I am a muslim Filipino here in Mindanao. I study medicine in a jesuit schooL. The school has this tradition of praying before the start of each lecture. I would like to ask if it is OK to stand with them and do your own prayer. I am confused because someone told me that we should remain sitting because if you stand it is as if you are following their way...

Thanks...

Salaamalikum,

There is a lot of unanswered questions I have.....

Is there separation of "church & state" in the Philippines? Are they praying out loud? If so, then I would ask the school principal to exclude yourself out during this time. What time is the prayer? Maybe you can go to a quiet room and perhaps do Zuhr prayer. Are there any other Muslims? What are they doing?

The school should be cognizant that not everyone has the same faith. You should definitely speak to your parents, guidance counselor, or principal about this.

In America, they have "the pledge of allegiance," but we Muslims don't pledge to a flag, we pledge to God.

Yes, there is a separation of church from the government. However, religious schools like that are private and before students get to enroll in that type of school they are required to sign a waiver to abide by the rules and regulations so the students doesn't have a way but to follow them since they agreed to the terms of agreement UNLESS if the school admin is soo considerate, then they can ask for a re-consideration.

I finished highschool in a Catholic school runned by RVM nuns (Religious of the Virgin Mary :astag:) and we faced the same problem. However, our parents fought the admin and told the nuns they'd pull out their children if they won't be considerate. Imagine pulling out half of the students, won't that cause bankruptcy for those nuns :D
