At least 73 people have been killed in fan clashes following a football match in the Egyptian city of Port Said, state television reports.

The deaths occurred after supporters invaded the pitch following a match between top-tier clubs Masry and al-Ahly on Wednesday.

It is feared the death toll could rise as scores have been injured.

Some of the dead were security officers, the Associated Press quoted a morgue official as saying.

The BBC's Jon Leyne in Cairo says it appears fans had taken knives into the stadium.

Our correspondent says the lack of the usual level of security in the stadium might have contributed to the clashes.

Police in Egypt have been keeping a much lower profile since last year's popular protests that ousted President Hosni Mubarak from power.

Bitter rivalry

Television pictures have shown images of crowds descending into the stadium, chasing rival fans and players.

Some were cornered in the stadium, parts of which were set on fire.

Egyptian fans are notoriously violent, says our correspondent, particularly supporters of al-Ahly known as the Ultras.

They have been heavily implicated in the political confrontations recently, our correspondent adds.

Wednesday's violence broke out at the end of the match, which, unusually, the Port Said side Masry won 3-1.

As match ended, their fans flooded onto the pitch attacking Ahly players and fans.

It is one of the worst football-related incidents in Egypt.

All premier league matches have been cancelled and the newly-elected Egyptian parliament is to hold an emergency session on Thursday, state TV has announced.

Praise to Allah,

Hooligans look like well-behaved schoolboys compared to these people, and when you listen to some idiots trying to make the remnants of the former Egyptian regime responsible for that accident you just want to scream! People who say that to get rid of the Egyptian problem they just have to take power off the military and give it to the people and that the stadium accident is caused by that. The Democratic, totalitarian, Marxist way: Power to the People. This is the solution, they still continue to say.

The problem of our people isn't primarily their regimes or their military, their biggest problem is their own selves. Nobody was responsible for the stadium accident but the supporters who were engaged in it.

Trying to put the police responsible for it will put you in big trouble: The Holy crowd has just overruled the evil government through the Holy Revolution. They don't need to be oppressed by a subversive police to watch a football match. The Egyptian people are peaceful, they organize their own selves in times of trouble, little schoolboys carry small clubs and organize car traffic. Soft cotton revolutions is all what they do.

Well, that proved itself to be all wrong from beginning to end, some people begin to realize they have been duped, the others continue to jump and scream insulting the ghosts of the Husni regime and the military or some other shadow.

The problem of the people is themselves, the military, the regime are part of the crowd.

Civilization is a constructive activity, not the the contrary. If they want a civilization, they must try to engage in such an activity and keep their demolition tool locked in a volt.

Walaikkum Assalam,

The amazing thing is, as a brother said, the people who were killed in that football game, are now being called as "Shuhadda"! Yes they are Shuhada but not fi sabil'Allah but fi sabili football! I can't believe muslims are fighting and killing each other over a stupid game.
