Do taraweeh(11 including 3 rakaah witr.20 rakaah is a "weak" naration(8 rakaah taraweeh+3 rakaah witr=11)
The number of rakaah that were performed in the congregation lead by Tamim Ad-dari and Ubayy bin Ka'b RA as per the decree of Caliph 'Umar RA is also 11 raakah ,according to an authentic chain of transmitters.(Muwaata, by Imam Malik, chapter:Night Prayer of ramadan, vol 1 p.115)

Offering the Night Prayer or taraweeh prayer in Ramadan in 20 rakaah is a clear contradiction to the practise (Sunnah) of the prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam. All reports supporting this number 20 are graded "weak".The scholars of the hanafi School of Thought have admitted this view.(Muwatta by Imam Muhamamd, chapter:Night Prayer in Ramadan p.138)

Of the references, some of the books quoted mention that 20 rakaah for night prayer is supported from the practice of the Companions. Never the less, all of them unanimously agreed to the view that the confirmed number of rakaah is 11 including the 3 witr prayer, not 20 or more.Another consensus among them is that all the hadith and narrations produced to prove the view of 20 rakaah are weak, an none are acceptable according to Science of Hadith.

Taraweeh is different then tahajud /qiyam layl.

Tarweeh mostly we recite almost the whole quran in one month if possible.

after doing taraweeh..u may do tahajud(if u wake up from sleep) or qiyam layl..according to the sunnah..it is up till 8 rakaah either taraweeh/tahajud/qiyam layl..

finally do the witr when you have completed your sunnah prayers.

Allah knows the best.

one an do any number 8, 11, 20, 36 or 100 but 8 +3 witr is sunnah. However, if one is doing taraweeh in congregation then he has to follow the imam.

walikumsalam, it doesnt matter if you read 8 or 20, our prophet did read 8, but then after the sahabas did read 20.so either will be accepted, but 20 will give you alot of reward.and also makkah and medinah they read 20, so inshallah its no bidah or anything.

Tarawih, qiyamul lay and tahajjud are all same. Tarawih is named because people would take a pause between each two rekah. During time of resulullah :saw: it was more known as qiyamul layl or tahajjud.

And the prophet :saw: would not pray more than 11 or 13 rekah including vitr in or outside of Ramadan. So it is important to follow the sunnah of the prophet :saw:.

salaam to REVERT2007,

You wrote....

>>>>Taraweeh is different then tahajud /qiyam layl.<<<

But the word THARAWEEH never appeared in the SHAHEEH HADHEES BOOKS.
This name is invented but dont know by whom....

Instead qiyaamul lail and tahajjadh are to be seen which was the correct prayer of Rasoolullaah......

If anyone needs to pray more nafil prayers then first finish the 08 + 03 and then start to pray nafil prayers ....

Salamu alaykum

jazakallah khairan for your replys brothers.

But akhi the fatwa says since it's a sunnah it's alright if we pray more then just 11 and 13!!

to clarify it to sister revert this is what i was talking about i forgot to add the link in my reply to you.

This voluntary prayer is described as Qiyam al-Layl because it involves long standings, in which long portions of the Qur'aan are recited. Other common names for this prayer are 'Salaat al-Layl' (the night prayer), Tahajjud (from hajjada meaning awake at night), witr and Taraweeh (resting). [Lisaan ul-Arab under 'Hajada' and 'Rawaha'] Its should be noted that Tahajjud is not different from Qiyam and Taraweeh, these are different names of the same prayer. Commonly the word Taraweeh is used to describe this prayer in Ramadaan, the Muslims used this term from early times. Muhammad Shaqrah says: “The reason for this name is that due to long recitation the people used to rest after every four rak'ah. Eventually this practice became a necessary element of Taraweeh even with short recitations. This led people to think that ‘Taraweeh’ is the correct name revealed to Allah's Messenger (sallallahu alaihi wa-sallam).” [Irsad us-Sari p.75-77] This name is wrong in text and in meaning. This name is neither known from Allah’s Messenger (sallallahu alaihi wa-sallam) nor his companions t… and as for the meaning the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa-sallam) never taught the practice of resting between particular rak’ahs. Thus, Taraweeh is a novel name and it is better to use the name which the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alaihi wa-sallam) used for this prayer; ‘Qiyaam’.

Assalamu alaykum

please read this below.

I wanted to know the difference between QIYYAM and TARAWIH.

Praise be to Allaah.

Salaat al-Taraaweeh is classified as part of qiyaam al-layl; they are not two different prayers, as many people think. Qiyaam al-layl during Ramadaan is called Taraaweeh because the salaf or early generations of Islam (may Allaah have mercy on them) used to rest (istaraahu) after every two or four rak’ahs, because they made their prayers long in order to make the most of this season of great reward. They were eager to earn the reward mentioned in the hadeeth: “Whoever stays up and prays at night in Ramadaan out of faith and in the hope of reward, all his previous sins will be forgiven.” (Reported by al-Bukhaari, no. 36). And Allaah knows best.
Islam Q&A
Sheikh Muhammed Salih Al-Munajjid

also

Taraaweeh prayer is not bid’ah and there is no specific number of rak’ahs
On the occasion of the blessed month of Ramadaan, the people turn to Taraaweeh prayer. My question is: there are some who pray eleven rak’ahs immediately after ‘Isha’ prayer, following the example of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him); and there are those who pray twenty-one rak’ahs, ten after ‘Isha’ and ten before Fajr, then they pray Witr. What is the shar’i ruling on this way of praying Taraaweeh? Please note that there are those who say that praying qiyaam before Fajr is bid’ah. May Allaah reward you with good.

Praise be to Allaah.

Taraaweeh prayer is Sunnah according to the consensus of the Muslims, as al-Nawawi (may Allaah have mercy on him) said in al-Majmoo’.

Taraaweeh prayer was encouraged by the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), for example when he said: “Whoever spends the nights of Ramadaan in prayer out of faith and in the hope of reward, his previous sins will be forgiven.” Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 37; Muslim, 760

So how can it be a bid’ah when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) encouraged us to do it and the Muslims are unanimously agreed that it is mustahabb!

Perhaps the one who said that it is bid’ah meant that gathering to offer Taraaweeh prayer in the mosques is bid’ah.

This too is incorrect, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) prayed Taraaweeh in congregation with his companions for many nights, then he stopped doing that lest it be made obligatory upon the Muslims. Then when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) died and the revelation came to an end, this concern was no longer an issue, because it could not be made obligatory after the death of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). So ‘Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him) gathered the Muslims to pray Taraaweeh in congregation. See Question no. 21740.

The time for Taraaweeh prayer is from after ‘Isha’ prayer until dawn comes. See Question no. 37768.

There is no specific number of rak’ahs for Taraaweeh prayer, rather it is permissible to do a little or a lot. The two ways mentioned in the question are both permissible.

That should be based on whatever the people in each mosque think is suitable for them.

The best is that which was proven from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), which is that he never did more then eleven rak’ahs when praying qiyaam al-layl, in Ramadaan or at other times.

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen said, after mentioning the number of rak'ahs in Taraaweeh prayer:

The matter is broad in scope. No one should be denounced for praying eleven or twenty-three, because the matter is broader in scope than that, praise be to Allaah.

Fataawa al-Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen, 1/407

And Allaah knows best.
