A clarification on Music....

Asalaamu alaikum my brothers & sisters -

I know that music is haram. But I also know that nasheed in certain circumstances is halal.

Now, I've stopped listening to music (that was the roughest thing I've had to do) but I can't figure out just what is haram and what is halal.

On one hand I'm told that music is allowed with percussion only, and that its haram if it includes wind or string instruments (and impure lyrics).

On the other hand, I was told that ANY instruments (including percussion) is haram. I'm told that percussion is only halal for weddings.

A friend in KSA tells me that anything "modern" is haram, but tambourine and drums are halal.

So yeah I'm totally confused here!

JazakAllah Khairn

Wa alaykum salam warahmatullaahi wa barakatuh

As I read your question I smiled to myself. If you found the evidence of a certain instrument being halal, some haram, some unclear (lol), so what are you going to do next - will you be in search of music in halal instruments only? It's not complicated my dear, here read the following thread may Allaah give you clear understanding in sha Allaah.

Just for the record, singing is also haram except to the following:
1. a female child;
2. a slave;
3. a wife to a husband.

Wa-sallaam
