Record 5 million Umrah pilgrims this year.

Total number of Umrah visas issued until July 16 is 1.1 million more than the total visas issued last year.

Riyadh: With the holy month of Ramadan only few days away,
Makkah is witnessing a huge flow of Umrah pilgrims from all over the world.
Five million pilgrims are expected to perform the lesser pilgrimage this year.

According to the latest figures released by the Agency for Umrah Affairs at the Ministry of Haj, the number of Umrah visas issued until July 16 (Shaaban 15) reached more than 4.6 million. This figure is 1.1 million more than the total visas issued last year. The flow of pilgrims would gain further momentum during Ramadan, marking the peak Umrah season of the year.

It is noteworthy that there has been a gradual increase in the number of Umrah pilgrims over the past few years. But the increase witnessed in the current year is unprecedented compared to previous years.

There was a rise of 20,0000 and 30,0000 pilgrims in 2010 and 2009 respectively compared with the previous years. The Agency also noted that there was a huge fall in the number of overstaying Umrah pilgrims. Last year, only about 3,000 pilgrims overstayed out of more than three million pilgrims who came to perform the lesser pilgrimage.

Health centres

Meanwhile, the branch of the Ministry of Health in Makkah said that eight additional health centres are operating in Makkah to extend the best possible medical services for the growing number of Umrah pilgrims and visitors to the Haram Mosque.

All the hospitals and health clinics have geared up in the wake of the influx of pilgrims during Ramadan.

Dr O. Al Bar, mayor of Makkah, told News that the municipality is currently implementing a number of development projects costing a total of Saudi Riyal 6 billion. These included construction, expansion and renovation of roads and flood drainage system, in addition to several municipal projects.

The mayor urged the citizens whose properties have been expropriated for the ongoing expansion and the development projects in the Central Haram Area to approach the authorities concerned to receive their compensation.

"There should not be any delay in disbursement of their compensation. If any citizens have grievances in this respect, they can approach the Court of Grievances," Dr Al Bar added.
