KHOST, Afghanistan - Taliban militants shot dead a teenage boy in southeastern Afghanistan for teaching English to his classmates, police said on Thursday.

Taliban militants have killed a number of teachers and students in recent years for attending government-run schools, taking part in classes for girls or what the hardline Islamist militants consider un-Islamic subjects.

Armed men arrived at the school in the Sayed Karam district of Paktia province and grabbed a 16-year-old student and dragged him outside------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What were they thinking? Why do the Taliban militants do this and claim it to be for the better of islam? It is senseless.....I think removing Taliban from the face of the earth is the ISLAMIC thing to do.

this is completely ridiculous..Allah says that we shall pursue our knowledge, to learn and learn and they are forbidding women in learning, SUBHANALLAH! I don't know what they are teaching, but that is not islam. I hope Allah opens their eyes, we will all be judged on the day of qiyama.

The taliban obviously think they are true muslims, but actually they are acting like those in the preislamic period. SUBHANALLAH!

So just because I want to educate myself to become an English and German professor it seems those people would kill me because I am a woman and teaching SOMETHING? Communication is important, SUBHANALLAH! May Allah guide those blind and people led astray by shaitan!
Do you have the article? I mean the link etc.

Are these sources reliable? Trustworthy? Has a proper investigation be launched? Sounds like the usual propaganda which the media is in love with.

Well, I have seen much about the Taliban....about how a man was so willing to let his pregnant wife die and the child before letting her see the only doctor, a male, tend to her.......and they died........sounds very extreme to me.

And the faces of the Afghan women always look so sad and old and fearful.....the Taliban are not righteous in any way...

Dear Diane, dont believe all you hear. Please remember that NATO & the Afghan government now is at war with the taliban. I'd doubt anything that come from them. Truth is often sacrificed first in wars.

I have my differences with the taliban and I think they have shown poor judgement at certain occasions and been pretty narrow minded. However, one has to acknowledge their achievements too. They ruled Afghanistan for nearly 5 years, during which they achieved stability, security, and reduced Afghanistan poppy production to negligible. Afghanistan now under NATO produce over 80% of the world poppy production and although they have controlled it for the past 5 years, not much progress has been made except that Kabul now has a "red zone" staffed mostly by Chinese "working women" and western security/military/and diplomatic staff. All these are BBC dervied info. I can give you the links if you like.

Much has been said about taliban abuse of women especially banning them from education. Well, Islamically taliban position would be indefensible if that was true. I have heard the wife of Aljazeera reporter (the only international agency to be based in Kabul during the days of the taliban) saying that a girls school was just beside their house. Why would she lie? I guess that taliban might have prioritised their limited resources into providing education for the ones that will take the burden of being bread winners (i.e. males). However, this is just a guess.

The fact that you see Afghani women looking sad on TV is not all surprising. Afghanistan is a poor country and have lived through 30+ years of war and counting. It is true that taliban did not achieve prosperty in Afghanistan, but then how much can you achieve in 5 years? Dont forget that Afghanistan was under sanctions and that only Pakistan and Saudia Arabia recognised taliban as a government. I have heard stories about shameful arm twisiting tactics from the UN in the taliban era. Such as closing UN funded bakeries because taliban refused to allow women to work in them. This meant that hungry children might have died because of this. While I dont think taliban got their priorities right there, the UN is certainly not any less guilty.

I think taliban major error in the eyes of the world is that they harbored bin laden. Following 911 taliban said that they will hand him over if the US produced the evidence. I clearly remember my English teacher (an American BTW) saying that taliban was right in doing so: they are a country with authority after all. They dared to say no to the world super power. Regardless of where you stand from the taliban, you have to admire their courage and convictions.

I could careless if they harbor BinLaden......my issues with them are what I understand mistreatment of women......I once read a book by a woman who lived in afghanistan with her step-father after her american mother had died. She was treated just awfully, she talked of how they were not allowed to have open windows, education, medical treatment, and had to wear those awful burqas....and what they call honor killings.......

interesting replies talking about how truthful the article is, but only Allah knows, we can't know... hmmm..I have seen pictures of women burnt alive by their husbands over there but well, I am not sure what to think of everything, my head is too full of everything right now, can't focus

we should also remember what American soldiers are doing in the world and why, no for the purposes they are propaganding about, but for their own little benefits.

That is true.. the media are very biased.. All views are subjective. But then my father and uncle told me that when the Talibaan were in power in Afghanistan there was no rain for the whole time that they were there. And then when Hamid Karzai came it snowed like 4m metres deep or smething! And it also started to rain like there is was no tomorrow. And rain is meant to be ALLAH (SWT)'s Blessing.. and there was no Blessings on the Afghan Land for as long as the Taliban were there..

Its true that the Media are very biased and that they only present to us what they want us to know and believe.. they only impose the preferred meaning on us.. the meaning they themselves have formulated which silences all the other meanings and we are positioned to believe what we see.. Yes that is true.. but in the case of the Taliban.. I think the media neednt to lie.. The Taliban accept all these horrific acts and claim that they have done it.. quite proudly..

subhan Allah, since when this is a measurment of one's piety ???

Your talk reminded me of the story of Aldajjal (anti-christ). He will come to a village and ask them to accept him as God, those who accept will have rain and prosperity, and those who reject will dwell in poverty, such is the magnitude of his fitna (tribulation).

Quran 49:6 - O you who believe! If a Fâsiq (liar - evil person) comes to you with any news, verify it, lest you should harm people in ignorance, and afterwards you become regretful for what you have done.

today's media would not have a better word than "fasiq" to describe it.

Allah knows best

Thats true.. I dont agree with all those Kaafir in the media.. but when you have people like the Taliban whose actions ignite the Fasiq.. you really dont know who to believe. I am not blinded by the media, But I just hate it when the Taliban proudly accept their action and their mass killings..

DONT KNOW IF TALIBAN REALLY DID THAT.What I have heard about TALIBAN in TRIBAL AREAS OF Pak is that they are not against ENGLISH.Infact one if commanders Abdullah Mehsud in Waziristan was expert in English Arabic Persian Urdu and of course Pashto.

As far as women are concerned what have heard about Taliban in SWAT Pk that they have staunch support of women due to anti wife beating policy. The TNSM organization got donation of kilos of gold .

I DONT TRUST REPORTS OF WESTERN MEDIA.They are campaigning against what they see as a threat to themselves in Central Asia.
