It is narrated by Adi bin Hatim [RA] that the Prophet صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ said, "Shield yourselves from the fire of hell (in any way possible), even if it is with half of a date. And the one who cannot even afford (half of a date) should shield himself/herself from the fire of hell with a goodly word".

[Agreed Upon by Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim]

Vocabulary from the Hadith

- اتَّقى (ittaqa) means to beware of, wary of, cautious of. But when it is used with the preposition ب, it means to protect/shelter/shield oneself from something, which is the case in the hadith.
- The word شِقّ (shiqq) means half. A similar looking word شَقّ (shaqq) means breaking, tearing.
- تَمْرَة (tamrah) is a single date, whereas تَمْر (tamr) are dates

Lessons

- Charity (sadaqah) is one of the deeds - like fasting - that protects from the fire of hell. In the hadith above, the Prophet صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ is ordering us to shield ourselves from the fire with charity, even with something as insignificant as half of a date. In the Qur'an, Allah commands us, "Oh you who believe, save yourselves and your families from a fire whose fuel is people and stones" [66:6].

- It is not the quantity of the charity, rather it is the sincerity of intention that earns magnified rewards from Allah and protection from the fire of hell.

- A goodly word is equivalent to charity since it helps a needy person in non-monetary ways. Thus, a good word is a source of protection from the fire of hell as well.

- The word used to describe "goodly word" in the hadith is indefinite (نكرة), i.e. كَلِمَةٍ طَيِّبَةٍ (kalimatin tayyibatin). This indicates that even the smallest possible kind of a goodly word is a form of charity, when said with correct intentions.
