Mental Disorders and Responsibility on Actions...

Assalamaleykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh

I pray this message finds you all in good health and emaan inshAllah
I wanted to get some advice on an issue that has been on my mind for a while. I have a friend who was diagnosed with a mood disorder. For me nothing has changed since I love her for the sake of Allah and even more as I now see that this illness has been a trial for both of us.
She is mashAllah a good muslimah who is very religious and has so much knowledge about the deen. She also tries hard to do dawah every opportunity she has.
However sometimes she has some episodes that make her say things that are contrary to what she is what she believes in. Sometimes these episodes get really bad and she is under medications or admitted in a hospital. She said she has done things she regrets under both the medications and while recovering. She made taubah on these issues and is always trying to improve.

My question is what happens when Muslims have mood disorders or even more complicated psychological problems like schizophrenia or others. Are they responsible for their actions? What about hallucinations and such things?

As far as I know, anyone who has lost their mind is not accountable.

“The pen is lifted from three (i.e., their deeds are not recorded): the sleeper until he awakes, the child until he grows up, and the insane until he regains his sanity or regains consciousness.”

Insha' Allaah ta'aala you're all in my du'a'............

Feeling low
Assalamu`alaykum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatu

That sounds like severe depression to me as per the question any one who is sane will be accountable and insane would not be. Also please tell her to use al-Ruqyah with recitations of the Qur'an such as Soorah al-Faatihah, Soorah al-Ikhlaas, Soorah al-Falaq, Soorah an-Naas and the Aayah al-Kursee. Do the medication cause her to feel drowsy or happy?

Allah does not call to account or punish the insane.

I'm not what you believe

medicines will do to her nothing good;on the contrary, they will make she fall downer.a firm believer is more exposed to the evil.maybe she has fear of something and she can't explain.tell her to make ruqyat as-sharyia,in sh Allah she will feel better,if she feels somethig strange while listening to it,try to contact a good Raqi

It is more severe than just depression, I don't want to get to deep into her diagnosis but the medicines stabilize her ups and downs. However the doctors have a hard time regulating the right dose and that is when the crises happen... I will give her the advice to recite al-Ruqyah inshAllah...

She actually stopped taking the medicines and that is when she had to be admitted into the hospital. As muslims we know only Allah can cure us from anything but medicines are also made by Allah and could be a mean by which he is bringing us some relief. She often makes ruqyah-as-sharyia and reads and listens to the Qu'ran so I believe it does not have to do with possession or shaytaan whispering but an actual medical condition. but Allahu a'alam...
