"a small part of me was hoping that this would be an intellectual program, something to evolve Malay-Muslim thinking.

That hope was of course killed off immediately when I learnt that (Akedemi Al-Quran) AAQ was a competition which rewarded the most accurate and melodic reciters of the Quran. I scoured the internet hoping to find other possible elements to this program but my search was in vain. AAQ was indeed a competition that rewarded reciters, not readers. The young men who were on the web page of Berita Harian Online detailing the story probably worked hard and deserved their victories. I congratulate them but I do have one thing to say:

THE QURAN IS NOT A SONG BOOK!

In Arab culture, the qaari or reciter enjoys a respectable position. Indeed, many Arab cultural historians believe that it is the qaaris who first transitioned into singers and contributed to Arabic music. We should respect the culture that emerged from this profession but we should also note that this is not the purpose of the Quran.

The creators of Akademi Al-Quran claim that they wish to bring society closer to the Quran. How will this reality tv program achieve that if all the people are doing are watching reciters without understanding them? This is why the Quran remains mostly unknown to the Malays, because we treat it like a book of hymns and not like a direct disclosure of God."

I somehow agree with him.

Salam brother,
Thanks for your opinion,Wallahu alam.May Allah swt bless you.The link is just for you to watch & share.

U said-THE QURAN IS NOT A SONG BOOK!

Answer- Of course it is not a song book.Al Quran is a guidance for all mankind.

U said-In Arab culture, the qaari or reciter enjoys a respectable position. Indeed, many Arab cultural historians believe that it is the qaaris who first transitioned into singers and contributed to Arabic music. We should respect the culture that emerged from this profession but we should also note that this is not the purpose of the Quran.

Answer - In Malay cultures historians we also have dhikir among the villagers, nasyheed, zapin (Jawi:زافين)introduced by Muslim missionaries from the Middle East in the 14th century.

U said-The creators of Akademi Al-Quran claim that they wish to bring society closer to the Quran. How will this reality tv program achieve that if all the people are doing are watching reciters without understanding them?

Answer -Because Arab is not our language.Malay is our language.Malay is normally written using Latin alphabet called Rumi,a Malay also often written in Jawi, a script based on Arabic.( جوي Jăwi). It is a basic of our studies at 1st grade in schools. ,if not for what we recite the surah without no meaning?!

Answer- No.thats not true,we already learned the muqaddam & al quran since were young,do not judge malays by the way we looks. Is that we only 50years independence? but we already more moderate in physicals?,but Islam,Al quran & sunnah is still malays muslim guide. We have our own cultures from our parent root generations.Adat (Arabic ﻋﺎﺪﺔ) is very important in malay cultures.
When malays already puberty our culture will have a ceremony for khatamal al quran, even getting married khatamal Al quran is a must for the brides & grooms of the ceremony,In Malays culture- pubert its a shame for us to not know to recite surah of Al quran. We also have a madrasah, islamic government school, private islamic schools.located in 14states.Which is Al quran, sunnah, hadith is a major studies for school examination-SPM-A Level.
Islam International University which is from all students around the world.

U need to learn more our culture before u want to say so! its very humilated to say so to the race who have sovereigntyIts very hard for us who is Malays budhhist, malay christians, malay hindus or etc in here-Malaysia.none of Malays in malaysia by other religions,It is a only malays muslims. To know Malays is to know Islam too. That is our cultures. To marry a malay race is must to learn about Islam too.

This website not for you to express unsatisfactions feelings,We are just never want to show off, humble is very good for us.Most reciters from the Tilawah Al Quran is Malays-the International Level Al-Quran Reading competition.I didnt say that we are the best,Allah swt is most Greater. He knows better!

I speak as a Malay in Malaysia. I'm sorry to say that our main guide is not the Al-Quran and the Prophet tradition. There is a lot of culural influence and bidaah instill in the Malay mind that most of us think it is the actual thing in Islam.

Ceremony for khatamal al quran, even getting married khatamal Al quran is a must for the brides & grooms of the ceremony, 3 night "kenduri Arwah" etc is all bida'ah. The majority of the school in Malaysia is of course secular, and there is a lot of it compare to the Islamic school. Do u know how many of our Malay doesnt know how to read the Quran or even to recite Al-Fatihah. And dont let me start on the vast majority of those who know how to read The Quran doesn't even know the proper Tajweed let alone what does it say, astargfiruLLah.

I can say that the equation of Malay=Islam is void currently as there is a lot of non-practicing Muslim Malay out there and ( AstargfiruLLah ) non-Muslim Malay.
I'm not condemning my race, but this is the reality we are facing. But still there exist new voice which is refreshing ( eg The young Mufti from Perlis, whose view-most that i hav heard of- follow the Salaf ) and encouraging.
I pray that God make us and perfect our Islam, our Ibadah, our Iman. InsyaAllah.

Cultural is cultural,Islam is Islam,as you know malays has a cultural,do u want malays still follows the hindus? what do u think of it? Its kinda weird for you huh? lol We just cant close our eyes to see our generations very fanatics about the Idols, akademi fantasia,Can you tell me how to solve it? What can you do? Why dont u express your feelings to the King? or PM? tell them.

Plenty of them who wear 'tudung' & u might think theyre religious? No i dont think so,what do u think of me the city girls without wearing any 'tudung'?!Can u judge me?This is what am tell u for sure.

Were just a nobody who live in the communities,Do something if u can stop them, otherwise just close your side eyes (wink).

Salam brothers and sisters,
I do identify with some of the issues from both sides.
I'm happy to inform you that, both of you are seriously on the right track.
Islam is headed towards recognition in the eyes of the public, and you're doing just that.
We need to discuss more, and to tell you the truth, we don't do that too often to even negate the public negativity towards Islamic Culture or the racial cultures.
Great discussion, you guys...

Dear brothers and sisters,

This is such a good discussion.

Secondly, the matters that revolve around a society are not challenged much by Islam, only when it comes to Shirk, Islam would be a hot topic to talk about.
Islam recognizes issues of races, and clearly indicates the needs to care for such diplomatic matters. This is for the sake of the majority in a society.

But, shirk, shouldn't be compromised.
I say, let's hear the beautiful voice of the Qaris and the Qariahs, because the beauty comes directly from the Al Quran. Of course, the beautiful voice is not the main event. The main even is to recite the Al Quran, and even Al Quran is a source of peace and entertainment, among other things. Al Quran is everything we need to survive in this world, because, Allah instructed us to read and understand. Even to understand the meaning of all the ayah, is not the main thing(tho it is important)... The main thing is for us to read, and secondly, to understand, if we are able to... Not everybody could understand everything, because human beings have different priorities and different level of understanding.

We should care about educating ourselves, but, the rest, Allah takes care of us. We try, and we put a lot of effort into something, but only Allah will open our hearts n minds to understand the meaning of all the ayah. Sure enough, we have to pray to Allah Subhanahuwataala to give us precise understanding, and greatest practice of Islam, but all of us are only human beings, right?

Whatever we couldn't grasp, or practice, or avoid, we should just open our hands and hearts to Allah Subhanahuwataala, and hope for forgiveness. Recalling all the awkward moments and the sins of others will not help. I'm not saying that you do, because you didn't talk about others' sins, but, many people succumb to talking about other people's weaknesses, instead of building the society with his/her leadership and examples.

We care, so, we hope others care for us too, especially from Allah Subhanahuwataala.

Just an opinion.
