As-salaamu `alaykum

If someone narrates to you something on our Prophet, sall-Allaahu `alayhi wasallam, without mentioning a narrator or some reference, then do not believe it instantly.

Why need whole night to get forgiveness from Allah subhanahu wataala, when you can get it in 1 minute!

Allahumma anta rabbee la ilaha illa ant, khalaqtanee wa-ana AAabduk, wa-ana AAala AAahdika wawaAAdika mas-tataAAt, aAAoothu bika min sharri ma sanaAAt, aboo-o laka biniAAmatika AAalay, wa-aboo-o bithanbee, faghfir lee fa-innahu la yaghfiruth-thunooba illa ant.

0 Allah! You are my Cherisher. There is no deity except You. You have created me and I am Your servant and as far as possible, I abide by my solemn promise and covenant (which I made to You). I seek Your protection against the consequences of my wrongdoings. I fully acknowledge the grace You have bestowed upon me and I confess my faults. So pardon me my sins as none besides You can pardon sins.

The Prophet, Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Aalihi Wa Sallam, added, "If somebody recites it during the day with firm faith in it and dies on the same day before the evening, he will be from the people of Paradise and if somebody recites it at night with firm faith in it and dies before the morning he will be from the people of Paradise."
Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 8, Book 75, Number 318

or pray 2 rakah saltul tawbah: Abu Bakr al-Siddeeq (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) say: “There is no one who commits a sin then purifies himself well and stands and prays two rak’ahs, then asks Allaah for forgiveness, but Allaah will forgive him.

:salam2:

Sayed Al Istaghfar is the best/most excellent manner of seeking forgiveness and it literally translates as 'Chief of seeking Forgiveness'.

However, this doesn't mean or suggest that one shouldn't strive during the day or night in order to make tawbah and seek Allah swt's forgiveness.

"By the One in whose Hand is my soul. I certainly ask forgiveness of Allah and repent to him more than seventy times a day". Sahih Al Bukharee Volume 8, Book 75, Number 319

This narration is just 1 example that shows that Prophet (PBUH) used to perform tawbah other than Sayid Al Istaghfar.

Tawbah is something beloved to Allah swt and certainly should be done to best of our ability.

"By Allah! If you did not commit sins, Allah would have taken you away and brought a people who seek Allah's forgiveness, and He would forgive them". Saheeh Muslim Vol.4 Number 6522

This shows the extent to which Allah swt loves the seeking of forgiveness and that He loves those who ask for His forgiveness.

PS : By this post, I am only clarifying the excellence of tawbah to my ability . I am in no way supporting the idea of reciting surah ar rahman all night as there seems to be no legitimate authentic source from the Sunnah for this act.

Asalaamu Alaikum Wr Wb, there are only two hadith that I know of that mention the virtues of this Surah and they are:

The Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) went to the companions and recited Surah ar Rahman but they were all quiet. He told them that he went to the jinn and recited it to them and they were responsive. And when he would recite the verses ‘And which of the favours of the Lord will you deny’ the jinn would respond ‘There is nothing among your bounties that we can deny, all praise belong to Allah’[Tirmidhi, Ibn al Mundhir, Al Adhama & Hakim 2/474]

Abdullah Ibn Mas’ud (radiAllahu anhu) reported that the Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) said, ‘Everything has an adornment, and the adornment of the Qur’an is Surah ar Rahman’[Bayhaqi in Shuab al Eiman]

I think you most likely misheard. Although one who prays Surah Mulk before sleeping is saved from the punishment of the grave.

When you hear of any virtues which state that all previous sins will be forgiven then this refers to minor sins as major sins can only be forgiven through sincere repentance with the intention of not repeating the action again and if need be asking the person whom you have wronged for forgiveness aswell.
