Salam,
One of my fathers favorite dishes is Beef in red wine or Guiness sauce, now I know we are not allowed to consume alchol but recipy books tell you to cook out the alcohol content as it makes the sauce taste harsh.
Question is,if I cook out the alcohol, can I taste the sauce as it cooks?
(ps,dad's non Muslim)

A muslim is advised to not even sit at a place where alcohol is being consumed. How then is it okay to use it for cooking?

a little chore your father will enjoy

You have to cook something for a good three hours to eradicate virtually all traces of alcohol. as a non-Muslim, alcohol isn't prohibited for your father.
he should taste the sauce while it cooks.

Praise be to Allaah.

It is not permissible to eat dishes cooked with alcohol, as ALL the alcohol is not evaporated with cooking or heat. Refer to the following, quoted from the famous Mayo Clinic:

[Begin quote]

Many people believe that because alcohol is sensitive to heat, it is eliminated with cooking. However, not all the alcohol content of alcoholic drinks is removed with heat; it depends on the type and time of cooking. For instance if you add beer or wine to boiling liquid, then immediately remove it from the heat, 85 per cent of the alcohol content will remain. If you light the alcohol, as in flambé dishes, 75 per cent will remain. Even after simmering the dish for one and a half hours, it will still have 20 per cent of the original alcohol content.

It is only if you simmer the mixture for two or more hours, (as you would with a wine-based beef casserole), that as little as five to 10 per cent of the original alcohol content remains.

Praise be to Allaah.

The fact that alcohol is forbidden in Islam is a well established fact and no Muslim has any excuse for not knowing it. It is one of the major sins that doom a person to Hell. This prohibition is mentioned in the Holy Book, where Allaah, may He be glorified and exalted, says (interpretation of the meaning):

“O you who believe! Intoxicants (all kinds of alcoholic drinks), and gambling, and Al‑Ansaab (stone altars for sacrifices to idols etc), and Al‑Azlaam (arrows for seeking luck or decision) are an abomination of Shaytaan’s (Satan’s) handiwork. So avoid (strictly all) that (abomination) in order that you may be successful”

[al-Maa’idah 5:90]

This prohibition is general and applies to all manners of using alcohol, whether in food or in drink. It is not permissible to use it in food or drink in any way whatsoever.
So it is not permissible to marinade meat in alcohol or to soak it in it, and it is not permissible to cook with it at all. In that which is permissible there is sufficient and we have no need of that which is forbidden. The Muslim is enjoined to avoid alcohol completely, so we should boycott restaurants that use alcohol as an ingredient in their food and in preparing and cooking food, rather we should advise them and exhort them and warn people against them.

And Allaah knows best.
Islam Q&A
Ten people have been cursed with regard to alcohol, including the one who buys it.

It was narrated that Anas ibn Maalik said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) cursed ten with regard to alcohol: the one who squeezes it (the grapes etc), the one for whom it is squeezed, the one who drinks it, the one who carries it, the one to whom it is carried, the one who pours it, the one who sells it, the one who consumes its price, the one who buys it and the one for whom it is bought.”

Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 1259; Ibn Maajah, 3381.

This hadeeth was classed as saheeh by Shaykh al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Tirmidhi, no. 1041.

I use vanilla in my baking and I read the ingredients and it says alcohol, I dont know if this is the same alcohol that intoxicates you are not but it is used in alot of baking, such as cakes ect.. I think the alcohol is used to preserve the vanilla flavour or something..not sure.. is it possible this is not really THAT alcohol..there is also stuff like rubbing alcohol, is that intoxicating alcohol, i'd asume so, but im stuck on the vanilla one..could someone help me with an answer please, taking vanilla out of some food can totally change the way its suposed to taste and ruin it.

This is my opinion. No fatawa InshaAllah from my side. I think you should say him alcohol is haraam for muslims to consume as well as give it others consume or its recipes. So its not wise for myself to serve the dish that is made from alcohol, to taste the dish is further than that.
Islam is true religion other than that are all false and baatil. Allah made the deen complete, its on us to follow it in every sense InshaAllah ! so calling him to Islam would be better than any act and leaving rest to Allah.- jazakAllahu khair.

Allaah, the Most High, said to His Prophet Muhammad (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam):
Say, O Muhammad (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam): Indeed my Prayer, my sacrifice, my living and my dying are all purely and solely for Allaah, Lord of all the Worlds. There is no share in any of that for other than Him. That is what my Lord ordered me, and I am the first of this nation to submit to Allaah as a Muslim. [Soorah al-An'aam 6:162-163]

This is question i wanted to ask too

Coming from a Greek Cypriot background, i do miss many of the Greek dishes that have wine in the sauce.
I looked at Turkish versions of Greek dishes as our cuisines are almost identical, but found alcohol is not so haram in Turkey & they drink & use it in cooking.
So i looked at Lebanese, Egyptian & Persian cuisines.
I couldn't find any non alcoholic solutions to replacing wine.
I tried grape juice & all i can say is DON'T because it was not nice.
So my new idea is this-
Is it still haram to use non alcholic wine as this is now available in the UK?
If anybody knows, please let me know?
