What my history book says about islam?

Salam my brother's and sister's

In my school book "world history and geography", were on the chapter about islam. I read in another place about the word "Jihad" and it said it meant the inner struggle to do what is not wrong(i think it said that) and alot of people mis-interpret that. My text book said this about it though.

" For the sake of Islam, Abu-Bakr invoked jihad. The word Jihad means "striving" and can refer to the inner struggle against evil. However, the word is also used in the Qur'an to mean an armed struggle against unbelievers. For the next 2 years, Abu-Bakr applied this meaning of jihad to encourage and justify the expansion of islam. Under Umar the muslim countries conquered Syria and lower egypt that were part of the byzantine empire."

Now im really confused on the meaning of Jihad since it has 2 meanings. It said Abu-Bakr used the meaning to expand islam so muslim armies took over other countries. My question is that if Jihad has 2 meanings like it said (inner struggle against evil, Struggle again unbelievers) , when is it ok to use the struggle against unbelievers when like when the muslim conquests took countries under Umar.

Thanks for your responses

this is obviously a christian book since their favorite topic is "islam was spread by the sword".

foolish idiots who don't know that you cannot force someone to convert by a gun or sword. The Byzantine Empire took the arab lands first by force. Umar (RA) only recaptured them and freed them from the cruel Byzantium slavery.

The Romans captured the philistine (palestinian) lands by force. they captured the palestinians and jews and slaughtered them like animals. after islam, the arabs reconquered the lands and claimed them back from the romans who were killing jews and christians and forcing pagan traditions on the early christians such as Isa is part of trinity etc.

jihad means 'struggle' and the struggle can be a military struggle against oppression. the very first jihad was the Battle of Badr.

yeah Abu Bakr (ra) was fighting the ridda wars - people claimed to be prophets and not pay Zakat i think - so they were in clear error there. - Didnt Abu Bakr (ra) let them back into Islam?

Umar (ra) had no choice but to fight the Persians and Byzantines. They wer 2 super powers of there time and wouldnt just take the Arabs lightly. Those wars were inevitable realy.

Abu-Bakr applied this meaning of jihad to encourage and justify the expansion of islam.

This is definitely an incorrect wording for the purpose of these battles. It certainly conveys that Islam was spread by the sword. I am not too familiar with the history of how Islam was spread after the prophet (pbu) departure. I hope someone more knowledgeable can shed some light on this topic as I am going to face the same issue at my son's school at some near future point.

This is an interesting thread.

:salam2:

jihad, has many definitions. i would recommend that you read the various hadith regarding jihad, because i'm not sure if history textbooks or news media will give you the correct information. so where else but the quran and sunnah to find out the correct way or ways to view jihad.

read Madinaht ul Ilm (i forget the author but its a very good book MashaAllah)

did you ask the other author for his source also? or did you blindlyl accept his words?

But Maybe the Ottomans did it for their own gain??

this is exactly what christian missionaries want you to think. slowly you start to doubt your own religion. starting with a very important part which is jihad against oppression. if christians can get you to renounce jihad, then they can oppress you all they want.

i'll pray to Allah to guide you and strengthen you iman
