:salam2:
brother/sister I hope that you are in the best of your health and imaan

I have a question in Surah 51 Aya 47
وَالسَّمَاءَ بَنَيْنَاهَا بِأَيْدٍ وَإِنَّا لَمُوسِعُونَ [٥١:٤٧]
With power and skill did We construct the Firmament: for it is We Who create the vastness of pace.

this is what my translation says, But listenning to Dr Zakir naik he said that this verse talks about the expanding universe

I didn't find that in any translation please help
Thank You

And also i heard some people say that is the modern translation should Quran be translated into modern Arabic or ancient arabic please help? and explain
thank you verymuch

:salam2:It is "and verily we are constantly expanding it "not it is we who created the vastned of space!!even a school child wouldn t make such an error ,it is perfectly understandable for every contemporary Arab speaking person,it has nothing to do with the presupposed fact of ignoring "ancient" arabic as a justification....I seriously wonder why with all the technology available nowadays,i assume very capable individuals, who may have spent years in studying Islam as well as the Arabic language can t even translate the word of the creator correctly, may allah swt forgive us all.fi amani llah,be good dear brother.

salaam akhi,if allah swt wanted to say that it was he who created the vastness of space he would have said"wa inna khalakna wassaa assamawaat"...etc or somehting similar to that instead here he is insisting on the fact that it is a continous process by saying wa inna lamowassioun!which means and verily we are expanding it!remember that the ayah starts usings a verbe in the past tense AKA and the universe we "built" it with our own hands!he uses a past tense when reffering to the creation of the universe , implying that if he is expanding it in the present it must be a continous process. He uses the verbe youwassiou to discribe an act of his, which means to expand to enlarge to make bigger,as simple as that and he is saying with insistance that it is he himself who is expanding it.

In my german translation of the quran they translated it very well,i don t grasp why it would be hard to understand or translate.obviously that must be a verz bad translation and maybe translation really need to be controlled more strictly by some bilingual ulama authority inshallah. One can only translate the meanning of the quran,i guess some linguistical sacrficices are genuinly made in the process trying to be true to the meanning ,but i must admit that this is a pretty big one which doesn t relate the meanning at all.

These are four translations that I got

Muhsin Khan: With power did We construct the heaven. Verily, We are Able to extend the vastness of space thereof.

Yusuf Ali: With power and skill did We construct the Firmament: for it is We Who create the vastness of pace.

Pickthal: We have built the heaven with might, and We it is Who make the vast extent (thereof).

Transliteration: Wa As-Samā'a Banaynāhā Bi'ayydin Wa 'Innā Lamūsi`ūna

Sahih International: And the heaven We constructed with strength, and indeed, We are [its] expander.
