5 things to do on Laylatul Qadr

So valuable is this Night of Qadr that the Quran devotes a special surah to it “Lailatul Qadr is better than a thousand months” [97:3]

This one night surpasses the value of 30,000 nights. The most authentic account of the occurrence of the Night indicates that it can occur on any one of the last ten, odd numbered nights of Ramadan, 21, 23, 25, 27, 29.

We should strive to stay up at least on the odd numbered nights of the last ten days. If we can't manage that then let us pray at least on the 27th night. If one prays on all of the last odd numbered nights then there is more chance that one may have caught this most powerful night and the reward is of over 83 YEARS OF WORSHIP! Subhanallah! Most will not even live up to that age!

It is a night that we CANNOT miss out on so here is how we can maximise this blessed night:

1. Recite the Qur’an abundantly

Az-Zuhri used to say upon the coming of Ramadan,
“It is only about reciting the Qur’an and feeding the poor.”

Abdur-Raziq said, “When Ramadan came, Sufyan Ath-Thawri (Ra) would give up all acts of (voluntary) worship and devote himself to the recitation of the Qur’an.”

Laylatul Qadr is the night the Qur'an was revealed so we should spend much of the night reciting it for we will gain 700 hasanah (good deeds) or more by reciting each letter!

2. Strive to gain forgiveness

One should strive and do their utmost to gain the mercy of Allah especially in the odd numbered nights of the last ten days. If one leaves Ramadan without gaining the mercy of Allah then surely they are the most unfortunate ones and are the biggest losers in this world and the next.

The main Dua for Laylatul Qadr is the following:

Aisha (Ra) said:
“I asked the Messenger of Allah: 'O Messenger of Allah, if I know what night is the night of Qadr, what should I say during it?' He said: 'Say: O Allah, You are pardoning and You love to pardon, so pardon me.'

"Allahumma innaka 'afuwwun tuhibbul 'afwa fa'fu 'annee" (Ahmad, Ibn Majah, and Tirmidhi).

Gaining forgiveness on Laylatul Qadr:

Abu Huraira narrated that the Messenger said:
“Whoever stands (in prayer) in Laylatul Qadr while nourishing his faith with self-evaluation, expecting reward from Allah, will have all of his previous sins forgiven.” (Bukhari and Muslim).

We should sincerely repent for past and present sins with the intention of not repeating them again and ask of Allah to help us prevent ourselves from doing them again and ask Allah to perfect our characters and to help us improve ourselves in everyway possible.

3. Do much Supererogatory Prayers (Nafil)

Rabi'ah ibn Malik al-Aslami (Ra) reported that the Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said:
"Ask (anything)." Rabi'ah (Ra) said: "I ask of you to be your companion in paradise." The Prophet said: "Or anything else?" Rabi'ah (Ra) said: "That is it." The Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said to him: "Then help me by making many prostrations (i.e., supererogatory prayers)." (Muslim)

The Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said:
“Whoever draws near to Allah during it (Ramadan) with a single characteristic from the characteristics of (voluntary) goodness, he is like whoever performs an obligatory act in other times. And whoever performs an obligatory act during it, he is like whoever performed seventy obligatory acts in other times.” – Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah, no. 1887.

In this most blessed month of Ramadhan all good deeds are multiplied by 70 or more. Every Nafil one prays one will gain the reward of a Fard Salaah and every Fard Salah is the reward of 70 Fard Salaah. Subhanallah what other time of the year is this possible? NONE! So let us make the best of these precious seconds and pray as many Nafil prayers as is possible!

Here are some Nafil prayers we can pray during the last 10 nights:

1. Two Rakat after performing Wudu (Ablution)

Abu Hurayrah (Ra) reported that the Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said to Bilal (Ra):
“Tell me about the best of your deeds (i.e. one which you deem the most rewarding) since your embracing Islam because I heard your footsteps in front of me in Paradise.” Bilal (Ra) replied: “I do not consider any act of mine more rewarding than that whenever I make ablution at any time of night or day, I perform Prayer for as much as was destined for me to do.” (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)”

2. Tahajjud

Imam Abu Sa'id al-Khadimi (Ra) said,

"There is scholarly consensus (ijma`) that among the best of virtuous acts is the night vigil prayer." [al-Bariqa al-Mahmudiyya Sharh al-Tariqa al-Muhammadiyya]

The scholars derived the following in regards to Tahajjud from the Qur'an and prophetic hadiths:

1. The minimal night vigil prayer is 2 rakats. [Hindiyya, quoting Fath al-Qadir]

2. Its optimal recommended amount is 8 rakats, because this was the general practice of the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace be upon him, his family, and companions). [Hindiyya, quoting Fath al-Qadir]

3. Lengthier recitation is superior to a larger number of rakats prayed. [Durr al-Mukhtar, Radd al-Muhtar]

4. It is recommended to start the night vigil with two short rakats, because of the hadith of Abu Hurayra (Ra) that the Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said, "It you get up for night prayer, start with two short rakats." [Muslim, Ahmad, Abu Dawud]

Ibn Mas`ud (Ra) was asked,
"I cannot pray at night." He said, "Your sins have prevented you."

4. Increase in Dhikr (Remembrance of Allah)

We should glorify Allah night and day, especially in the last odd nights.

Here are some easy and very beneficial Dhikr and glorification we can do throughout the last ten odd nights:

1. Allahumma innaka 'afuwwun tuhibbul 'afwa fa'fu 'annee

2. Subhanallah

3. Alhamdulillah

4. Allahu Akbar

5. Laa ilaha ilallah

6. LA HAWLA WA LA QUWWATA ILLA BILLAH

7. Asthaghfirullah

8. SUB-HAN'ALLAH HIL AZEEM WA BI-HAM'DIHI,

9. Subhāna-llāhi, wa-l-hamdu li-llāhi, wa lā ilāha illā-llāhu, wa-llāhu akbar. Wa lā hawla wa lā quwwata illā bi-llāhi-l-aliyyi-l-azīm

10. Lā ilāha illā-llāhu waḥdahu lā sharīka lahu lahu-l-mulku wa lahu-l-ḥamdu yuhyi wa yumītu wa huwa ḥayyu-llā yamūtu abadan abada, ḏū-l-jalāli wa-l-ikrām, biyadihi-l-khayr, wa huwa alā kulli Shay-in qadīr

Or the shortened version:

11. Laa ilaaha illal-laahu wahdahu laa shareeka lahu, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu wa huwa ‘alaa kulli shay-in qadeer

One can also recite the durood that one recites in one's Salaah or a Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallim

5. Make much Dua

We should be very busy in Dua as much as we can especially in the last 10 odd numbered.

Allah Almighty says in the Qur'an:

"When my servants ask you concerning me, (tell them) I am indeed close (to them). I listen to the prayer of every suppliant when he calls on me." [2:186]

The place of duaa is so high to Allah, that the Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallim) had said: "Nothing is more honourable to Allah the Most High than Du`a." [Sahih al-Jami` no.5268].

He also said:
"The most excellent worship is du`a." [Sahih Al-Jami` no. 1133]

It is a good idea to write down the things most important to us that we want to ask of Allah in our Dua's. That way we will not miss out asking of Allah anything important. Therefore let us devote much of the night of Qadr in Dua asking of Allah for his mercy and forgiveness for all of our past sins and making firm intentions to Allah that we will change for the better and strive to become closer to him as well as make our Deen a FULL part of our lives and not just a little part of our life as Allah says:

Allah tells us In the Qur'an to enter fully into our Deen and not partly:

O believers enter into Islam completely and do not follow the footsteps of shaitan, surely he is your clear-cut enemy.... (Surah Al-Baqara, Ayah 208-210)

So then will we not make Islam a FULL part of our lives? This is our best opportunity and if we don't take it and death comes to us then surely we will regret it for ETERNITY!

May Allah enable us to make the best of these blessed nights and to keep us away from sins and distractions and may he enable us to find Laylatul Qadr and give our best performance in it. Ameen

Asalaamu alaikum. Yes my sister you should certainly spread the article far and wide,so we can all benefit from this auspicious night. Regarding the signs of the Night of Power:

Virtues of Ramadhaan - Laylatul Qadr

Ubaadah bin Saamit (Radhiallaho anho) reports that he asked the Prophet (Sallallaho alaihe wasallam) about "Laylatul Qadr". He replied: "It is in Ramadhan, during the last ten days, on the unevenly numbered nights, either the 21st 23rd, 25th, 27th, 29th or the last night of Ramadhan. Whosoever stands in "Ibaadah" on this night, with sincere faith and with genuine hopes of gaining reward, his previous sins will be forgiven. Among the signs of this night is that it is a serene, quiet, shining night, neither hot, nor cold but temperate as if a moon is shining clear, and no meteors are shot at the "Shayateen" on that night; it lasts until the break of the dawn. Another sign is that at morn, the Sun rises without any radiant beams of light, appearing rather like the moon in it's fullness. On that day, Allah prohibits the "Shayateen" from rising up with the Sun."

COMMENTARY

Part of what has been mentioned in this Hadith has already been dealt with. Some signs are here mentioned about the actual night. These signs are clear and need no further elucidation. Apart from these, there are other signs too, as mentioned in the Ahadith or in the experiences of those who had the good fortune to experience "Laylatul Qadr." The sign that is, however; most specific in the Hadith is the rising of the sun, 'without any radiant beams of light.' Other signs are not always there. One Sahaabi, Ab'da bin Abi Lubaaba (Radhi Allaho anho) says: "On the evening of the 27th , I tasted the water of the sea and it was sweet." Ayub bin Khalid said: 'I once had to bathe myself with sea water, and on tasting it, found, it sweet. This was on the 23rd night."

Some misconceptions on the Night of Power

Does Laylatul Qadr start after Midnight?

It is a big misunderstanding that Laylatul Qadr is in the middle of the night. Laylatul Qadr starts from Maghrib up until the beginning of fajr.

Tahajjud prayer at night

Regarding the Tahajjud prayer then it is a minumum of 2 rakat upto 12 rakat. It is recommended to do at least 8 rakah.

In in Tahajjud prayer we should try to recite as much Qur'an as we have memorized possible for there is more reward reciting Qur'an in Tahajjud than on its own. What i find is a good way of praying Tahajjud is to darken the room which will help one pray with full humility.

One should imagine Allah infront of them and watching them pray. One should try to overcome oneself with emotion and even cry. One can recite any surah constantly. Some pious predecessors used to recite Surah Ikhlas again and again or a certain verse that they found powerful.

So when is Laylatul Qadr?

Regarding when Laylatul Qadr is then most scholars agree it moves around within the last ten nights of Ramadan particularly the last odd numbered nights. Therefore if we want to catch it for sure then we should pray EVERYNIGHT in the last ten nights. If not then at least the last ten odd nights. If we can't do all the odd nights then as many as we can. If we still can't manage that then at least on the 27th night.

The reason why it is hidden in the last ten nights is because Allah wants us to search for it by worshipping him sincerely in ALL 10 nights. The more effort we make to try to search for this night by worshipping as much as we can in the last ten nights then the more reward we will gain.

So lets search for it and not just pray just on one night!

Those of us who search for it properly in the last ten nights and pray therein with full sincerety hoping for reward can expect an entire lifetime of sins wiped out and over 83 years of worship reward. Subhaanallah! How generous is Allah?

So let us not become complacent! Let us worship in EVERY night from now until the end of Ramadan or at least as many nights as we can. We should try not to sleep in the night in these last ten nights but if we have to then we should sleep and wake up at least 2 hours before Suhur ends. The best time for dua and prayer is the time just before Suhur ends.

May Allah enable us to make the best of these blessed remaining nights. Ameen

salam alikom,

Jazak allah khairan for sharing. I have a question; lets say that I plan on staying up all night long on the 23rd of Ramadan, will that night begin in the evening of the 22nd of Ramadan (and morning of the 23rd) or the evening of the 23rd (and morning of the 24th)?

Asalaamu Alaikum, The Islamic day starts with the night and then the day. So it starts from Maghrib until Maghrib next day.

So the 23rd night will start on the 22nd day and will begin at Maghrib. Laylatul Qadr is from Maghrib until Fajr so it will be on the 22nd day from Maghrib until the 23rd morning at Fajr.

:wasalam:

Asalaamu Alaikum, To answer your question, Sheikh Mufti Muhammad Taqi Uthmani states:

Supplication during sajdah is permissible, but the following points should alway be kept in mind:

(a) While offering sajdah in a regular prayer (salah) the medium of supplication should always be Arabic language. It is not permissible to use any other language during salah.

(b) One should restrict himself, as far as possible, to the supplications contained in the Holy Qur'an and Sunnah. How ever, if one likes to pray in his own Arabic words, the prayers should be restricted to those things only which cannot be asked from a human being, such as

اللهم اغفرلي ولزوجتي ولأولادي

"O Allah, forgive my sins and the sins of my wife and my children."

This Arabic supplication is permissible because forgiveness of sins can be asked from a human being cannot be asked in a prayer offered while performing salah, such as (O Allah, make me marry such and such women). If somebody prays for such mundane things which can be asked from a human being also, the salah will be rendered void, even if the medium of prayer is Arabic language.

(c) Although offering supplications during sajdah is permissible with the conditions mentioned above, it is more advisable to avoid it during the Fard salah, and restrict it to the Nawafil only.

All the rules mentioned above relate to the supplications offered in a sajdah which forms part of salah. However, if someone makes a sajdah out of salah for the purpose of supplication only, there is no prohibition, nor is it necessary to observe the conditions mentioned in (a),(b) or (c) above. In such a position one can pray in whatever language one deems fit.

It is, therefore, permissible to make sajdah for the purpose of supplication after the salah is over. However, this should not be made a permanent practice after every salah, because the Holy Prophet, salla-Allahu alayhi wa sallam, used to make dua after salah in a sitting position, and it is in no way advisable to leave this sunnah of the Holy Prophet, salla-Allahu alayhi wa sallam, forever.

Asalaamu laikum, yes it is permissable:

Raising the hands in dua: This is proven from the Sunnah and there is nothing forbidden or contradictory in the Shariah to it.

Abu Musa Ashari (RA) narrated that the Prophet (Sallaho Alaihe Wassallam) made a dua, and I saw him raise his hands, until I could see the whitness of his armpits. (Bukhari)

Wa alaykumassalaam,
:jazaak: for that info brother.May Allah reward you immensely.Ameen.

The following are:

The Sunnah’s of Dua (Supplication)

1. To abstain from haraam (forbidden) food, clothing and earnings. (Muslim, Tirmidhi)

2. To make Dua with sincerity. In other words, one should firmly believe that nobody but Allah Ta’ala will fulfil his objectives. (Hakim)

3. One should perform a good deed prior to making the Dua & he should mention this during the course of the Dua. For e.g he should say; “O Allah! I had performed so & so deed solely for Your pleasure. O Allah! Accept my Dua due to the barkah (blessings) of that deed.” (Muslim, Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud).

4. To make Dua whilst one is Paak & clean. (Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud, Ibn Majah, Nasai, Ibn Hibbaan, Mustadrak).

5. To make Wudhu before the Dua (All six major hadith collections)

6. To face the Qiblah (All six major hadith collections)

7. To sit as in the Tashahhud position (Abu Awanah)

8. To praise Allah Ta’ala at the beginning as well as at the end of Dua (All six major hadith collections)

9. To convey Durood upon Rasulallah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) at the beginning as well as the end. (Abu Dawud, Musnad-Ahmad)

10. To spread out both the hands. (Tirmidhi, Mustadrak)

11. To raise both the hands up to the shoulders (Abu Dawud, Musnad-Ahmad)

Note: The hands should be raised to the shoulders in front forming a bowl shape with a slight gap between the palms/hands

12. To sit with humility and respect. (Muslim, Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud)

13. To mention ones helplessness and dependence. (Tirmidhi)

14. To abstain from raising the eyes towards the sky whilst making Dua (Muslim)

15. To mention the Asmaal-Husnaa (the names of Allah Ta’ala) and the sublime qualities Of Allah Ta’ala. (Ibn Hibbaan and Mustadrak)

16. To abstain from ceremonies rhyming of the Dua phrases (Bukhari)

17. To abstain from saying the Dua in a "sing-song" tone if the Dua is in a poetic form (Hisnul Hasin)

18. To make the Dua in a soft voice (All six major hadith collections on the authority if Abu Musa)

19. To utter the Dua phrases transcribed from the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) because he didn’t leave out a single need of the Deen nor of the dunya whilst teaching us how to make Dua (Abu Dawud, Nasai)

20. To make a Dua that encompasses most of the needs of Deen and the dunya. (Abu Dawud)

21. To make Dua in favour of oneself first, thereafter ones parents and to include the other Muslims in the Dua as well (Muslim)

22. If the Imam is making Dua, he should not make Dua for himself only but he should include all the congregants in the Dua (Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi, and Ibn Majah)

23. Abu Dawud narrates that Rasulallah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: “the Imam, who makes Dua for himself only, has betrayed the people."

In other words, the Imam should not make a Dua that is restricted to him alone. For e.g He should not say, "O Allah! Cure my son." or "O Allah! Return my lost item." etc. but he should make a Dua that includes the entire congregation for e.g. He may say "O Allah! Forgive us and have mercy upon us."

24. To make Dua with firm conviction (for e.g. he should not say: "O Allah! If you wish fulfil so and so task of mine." (All six major hadith collections)

25. To make Dua with enthusiasm & yearning. (Ibn Hibban & Abu Awanah).

26. As far as possible endeavour to bring about a "presence of heart and mind" and cherish a high hope of the Dua being accepted. (Hakim)

27. To make Dua repeatedly. (Bukhari, Muslim)

28. This repetition should be at least thrice (Abu Dawud)

Note: One may repeat the Dua thrice in none sitting or he may repeat it on three different occasions. The "repetition of the Dua" can be interpreted in both ways.

29. To make Dua earnestly and insistently. (Nasai, Hakim, Abu Awanah)

30. To abstain from making Dua of severing family ties or other sins. (Muslim, Tirmidhi)

31. Avoid making Dua’s of pre-determined and fixed things (for e.g. woman should not make a dua of being transformed into a man or a tall person shouldn't make Dua saying "O Allah! Make me short." etc) (Nasai).

Note: The dua should be made only for permissible things.

32. Don't Make Dua for impossible things. (Bukhari)

33. Don't make a Dua in which you ask Allah Ta’ala to confine His mercy to yourself Only (Bukhari, Abu Dawud, Nasai, and Ibn Majah)

34. Ask only Allah Ta’ala alone for all your needs. Do not depend upon His creations. (Tirmidhi/Ibn Hibbaan)

35. The one making the Dua as well as the person listening to it, both should say Ameen at the end. (Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Dawud, Nasai)

36. Rub both hands over the face at the termination of the Dua (Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi, Ibn Hibbaan, Majah, and Hakim)

37. Don't be impatient over the acceptance of Dua’s. In other words, don't say: "I've made Dua repeatedly but to no avail." (Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Dawud, Nasai, Ibn Majah)

38. Try to cry whilst making dua to Allah as he attends to his servants quicker when they are crying with meekness and humility just as a mother tends to her baby quickly when it cries out for its mother. If one cannot cry then one must at least try and simulate the act of crying.

Note: The dua should be concluded with Durood and Ameen.

49. When dua’s are answered Rasulallah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) has taught us to be thankful and appreciative by saying:-

Alhamdulillaahilladhee be ‘izzathihee wa jalaa lihee tha thimmuswaaleehaath

“Praise be to Allah that good works have been accomplished by his Power and Glory.” (Hakim)

Alhamdulillah!:jazaak: for this.

Make quality Dua's not quantity:

It is not necessarily quantity or length of Dua that is important but it is the quality of one's Dua which really matters most. Quality in that one makes Dua to Allah like a slave and begger in humility and meekness asking of ones Lord and master most high and honoured whereas we are most low and insignificant.

We should concentrate and be mindful of Allah whilst doing Dua and does not let his mind wander. We should also try to imagine him in front of us and listening to make Dua for him. Also that we are most sincere whilst in Dua and it is far better if we cry out of meekness and humility and are most remorseful of our sins past and present and that we resolve never to repeat them again. We should cry for the salvation of ourselves and our parents and families and those of our families. We should cry like sincere beggers and slaves to the master of the Universe. We should cry for the state our Ummah is in and for our brothers and sisters being oppressed. But if we cannot cry then we should at least make our face like we are crying.

I also recommend that we make a Dua list right now so we can refer to it whilst in Dua so we do not forget what we must make Dua for. We should try to mix our worship so we do not feel tired or bored. Therefore we should devote much of the night to the Qur'an and make much Dhikr and Dua in between. We should also pray Tahajjud and make Dua after it and Dua is also readily accepted just before Fajr begins.

So let us make the best of the last few days and nights of this blessed month as we will NEVER get this Ramadan back again once it is gone!
