It means that before he was born his father was not technically a "father"

Say he was a "man", but when his son was born, only then he became a "father" - therefore he is as old as his son.

Is it just me who feels like i'm going in a circle?

In short, his dad got the title "Father" on the same day as he(i.e the son) was born
