Fasting to achieve a goal?

Asalaamu alaikum -

Is there daleel for fasting to achieve something? I am seeing all over facebook to "Fast for the people of Egypt". I thought that fasting was for ALLAH only, and not a bargaining chip. Or am I reading all that wrong?

Here is a comment: "Fast tomorrow and ask Allah to accept your fast and make it a means for the Egyptian people to be safe, strong and free to worship Him!". The person who said this is of questionable aqeeda; I have never heard of using fasting as a means to help someone - at least not in Islam, but I have in Christianity.

I agree with you. But I wouldn't call it bargaining. More like, "I'll sacrifice something for Allah, and if it pleases Him, May Allah Listen to my cry. If not, then Praise Allah, anyway."

Nothing to lose, and nothing to gain, but a little hope.

You were right in your initial post. You should fast to win Allah's pleasure and gain lot of hasanah.

As for praying for people of Egypt and muslims all over the world, it can be done in sujood, in tahajjud, while doing worldly matters and so on. It is however wrong for someone to prescribe a fast on a particular day which is not found in Sunnah just to show solidarity with some people.

Allah Subhanahu wa-ta'ala said: "Fast is only mine and for it I give speciall reward!" (Hadith Qudsi)

And like "BrotherInIslam7" said we can make duas for our brothers and sisters from Egypt and ask Allah to help them InshA-allah. Also there are no proves in Sunnah that this what you have mentioned above was the practise of our beloved Prophet Mohammed s.a.w.s., and Allah knows the best.

That's what I thought. I've learned a lot from this - the least of the lessons is I should get rid of Facebook. Its not how I want to spend my time.
