The Virtues and Sunnah's of Jummah

Ali Ibn Abu Taalib (RA) narrated: on the pulpit in the mosque of Kufah: When Friday comes, the devils go to the markets with their flags, and involve people in their needs and prevent them from the Friday prayer. The angels come early in the morning, sit at the door of the mosque, and record that so-and-so came at the first hour, and so-and-so came at the second hour until the imam comes out (for preaching). When a man sits in a place where he can listen (to the sermon) and look (at the imam), where he remains silent and does not interrupt, he will receive a double reward. If he stays away, sits in a place where he cannot listen (to the sermon), silent, and does not interrupt, he will receive the reward only once. If he sits in a place where he can listen (to the sermon) and look (at the imam), and he does not remain silent, he will have the burden of it. If anyone says to his companion sitting besides him to be silent (while the imam is preaching), he is guilty of idle talk. Anyone who interrupts (during the sermon) will receive nothing (no reward) on that Friday. Then he (the narrator) says in the end of this tradition: I heard the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) say so. (Abu Dawood 1046)

1. Jummah preparations should begin on Thursday such as clipping the nails, removing of the hair etc (Ihya aul-Uloom, vol. 1, page 161)

2. To have a bath (Ghusl) (Bukhari, Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah)

On one Friday, Rasulallah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: "O Muslims! Allah Ta'ala has made this day a day of Eid. So have a bath on this day, whoever has perfume should apply it, and use the Miswaak.
(Ibn Majah)

3. To use Miswaak (Ibid)

4. To use Attar (Perfume) (Ibid)

5. To wear nice clothes (Abu Dawood, Chapter of Ghusl on the day of Jummah)

6. To proceed early as possible to the Masjid for Jummah

Rasulallah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: "On the day of Jummah, the angels stand at the entrance of that Masjid in which Jummah salaat is to be offered. They write down the name of the person who enters the Masjid first, and thereafter the name of the person who follows, and they continue doing this. The person who entered first will receive the reward of sacrificing a camel in the path of Allah; the one who followed him will get the reward of sacrificing a cow, thereafter a chicken, thereafter the reward of giving an egg as charity in the path of Allah. Once the khutbah commences, the angels close the register and begin listening to the khutbah. “ (Bukhari and Muslim)

7. To walk to the Masjid if possible for every step is a reward of a years Nafl Fast (Tirmidhi)

8. One should listen very attentively to the khutba even if one does not understand. One should not speak or even warn another to keep quite while the khutba is in progress.

9. To try to sit as close as possible to the Imaam. (Ibn Majah, Tirmidhi)

10. If the Saffs (rows) are already filled, one should not jump over the shoulders of the musallies in order to get to the front. (Abu Dawood)

11. One should not fiddle with clothes or fingers but listen attentively (Ibn Majah)

12 & 13 do not have any basis from Quran and Sunnah.

14. To read: Surah Al A’ala (Sura no 87) in the first rakaat of Jummah Salah and Surah Gaathia (Surah no 88) in the second rakaat. (Bukhari)

15. Related by Hakim and Bayhaqi, from Abu Sa`id “Whoever recites Surat al-Kahf on Friday, light shall shine forth for him between the two Fridays.” (Ibn Hajar, Talkhis al- Habir)

16. Rasulallah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) is reported to have said, “Recite Durood upon me in abundance on the day of Jummah since they are presented to me.” (Ibn Majah)

17 . Making abundant dua on Jummah

Rasulallah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: "There is such an hour on Friday that if any Muslim makes dua in it, his dua will definitely be accepted.” (Bukhari, Muslim)

18 . Sending Durood/Salawaat on the Prophet PBUH on Friday.

Rasulallah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said "The best of days is Friday; so increase in conveying peace and blessings on me that day, for your blessings will be submitted to me." The people asked, "O Messenger of Allah, how can our blessings be submitted to you while you will be decayed?" He (peace be upon him) said, "Allah has prohibited the earth to decompose the bodies of Prophets." (Sunah Abu Dawood, Sunan an-Nasaee al-Jami', Sunan Ibn Majah & others)

19. Abu Hurraira narrated that Rasulallah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: The five daily prayers, and from one Jummah to the next, are an expiation for whatever sins come in between, so long as one does not commit any major sin. (Muslim, 233)

20. It was narrated from Abu Hurraira (Ra) that Rasulallah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: Whoever does Ghusl then comes to Jummah, and prays as much as Allah decrees for him, then listens attentively until the khutbah is over, then prays with him (the imam), will be forgiven for (his sins) between that and the next Jummah and three more days. (Muslim, 857)

Al-Nawawi (Ra) said:

The scholars said that what is meant by his being forgiven between the two Jummah and three more days is that a good deed is worth ten like it, so he will be rewarded with ten rewards for each of the good deeds that he did on Friday. Some of our companions said: what is meant by what is between the two Jummah is from Jummah prayer and the khutbah until the same time on the following Friday, so that it will be seven days, no more and no less, then three days are added making ten in all.

21. Coming early to Jummah brings a great reward.

Abu Hurraira (Ra) narrated that Rasulallah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: “Whoever does Ghusl on Friday like Ghusl for janaabah, then goes to the prayer (in the first hour, i.e., early), it is as if he sacrificed a camel. Whoever goes in the second hour, it is as if he sacrificed a cow; whoever goes in the third hour, it is as if he sacrificed a horned ram; whoever goes in the fourth hour, it is as if he sacrificed a hen; and whoever goes in the fifth hour it is as if he offered an egg. When the imam comes out, the angels come to listen to the khutbah.” (Bukhari, 814 and Muslim, 850)

22. If a person walks to Jummah prayer, for every step he will have the reward of fasting and praying qiyaam for one year.

It was narrated from Aws ibn Aws al-Thaqafi that Rasulallah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: Whoever does Ghusl on Friday and causes (his wife) to do Ghusl, and sets out early, and comes close to the imam and listens and keeps quiet, for every step he takes he will have the reward of fasting and praying qiyaam for one year.” (al-Tirmidhi, 496)

Ibn al-Qayyim (Ra) said in Zaad al-Maâ’aad, 1/285:

Finally after quoting the hadith which speak of the virtues of Jummah prayer:

What we have quoted, when taken all together, indicates that the expiation of sins from one Friday to the next is subject to all the conditions mentioned above being met, namely doing Ghusl, cleaning oneself, putting on perfume, wearing one's best clothes, walking in a calm and dignified manner, not stepping over people, not pushing between two people, not offending others, praying nawafil prayers, listening attentively and avoiding idle speech.

May Allah give us the ability to act upon all of these virtuous deeds and Sunnah of Rasulallah (Pbuh). Ameen

Four Rakaats of Sunnah before the Jummah Khutba

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Assalaamu `alaykum waRahmatullahi Wabarakatuh

The issue of four rakaats salaah before the jummah salaat is well substantiated and proven from the books of Hadith. Many Muhaditheen such as Ibn Abi Shayba, Abdur Razzaaq (rahimahumaallah) etc have set aside chapters in their Hadith books to discuss this issue.

It is sunnat to perform four rakaats of salaah before the jummah salaat. Consider the following Ahadith:

1.كان يصلي قبل الجمعة أربعا وبعدها أربعا

“Ali (radiyallaahu anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) used to perform four rakaats salaah before the jummah salaah and after the jummah salaah” (I’laaus Al-Sunan, vol 7, pg 13, Idaratul Al-Quran)

The chain of narrators in the above narration is good. (Tarhut Al-Tathreeb, vol 3, pg 36, Ilmiyya)

2.كان رسول الله يركع قبل الجمعة أربعا وبعدها أربعا

“Ibn Abbas (radiyallaahu anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) used to perform four rakaats of salaah before and after the jummah salaah” (I’laaus Al-Sunan, vol 7, pg 13, Idaratul Al-Quran)

The above hadith with the chain of narrators that appear in Tabrani is good. (I’laaus Al-Sunan, vol 7, pg 13, Idaratul Al-Quran)

3.عن أبي عبد الرحمن السلمي قال : كان عبد الله يأمرنا أن نصلي قبل الجمعة أربعا ، وبعدها أربعا

Abu Abdir Rahman Al-Sulami reports: “Abdullah (bin Mas’ood) used to command us to perform four rakaats salaah before jummah and after the jummah salaah” (Musannaf Abdir Al-Razaaq, vol 3, pg 247, Idaratul Quran)

The chain of narrators in the above Hadith is authentic. (Athaar Al-Sunan, pg 303, Imdaadiyya)

4.عن عبد الله قال كان يصلي قبل الجمعة أربعا

“Abdullah (bin Mas’ood) reports that Rasulullah (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) used to perform four rakaats before the jummah salaah” (Musannaf Ibn Abi Shayba, vol 4, pg 114, Al-Majlis al-Ilmi)

5.عن صافية ، قالت : رأيت صفية بنت حيي رضي الله عنها ، صلت أربع ركعات قبل خروج الإمام للجمعة ، ثم صلت الجمعة مع الإمام ركعتين .

Saafiyah (radiyallaahu anha) reports: “I saw Safiyyah Binti Huyay (radiyallaahu anha) performing four rakaats of salaah before the Imaam came out for jummah, then she performed two rakaats of jummah salaat with the Imaam” (Nasbur Al-Raayah, vol 2, pg 207, Makkiyya)

6.عن إبراهيم قال كانوا يصلون قبلها أربعا.

“Ibrahim (Al-Nakh’ee) reports that the Sahaba used to perform four rakaats of salaah before the jummah salaah” (Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah, vol 4, pg 114, Al-Majlis al-Ilmi)

7. Abdullah Bin Mas’ood used to command the people to perform four rakaats of salaah before the jummah salaah as understood from the above Ahadith. This is an indication that Abdullah Bin Mas’ood used to consider these four rakaats as Sunnat Muakkadah. In fact the Muhaditheen classify the Athar of Ibn Mas’ood as “Marfoo’ Hukman”. (I’laaus Al-Sunan, vol 7, pg 12, Idaratul Quran)

And Allah knows best

:salam2:

JazakAllahu Khayran for bringing that up. I have points 12 and 13 as they have no basis from Quran and Sunnah.

During Jumuah Khutbah one should listen attentively to khateeb and not do anything apart from that. The Khutbah is part of Jumuah Salah so one should not recite any Quran or other form of Dhikr. Rather the command is to listen attentively to the Khateeb.

If the Prophet's name is mentioned, you can repeat SallAllahu Alleihi Wa Sallam with your lips InshaAllah. And Allah Knows best.

Durood is usually used in Indian Subcontinent, it means to send blessing on Prophet SallAllahu Alleihi Wa Sallam (or Salawat).

And it is virtuous to send more blessings on Prophet SallAllahu Alleihi Wa Sallam on Friday from reported prophetic traditions.

And Allah Knows best.. Wasalaamalaykum waa rahmatullahi

these 2 below ARE ALSO AUTHENTIC ACCORDING TO SHEIKH AL-ALBANEE (RAHIMAHULLAH)

But 7."" To walk to the Masjid if possible for every step is a reward of a years Nafl Fast (Tirmidhi) "" can you paste the exact refrence of where in tirmii is this...

It was narrated from Aws ibn Aws al-Thaqafi that the Messenger of Allah (Pbuh) said: Whoever does Ghusl on Friday and causes (his wife) to do Ghusl, and sets out early, and comes close to the imam and listens and keeps quiet, for every step he takes he will have the reward of fasting and praying qiyaam for one year.” (al-Tirmidhi, 496)

inshalah i will post asap about there validity .

UPDATE: It is AUTHENTIC

Aboo Dawood reported (no. 345) from Aws ibn Aws ath-Thaqafee (radiallaahu ‘anhu):
I heard Allaah’s Messenger (salallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) say:

quote:
“Whoever washes his head on the day of Jumu’ah, and takes a bath and arrives in time, and he walks and he does not ride, and he draws close to the imaam, and he listens and he does not speak. Then for every step which he takes, there will be for him the reward of a year: the reward of fasting it and standing in Prayer.”

Shaikh al-Albaanee said this hadeeth is (saheeh) authentic.

Narrated Abu Huraira (Radi-Allahu 'anhu):

Abu-l-Qasim (the Prophet) (Sallallahu 'Alaihi Wa Sallam) said, "On Friday
there is a particular time if a Muslim happens to be praying and invoking
Allah for something good during that time, Allah will surely fulfill his
request." The Prophet (Sallallahu 'Alaihi Wa Sallam) pointed out with his
hand. We thought that he wanted to illustrate how short that time was.

Bukhari Vol. 8 : No. 409

Scholars say this special hour is between Asr and Maghrib on Friday. So we should make extra effort to make recitation of Quran, do dhikr and sincere dua at this time particularly just before Maghrib begins.

Acts of worship which are prescribed on Fridays.
*!
*!
There are many acts of worship which are prescribed for the Muslim to do on this day. These include:
*!
1 – Salaat al-Jumu’ah (Friday prayer)
*!
Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“O you who believe (Muslims)! When the call is proclaimed for the Salaah (prayer) on Friday (Jumu‘ah prayer), come to the remembrance of Allaah [Jumu‘ah religious talk (Khutbah) and Salaah (prayer)] and leave off business (and every other thing). That is better for you if you did but know![al-Jumu’ah 62:9]
*!
2 – Making a lot of du’aa’.
*!
On this day there is a time when a person’s Lord will answer his du’aa’ – by Allaah’s leave.
*!
It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) mentioned Friday and said: “On this day there is a time when no Muslim stands and prays, asking Allaah for something, but Allaah will grant him it” – and he gestured with his hands to indicate how short that time is.
Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 893; Muslim, 852
*!
3 – Reading Soorat al-Kahf.
*!
It was narrated from Abu Sa’eed al-Khduri that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever reads Soorat al-Kahf on Friday, he will be illuminated with light between the two Fridays.” Narrated by al-Haakim; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Targheeb, 836..al-Bayhaqi, 3/249.
*!
*!
4 – Sending a lot of blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him).
*!
It was narrated from Aws ibn Aws that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The best of your days is Friday. On that day Adam (peace be upon him) was created; on that day he died; on that day the Trumpet will be blown; and on that day all of creation will swoon. So send a great deal of blessings upon me, for your blessings will be shown to me.” They said, “O Messenger of Allaah, how will our blessings upon you be shown to you when you have turned to dust?” He said, “Allaah has forbidden the earth to consume the bodies of the Prophets, peace be upon them.”
Narrated by Abu Dawood, 1047

*!
Please during this day of Jumma, remember us and the entire muslim ummah in your duas.

The Virtues of reciting Surah Kahf on Fridays:

"He who recites Suratul Kahf on yaumul Jumuah (Friday), Allah will shine a light for him between the two Fridays." [Baihaqi]

Abu Darda' (Ra) related that the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said, " One who memorized the first ten verses of Suratul Kahf will be secure against the Dajjal (Anti-Christ) . Another version says: "One who commits to his memory the last 10 verses of this surah will remain immune from the Dajjal. [Muslim]

This recite can be recited from after Thursday Maghrib up until Friday Maghrib.

May Allah enable us to recite this blessed Surah very Friday. Ameen

The Prophet (Sallallahu 'Alaihi Wa Sallam) said, "When it is a Friday, the
angels stand at the gate of the masjid and keep on writing the names of the
persons coming to the masjid in succession according to their arrivals. The
example of the one who enters the masjid in the earliest hour is that of
one offering a camel (in sacrifice). The one coming next is like one
offering a cow and then a ram and then a chicken and then an egg

fold their papers and listen to the Khutba."

Reciting Surah Kahf on the night or day of Jummah

From Abu Sa’eed al-Khudri, who said: “Whoever reads Soorat al-Kahf on the night of Jumu’ah, will have a light that will stretch between him and the Ancient House (the Ka’bah).” (Narrated by al-Daarimi, 3407)

“Whoever reads Soorat al-Kahf on the day of Jumu’ah, will have a light that will shine from him from one Friday to the next.” (Narrated by al-Haakim, 2/399; al-Bayhaqi, 3/2249)

So let us make the effort to recite this Surah every Jummah either in the night or day of Jummah to gain these immense rewards.

Forgiveness of sins from one Jummah to another

Allah led those who came before us away from Friday (Jummah)

It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه and Hudhayfah رضي الله عنه said: The Messenger of Allaah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said: “Allaah led those who came before us away from Friday (Jumu'ah). The Jews had Saturday, and the Christians had Sunday. Then Allaah brought us and Allaah guided us to Friday. So there is Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and thus they will follow us on the Day of Resurrection. We are the last of the people of this world but we will be the first on the Day of Resurrection, and we will be dealt with before all others.” [Narrated by Muslim, 856]
