Punish with Love

Allah is sufficient.
There is a close link between frustration and aggression just as their is an interaction between anger and punishment. Human nature abhors boredom and human desire is in a perpetual struggle for freedom from the shakles of law. Yet, if this world had been left at the mercy of the unbridled desires of men, we would have created a hell on earth.

Almighty Allah therefore put in place structures for reward and punishment so that the human race may appreciate the significance of law. Whenever a Muslim finds himself in any position where he is charged with the duty of determining reward or punishment, he should know that he is only an agent of change, and that the ultimate basis of punishment itself lies in love.

Parents, teachers, bosses, and leaders must therefore not allow anger or hatred to come into the issue of punishment. An offfender must be punished with love. It is your love for him that must propel you to award him such a punishment that will reform him and not destroy him or harden his haert.

In our dealings with young adults, we often allow the experiences we have had with them to put us into taking such decisions that may destroy them completely. Hatred must be totally absent during punishment. An offender must be made to see the reason why he must be punished. He should be made to realise that the judge, teacher, parent or boss loves him and is at pain to award the punishment which had become inevitable if he must be helped.

This is very true and very wise. Punishment is a mercy. It should never reveal hatred. Punishment should be postitive and constructive.

However, the ways of punishment differ according to the nature of people you are dealing with. As a teacher I can say that for some of my students it is enough to give them a look rather than saying any tough word.
