This topic has been discussed *numerously* accompanied by evidence and authentic sources...I think it would be a good idea to search it on TTI..I am sure you will end up with a lot of thread of this sort..and thus answer your question and then some..so take advantage of that 
The brother said "in muslim lands" as in..in countries where Islam is *the* established religion or it is the religion of *absolute majority* of the population..and just off the top of my head..take the Arab region for example..you got yourself 22 *established* Muslim countries due to population..so yes Muslim *are* everywhere..but in some regions/countries they make up *the absolute majority*...thus if someone apostatizes and causes fitna *there*..their case will be reviewed according to the laws of *that land*..according to the discretion of the leader and/or judges of the land..and according to the *impact* of their actions on the Muslim society/community they live in..and for the record nobody *gets killed* in Islam..even in secular law it's not called "killing"..it's called "capital punishment"..and in Islam captial punishment..is the EXTREME of resorts..and *every* criminal verdict or conviction is concoted through *valid*..*fair*..and *established* procedures..regardless of how trivial or serious it might be

Meaning no body can force anybody from embracing Islam...but once you are Muslim there is no such thing you can leave Islam (this is what my sheikh told me during my reversion, he asked me repeatedly did anybody force me from embracing Islam after I confirmed to him "no" many times until I almost get fed up then only he was willing to accept my reversion. In fact I was asked to take an oath to confirm no body forced me. When I have to change my identity card again I was asked to take oath. Actually I must admit, I was forced, to abandon Islam by my family.
But be informed that the punishment can be imposed only to those openly declare renouncing Islam. This is for their betrayal (see my case, how many times I was asked to confirm my intention?). Before this is done the person will be taken into custody, counselled and given enough time to repent. If he/she insist on renouncing Islam than capital punishment will be last solution. We can't do the same to hypocrites.
On the other hand, do you know same thing being done by kuffar to those embracing Islam? I know many cases where the family slaughtered their son/daughther when they announced about reverting to Islam? You may not aware that in one case 3 months old baby of a revert was slaugthered (yes slaugthered) together with his parents, they were sheltering in a small cabin after being chased out from home. I can't elaborate further coz it is very sensitive issue in my place. For my case, me and my wife received death threat if we refused to abandon our reversion to Islam. To avoid being killed we took shelter at secret location for 2 years. I wonder why kuffar doing this?
