Does steaming the ear nullify a fast?

I've been having some ear problems from the start of Ramadan, probably caused by getting water in the ear, etc. Today, I was using a cotton swab (big mistake) and suddenly my right ear feels completely blocked and I can't hear very well from that side.

I've heard that one should steam the ear a few times a day, as this helps the ear drain better. Can I do this whilst fasting????

(I really don't want to go to the doctors and have them use their industrial machinery or whatnots to drain the ear)......

Sis- I'm confused. How could steaming your ear possibly invalidate your fast? Unless you have a pathway from your ear leading to your stomach.....

Well- what I can say is probably not, but if you feel uncertain about it just wait until after Iftar. :)

Ramadan Mubarak! :hearts:

Salam :D

However, I'm looking for some daleel rather than opinion..

Ramadan Mubarak to you too.

Dear Sister,

:salam2:

Ramadan Kareem!

With reference to the article I have attached with this post, the rule relating to ear for acts like steaming the ear or using ear drops is :
If the eardrum is breached, it invalidates the fast because the quantity of the
liquid will be a lot.

I hope this will clear your doubt. I pray to Allah that he accepts your fast.

Jazakallahu Khair!

Lol! Dear sister rightpath, don't worry about it. :) Really, it's okay - you cheered me up a lot, so thanks for that.

JazakAllahu Khayr brother Ershad for the link. Alhamdulillah I decided to leave all treatment off until after Iftar.

Plus I got some eardrops to help, so I'll try them out before suhoor/after iftar.

As-salam 'alaikum warahamtu-llah

as this is not a normal/usual passage to stomach, there is no problem, as far as I've read from several fatwah, about using kuhl (surma), because when we use eye drops we can feel something in throat, but still as this is not a normal passage to stomach, no problem, although there are dispute among the scholars. but the most authentic and acceptable, is there is no problem, insha Allah

A tip with lots of warnings and this is for one suffering from ear infection/ pain. Dont do it yourself, ask some one who can see into your ears to do it for you. Incase the pressure from liquid causes too much pain, try using a tissue. The action should just absorb the wet liquid not push it inside. , . But be careful about using tissue, because a poor quality paper tissue could stick to the inside of damp ear walls, when they get soaked, and foreign particle is a big no again for infections [and even the Fasting]. Fold the tissue into a thin stiff roll, be sure its not too long, it should not go deep inside ....

After Fast-break is a good suggestion. For some, cleaning ear gives great relief and bliss to senses. So, I am told its not good to clean ears during fasting, for same reason. But if you suffer from ear pain and cannot let the ears be damp, you better keep the ears dry, for fear of your health. And incase the ear pain is getting chronic medical help is very much needed. No gain in hearing loss or living in pain.

Take Care!

Dont laugh it off, you did ask the right questions that could have lead you to a possible answer!. So next time..... If I were you, I would back off, and not laugh it off :)

Wait untill iftar was a good suggestion.

... Take care!

JazakAllahu Khayr for the replies.

I went to the doctor's today, and she confirmed it as a buildup of earwax - very much in one ear and slightly in the other. I cannot hear a thing from my left ear, and I can't begin to express how utterly depressing and frustrating this is - truly, we take our senses for granted!

I'm to use ear drops 4 times after iftar for a few days and then go back and have my ear washed. As for the second one, when the doctor said there was very slight wax in there, she took this huge long needle and put a tiny bit of cotton on the end, and wanted to stick it in my ear and pull out the wax - I totally panicked! "Noooo, this long needle in my ear! nooooo! Can't it be washed too?" And then the doctor relented and agreed that the needle would close up my ear for a couple days - which would make me completely deaf in both ears!!!

So for now, I'll treat my left ear first, InshaAllah, and when thats better, then I'll have to treat the right ear.

Please make dua for me. :( This is so utterly frustrating and testing for me. It feels like someone has tightly corked my ear shut and I want to get it out.
