepares to pray, no matter where he is, he turns towards the qibla, the direction of the Kaba. The Kaba is a small cube shaped building in the courtyard of the mosque known as Masjid Al Haram, in the city of Mecca, in the country of Saudi Arabia.

“For every nation there is a direction to which they face (in their prayers). So hasten towards all that is good. Wheresoever you may be, God will bring you together (on the Day of Resurrection). Truly, God is Able to do all things. And from wheresoever you start forth (for prayers), turn your face in the direction of Al-Masjid-al-Haram (at Mecca), that is indeed the truth from your Lord. And God is not unaware of what you do.” (Quran 2:148-149)

Muslims do not worship the Kaba, or its contents, it is simply a focal point. Muslims worship One God, the Most Merciful, and the Most Wise. God decreed that when Muslims pray they all face one direction. It is a sign of unity that encapsulates the unity embedded in the religion of Islam.

The Arabic word for prayer is salah and it demotes a connection between the believer and God; when all believers face the same direction it adds an extra dimension to the connection. The prayer connects the believers to God and the qibla connects the believers to one another. It has been said that if one could observe all the Muslims at prayer we would be able to see lines of worshippers bowing and prostrating like the petals of a flower opening and closing in unison.

The qibla was not always oriented towards Mecca. The first Muslims prayed towards the al Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. Around sixteen months after Prophet Muhammad and his followers migrated from Mecca to the city of Medina, the qibla was changed to the Kaba. According to accounts by Prophet Muhammad's companions, the change happened very suddenly. During the noon prayer, Prophet Muhammad, may God praise him, received a revelation from God instructing him to, "Turn your face towards the Masjid al Haram".
“Thus, we have made you real believers in Islamic Monotheism, true followers of Prophet Muhammad and his legal ways, a just nation, witnesses over mankind and the Messenger a witness over you. And We made the Qibla (prayer direction towards Jerusalem) which you used to face, only to test those who followed the Messenger from those who would turn on their heels (i.e. disobey the Messenger). Indeed, it was great (heavy) except for those whom God guided. And God would never make your prayers to be lost (i.e. your prayers offered towards Jerusalem). Truly, God is full of kindness, the Most Merciful towards humankind.”

“Verily! We have seen the turning of your (Muhammad) face towards the heaven. Surely, We shall turn you to a Qibla (prayer direction) that shall please you, so turn your face in the direction of Al-Masjid- al-Haram (at Mecca). And wheresoever you people are, turn your faces (in prayer) in that direction...”
(Quran 2:143-144)

Changing the direction of prayer establishes Mecca as the fixed central point for worship. It establishes a common sense or purpose.

Throughout the centuries, mathematicians and astronomers have established correct ways to determine the qibla (direction) from any point on the earth’s surface. There are two precise moments each year when the sun is directly above the Kaba, thus the direction of shadows in any sunlit place will point away from the qibla. There are also two moments per year when the sun is directly over the exact opposite position of the Kaba, thus pointing towards the qibla.

It is important the Muslims make every effort to face the right direction when praying; however, slight deviations do not invalidate a person’s prayer. Prophet Muhammad said, “What is between the east and the west is qibla”. (At Tirmidhi, classified as hasan (good) by Sheikh al Albanee) Nowadays it is easy to locate the qibla. It is a simple matter to look at a map and draw a line between your location and the city of Mecca. Compasses and computer programs that locate the qibla are readily available and most mosques throughout the world have a niche in the wall to indicate the qibla.

Islam is a religion of unity. Muslims are united by their belief in One God. They are one brotherhood united in the language and ritual of prayer and united by the direction of their worship. The qibla is not only about degrees of latitude or longitude it is about unity. It is about humankind united in the worship of the One God, Creator, and Sustainer of the universe.

Walaikkum As'alaam

The best place for answers, in my opinion are the hadiths of the Prophet (Sallah Allayhi Wa Salaam). They are a goldmine of information for the believers. One of the Hadith says that there is a replica of the Ka'ba in heaven.

Allah Subhana Wa Ta'ala ordered Prophet Ibrahim (Allayhi Salaam) and his son Ishmael (Allayhi Salaam) to build the Ka'ba, this was made a holy site so that the people can visit his house.

Prophet Muhammed (Sallah Allayhi Wa Salaam) used to face Jerusalem during the beginning of his prophet hood but was ordered by Allah Subhana Wa Ta'ala to change direction to face the Qibla at Mecca.

As Allah Subhana Wa Ta'ala knows the future, Jerusalem would eventually be overtaken by Mecca as a place of worship, therefore Mecca was made a sanctuary and a holy place.

Contrary to what the kufr believe, muslims do not worship the building itself, nor the black stone contained within it. It is their ammunition to discredit Islam.

As somebody has previously stated believers from around the world are in fact facing all the points of the compass from whereever they are worshipping.

As a side not Mecca and Medina will be the only sanctuaries that will be safe for people where the Ad-Dajjal would not be able to penetrate. In fact I think he will be defeated near Mecca itself.

The focus of the Posterity of Ibrahim alaihissalam remained always Ka'aba. They had nothing to do with Jerusalem. These are gossips spread by later generations. Allah the Exalted says:

Be thoughtful, who is he who would like to invert his inclination away from the prescribed procedure of the Community of Iebra'heim? None turns/diverts his inclination away except the one who made of himself a fool. [Refer 2:130].
