What about those of us Western Muslims Sister that were born and raised here, are raising children here. I would rather live in America then some of the so called Muslim countries that are out there.

Assalaam alaikum,

The sister whose demise we are speaking lived in a mixed world. And Sister Precious Star is addressing an issue we do not like to discuss. That sister should have found comfort with Muslims. She was driven to success. She was educated. Yet, she was guilt ridden. It happens to many sisters in the West whose parents want the best of both worlds.

The life on the edge.

Yes, we can sit back and say she did not try hard enough to hold on to her faith. We can critize her for her weakness. Yes, she did wander down the wrong path. But, where was the Muslim world. Where was the soft speech to show her the Light. Where was a place where she could find forgiveness and comfort? She walked a very solitary path.

This is a breakdown of the power of the family. The community is broken. We can only speculate on her state of mind.

What we need to do is make our masjids welcoming. We need to be aware of the circumstances of our communities. We need to have activities at the masjids to include a group of women who are educated. We have a way of sweeping things under the rug to save face.

We do pick up the customs of the kufr. We live in a mixed society. The parents of these sisters do them a disservice. They expect the best from them but do not assist them, as Sister Precious Star has written so well. The sons are forgiven. The sons can marry non-Muslim women. They do have the best of both worlds. They are always accepted.

The field of prospective spouses becomes smaller; the cultural issues of having to be married before you turn 28 or you are an old maid are very strong.

We need to find solutions to the problems that are afflicting our communities in the west. The problems stem from ignorance. We have to find a way to embrace our sisters who are suffering.

Her sense of guilt rests on our shoulders. Our Prophet, swas, loved women. He told us to take care of women.

Sister Shak 78,

What you describe is a new phenomena for the immigrants. Most of us who are western and raising or raised children by ourselves are non-immigrants or second/third generation. The emphasis for marrying young and into the culture of the parents is very strong. The sisters are expected to be well educated and make money but be the traditional girl at home. Crazy.

The issues are cultural.

Sister, maybe below reply will help you...

A person asked Fudhayl ibn `Iyaad rahimahullaah, "Which country would you like me to live in?" Fudhayl replies, "There is no connection between you and any nation. The best country for you is the country which helps you to acquire taqwa."

Assalaam alaykum,

How do you go from hate mail to suicide? All the major religions denounce it because it means you're going to hell. With that in mind, what kind of things were in that hate mail that made her think hell is better than living in the dunya and trying to repent? Alhamdulillah we should all be grateful we have more time to make up for our sins and do good deeds for the sake of Allah (swt). We never know what awaits us tomorrow.

Yes most religions denounce suicide. Its not a solution. The cultivated and non-tempered imagination, pushes a person to extremes ... including suicide.

Having spent time with person who had belief in re-birth; and a scheme to commit suicide so as to release trapped-soul suffering in human body, (a wrong application of persons religious belief!! ), I can tell you... effort in saving life, is rewarding.

May Allah give us the eye to spot fellow humans (regardless of religion) who are in the brink of suicidal thoughts, and prevent them from acting on their thoughts.... Ameen

Ameen.

It would probably be better for Muslims to try to spot non-Muslims (a lot are depressed nowadays, whether they show it outwardly or not). I would hope there aren't many Muslims that are on the brink of suicide insha'Allah, but to bring a non-Muslim "back from the edge" and show them Islam as a way of coping with life in this dunya could be incredibly beneficial. Not to say that depressed/suicidal people are "easy pickings," but from the very bottom, you can only go up insha'Allah, and Islam is the solution to everything.

Assalaam alaikum,

Easy now brother.

It may come across as rough but if we take a moment to analyze this, it is true. The family from what we can infer were not practicing. Some rules were bent. For the benefit of others we need to understand how critical it is for Believers to take care of each other. Before we can reclaim the world how about showing each other a little concern. That is all the sister is pointing out.

Wa alakium Salam,

I still would not want to live in any other country then the one I live in now. I can practice my faith w/out worrying about the secret police coming to get me, I can have a Qu'ran in my house with no fear, I can wear Hijab w/out having to take it off ie Turkey. I also have my rights as a women which were given to me in the Qu'ran that many women in so called Islamic countries do not have today.

Thats good. And its exactly what Fudhayl ibn `Iyaad rahimahullaah meant a 1000 year back, when he said 'The best country for you is the country which helps you to acquire taqwa. '
