Kind of embarressed, I feel like I should know this. Also, if none of this makes sense I apoligize, lol it was talked about yesterday and I can't remember what was said exactly.

In my English class, my teacher was talking about religion. I can't remember how it was brought up. He said Jesus (pbuh) is Jewish, and that Christians were first Jewish. He said that Jesus (pbuh) was a strict follower of Judaism. I honestly do not know a whole lot about Judaism and Christianity, but when he was talking about this he didn't mention Islam. Now, where does Islam stand on this? I feel so stupid asking, lol but it kept me thinking today. Also, I know in Islam we don't believe Jesus (pbuh) died on the cross. How did that story come out if he really wasn't crucified? I'm not saying that he was crucified, it's just I have no other way to word it. Plus, even hearing people talk they say that the Qur'an copied the Bible and the Torah. Can someone explain all this for me? lol, I really do feel stupid. I just never actually took the time to learn all this :shymuslima1:

I hope you all have an understanding of what i'm asking.
Thanks :)

Salaam,

Remember I am not a scholar: Jesus was born into a Jewish family. His mission was to return the Jews back to the faith. Politics got mixed up and things got ugly. The Philistines decided to make very strict laws. The Romans were trying to annex the area.
He was not crucified. A body was there but not that of Jesus.
How did everything get so mixed up. The Bible was compiled almost four centuries after the fact.
The Injil is the book of the Prophet Isa. The Bible was translated into Greek, and then Latin approximately 1640 The King James Version was published in Old English. In 1950 you had Vatacain 1..it revised the Latin and you have had many revisions since.
An argument started about the historical Bible and the real Bible. There is still debate. The Jerusalem Bible is inclusive and does not use the masculine gender.
The concept of the trinity was finalized around 320 AD. There was debate about communion. Is taking communion a symbolic religious gesture or is taking communion actually drinking the blood (wine) and eating the body (wafer). Some schools i.e. Roman Catholic say it is. Others i.e. Lutheran say it is symoblic.
Hope I have not confused you too much.

salam aleikum

they say that the Qur'an copied the Bible and the Torah.
If Quran is copy of Bible and Torah why the Trinity is not coppied ?
and the fact that they believe that Jesus (PBUH) is God ...

:salam2: i hope this will answer part of your question insha-allah

question: If Jesus is just a prophet, how did he die on the cross and rise? Why does the Bible say that He said that the He was the Son of God?

Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; and may His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions.

Jesus, son of Mary, is the slave of Allah and His word to Mary. He is not God, neither is he the son of God. There are many verses in the Quran proving this fact.
Allah says: { And there is none of the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians), but must believe in him ['Iesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary), as only a Messenger of Allâh and a human being],[] before his ['Iesa (Jesus) or a Jew's or a Christian's] death[] (at the time of the appearance of the angel of death).} [4:159]
When the Jews and the Roman's emporor plotted to kill Jesus. Allah made one of the people present similar in everything to Jesus. So, they killed the man who looked like Jesus. They did not kill Jesus. Jesus was raised alive to the Heavens. Allah says: {And because of their saying (in boast), "We killed Messiah 'Iesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary), the Messenger of Allâh," - but they killed him not, nor crucified him, but the resemblance of 'Iesa (Jesus) was put over another man (and they killed that man), and those who differ therein are full of doubts. They have no (certain) knowledge, they follow nothing but conjecture. For surely; they killed him not [i.e. 'Iesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary)} [4:157]
He will come back to earth before the Day of Judgement and will establish Islamic Sharia.
Allah says: {O people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians)! Do not exceed the limits in your religion, nor say of Allâh aught but the truth. The Messiah 'Iesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary), was (no more than) a Messenger of Allâh and His Word, ("Be!" - and he was) which He bestowed on Maryam (Mary) and a spirit (Rûh)[] created by Him; so believe in Allâh and His Messengers. Say not: "Three (trinity)!" Cease! (it is) better for you. For Allâh is (the only) One Ilâh (God), Glory be to Him (Far Exalted is He) above having a son. To Him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth. And Allâh is Allsufficient as a Disposer of affairs.} [4:171]
Al- Bukhari and Muslim reported that 'the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) said: " Allah's Apostle said, "By Him in Whose Hands my soul is, son of Mary (Jesus) will shortly descend amongst you people (Muslims) as a just ruler and will break the cross and kill the pig and abolish the Jizya (a tax taken from the non-Muslims who are in the protection of the Muslim government). Then there will be abundance of money and nobody will accept charitable gifts."
He will stay for 40 years. Then Allah will make him die and this is his death. So, Jesus was not crucified nor was he killed. In fact, he did not die. He is still alive thanks to the power of Allah the Almighty.
If we imagine that Jesus was killed, then crucified, then raised up, there is no evidence in this proving that he was God or a son of God. This is clear to anyone who accepts that Allah, the Almighty, is able to do anything He wishes and that when He wants something, He says to it: {Be and it happens immediately} .
As for your asking about why the Bible says that he is the son of Allah, the answer is that the books of the people of scripture have been altered and modified. Things were added to the Bible and things were taken from it. Any claim that Jesus is a son of Allah is a fabrication because the authentic Injeel, later destroyed, which was first revealed to Jesus did not include any such lies.

Allah knows best

Assalamualaikum.

The answer to your question is also in the Quran.

That they said (in boast), "We killed Christ Jesus the son of Mary, the Messenger of Allah";- but they killed him not, nor crucified him, BUT SO IT WAS MADE TO APPEAR TO THEM, and those who differ therein are full of doubts, with no (certain) knowledge, BUT ONLY CONJECTURE TO FOLLOW, for of a surety they killed him not:- See Quran 4:157 translation by Yusuf Ali

So basically crucifixion about Jesus (sws) was only based on CONJECTURE (Inference or judgment based on inconclusive or incomplete evidence, see American Heritage® Dictionary: Description of conjecture) and this is because Allah swt made it to appear to them (i.e. that Jesus was crucified) which of course, is very easy for him (Allah) to do.

Question
Is it not true that Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) has copied the Qur’an from the Bible?
Answer
Many critics allege that Prophet Muhummad (pbuh) himself was not the author of the Qur’an but he learnt it and/or plagiarised (copied or adapted) it from other human sources or from previous scriptures or revelations.
1. MUHUMMAD LEARNT THE QUR’AN FROM A ROMAN BLACKSMITH WHO WAS A CHRISTIAN
Some Pagans accused the Prophet of learning the Qur’an from a Roman Blacksmith, who was a Christian staying at the outskirts of Makkah. The Prophet very often used to go and watch him do his work. A revelation of the Qur’an was sufficient to dismiss this charge - the Qur’an says in Surah An-Nahl chapter 16 verse 103:
"We know indeed that they say, ‘It is a man that teaches him,’ The tongue of him they wickedly point to is notably foreign, while this is Arabic, pure and clear."
[Al-Qur’an 16:103]
How could a person whose mother tongue was foreign and could hardly speak little but of poor broken Arabic be the source of the Qur’an which is pure, eloquent, fine Arabic? To believe that the blacksmith taught the Prophet the Qur’an is some what similar to believing that a Chinese immigrant to England, who did not know proper English, taught Shakespeare.
2. MUHUMMAD (PBUH) LEARNT FROM WARAQA - THE RELATIVE OF KHADIJAH (RA)
Muhummad’s (pbuh) contacts with the Jewish and Christian Scholars were very limited. The most prominent Christian known to him was an old blind man called Waraqa ibn-Naufal who was a relative of the Prophet’s first wife Khadijah (r.a.). Although of Arab descent, he was a convert to Christianity and was very well versed with the New Testament. The Prophet only met him twice, first when Waraqa was worshipping at the Kaaba (before the Prophetic Mission) and he kissed the Prophet’s forehead affectionately; the second occasion was when the Prophet went to meet Waraqa after receiving the first revelation. Waraqa died three years later and the revelation continued for about 23 years. It is ridiculous to assume that Waraqa was the source of the contents of the Qur’an.
3. PROPHET’S RELIGIOUS DISCUSSIONS WITH THE JEWS AND CHRISTIANS
It is true that the Prophet did have religious discussions with the Jews and Christians but they took place in Madinah more than 13 years after the revelation of the Qur’an had started. The allegation that these Jews and Christians were the source is perverse, since in these discussions Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was performing the roles of a teacher and of a preacher while inviting them to embrace Islam and pointing out that they had deviated from their true teachings of Monotheism. Several of these Jews and Christians later embraced Islam.
4. THE PROPHET LEARNT THE QUR’AN FROM THOSE JEWS AND CHRISTIANS THAT HE MET OUTSIDE ARABIA
All historical records available show that Muhummad (pbuh) had made only three trips outside Makkah before his Prophethood:
i. At the age of 9 he accompanied his mother to Madinah.
ii. Between the age of 9 and 12, he accompanied his uncle Abu-Talib on a business trip to Syria.
iii. At the age of 25 he led Khadija’s Caravan to Syria.
It is highly imaginary to assume that the Qur’an resulted from the occasional chats and meetings with the Christians or Jews from any of the above three trips.
5. LOGICAL GROUNDS TO PROVE THAT THE PROPHET DID NOT LEARN THE QUR’AN FROM JEWS OR CHRISTIANS
i. The day-to-day life of the Prophet was an open book for all to see. In fact a revelation came asking people to give the Prophet (pbuh) privacy in his own home. If the Prophet had been meeting people who told him what to say as a revelation from God, this would not have been hidden for very long.
ii. The extremely prominent Quraish nobles who followed the Prophet and accepted Islam were wise and intelligent men who would have easily noticed anything suspicious about the way in which the Prophet brought the revelations to them - more so since the Prophetic mission lasted 23 years.
iii. The enemies of the Prophet kept a close watch on him in order to find proof for their claim that he was a liar - they could not point out even a single instance when the Prophet may have had a secret rendezvous with particular Jews and Christians.
iv. It is inconceivable that any human author of the Qur’an would have accepted a situation in which he received no credit whatsoever for originating the Qur’an.
Thus, historically and logically it cannot be established that there was a human source for the Qur’an.
6. MUHUMMAD (PBUH) WAS AN ILLITERATE
The theory that Muhummad (pbuh) authored the Qur’an or copied from other sources can be disproved by the single historical fact that he was illiterate.
Allah testifies Himself in the Qur’an
In Surah Al-Ankabut chapter no.29 verse 48
"And thou was not (able) to recite a Book before this (Book came), nor art thou (able) to transcribe it with thy right hand: in that case, indeed, would the talkers of vanities have doubted."
[Al-Qur’an 29:48]
Allah (swt) knew that many would doubt the authenticity of the Qur’an and would ascribe it to Prophet Muhummad (pbuh). Therefore Allah in His Divine Wisdom chose the last and final Messenger to be an ‘Ummi’, i.e. unlettered, so that the talkers of vanity would not then have the slightest justification to doubt the Prophet. The accusation of his enemies that he had copied the Qur’an from other sources and rehashed it all in a beautiful language might have carried some weight, but even this flimsy pretence has been deprived to the unbeliever and the cynic.
Allah reconfirms in the Qur’an in Surah Al A’raf chapter 7 verse 157:
"Those who follow the Messenger, the unlettered Prophet, whom they find mentioned in their own (Scriptures) in the Law and the Gospel"
The prophecy of coming of the unlettered Prophet (pbuh) is also mentioned in the Bible in the book of Isaiah chapter 29 verse 12.
"And the book is delivered to him that is not learned."
[Isaiah 29:12]
The Qur’an testifies in no less than four different places that the Prophet (pbuh) was illiterate. It is also mentioned in Surah A’raf chapter 7 verse 158 and in Surah Al-Jumu’a chapter 62 verse 2.
7. ARABIC VERSION OF THE BIBLE WAS NOT PRESENT
The Arabic version of the Bible was not present at the time of Prophet Muhummad (pbuh). The earliest Arabic version of the Old Testament is that of R. Saadias Gaon of 900 C.E. - more than 250 years after the death of our beloved Prophet. The oldest Arabic version of the new Testament was published by Erpenius in 1616 C.E. - about a thousand years after the demise of our Prophet.
8. SIMILARITIES IN THE QUR’AN AND THE BIBLE DUE TO COMMON SOURCE
Similarities between the Qur’an and the Bible does not necessarily mean that the former has been copied from the latter. In fact it gives evidence that both of them are based on a common third source; all divine revelations came from the same source - the one universal God. No matter what human changes were introduced into some of these Judeo-Christian and other older religious scriptures that had distorted their originality, there are some areas that have remained free from distortion and thus are common to many religions.
It is true that there are some similar parallels between the Qur’an and the Bible but this is not sufficient to accuse Muhummad (pbuh) of compiling or copying from the Bible. The same logic would then also be applicable to teachings of Christianity and Judaism and thus one could wrongly claim that Jesus (pbuh) was not a genuine Prophet (God forbid) and that he simply copied from the Old Testament.
The similarities between the two signify a common source that is one true God and the continuation of the basic message of monotheism and not that the later prophets have plagiarised from the previous prophets.
If someone copies during an examination he will surely not write in the answer sheet that he has copied from his neighbour or Mr. XYZ. Prophet Muhummad (pbuh) gave due respect and credit to all the previous prophets (pbut). The Qur’an also mentions the various revelations given by Almighty God to different prophets.
9. MUSLIMS BELIEVE IN THE TAURAH, ZABOOR, INJEEL AND QUR’AN
Four revelations of Allah (swt) are mentioned by name in the Qur’an: the Taurah, the Zaboor, the Injeel and the Qur’an.
Taurah, the revelation i.e. the Wahi given to Moosa (a. s.) i.e. Moses (pbuh).
Zaboor, the revelation i.e. the Wahi given to Dawood (a.s.) i.e. David (pbuh).
Injeel, the revelation i.e. the Wahi given to Isa (A.S.) ie. Jesus (pbuh).
‘Al-Qur’an’, the last and final Wahi i.e. revelation given to the last and final Messenger Muhammad (pbuh).
It is an article of faith for every Muslim to believe in all the Prophets of God and all revelations of God. However, the present day Bible has the first five books of the Old Testament attributed to Moses and the Psalms attributed to David. Moreover the New Testament or the four Gospels of the New Testament are not the Taurah, the Zaboor or the Injeel, which the Qur’an refers to. These books of the present day Bible may partly contain the word of God but these books are certainly not the exact, accurate and complete revelations given to the prophets.
The Qur’an presents all the different prophets of Allah as belonging to one single brotherhood; all had a similar prophetic mission and the same basic message. Because of this, the fundamental teachings of the major faiths cannot be contradictory, even if there has been a considerable passage of time between the different prophetic missions, because the source of these missions was one: Almighty God, Allah. This is why the Qur’an says that the differences which exist between various religions are not the responsibility of the prophets, but of the followers of these prophets who forgot part of what they had been taught, and furthermore, misinterpreted and changed the scriptures. The Qur’an cannot therefore be seen as a scripture which competes with the teachings of Moses, Jesus and the other prophets. On the contrary, it confirms, completes and perfects the messages that they brought to their people.
Another name for the Qur’an is the ‘The Furqan’ which means the criteria to judge the right from the wrong, and it is on the basis of the Qur’an that we can decipher which part of the previous scriptures can be considered to be the word of God.
10. SCIENTIFIC COMPARISON BETWEEN QUR’AN AND BIBLE
If you glance through the Bible and the Qur’an you may find several points which appear to be exactly the same in both of them, but when you analyse them closely, you realise that there is a difference of ‘chalk and cheese’ between them. Only based on historical details it is difficult for someone who is neither conversant with Christianity or Islam to come to a firm decision as to which of the scriptures is true; however if you verify the relevant passages of both the scriptures against scientific knowledge, you will yourself realize the truth.
a. Creation of the Universe in Six Days
As per the Bible, in the first book of Genesis in Chapter One, the universe was created in six days and each day is defined as a twenty-four hours period. Even though the Qur’an mentions that the universe was created in six ‘Ayyaams’, ‘Ayyaam’ is the plural of years; this word has two meanings: firstly, it means a standard twenty-four hours period i.e. a day, and secondly, it also means stage, period or epoch which is a very long period of time.
When the Qur’an mentions that the universe was created in six ‘Ayyaams’, it refers to the creation of the heavens and the earth in six long periods or epochs; scientists have no objection to this statement. The creation of the universe has taken billions of years, which proves false or contradicts the concept of the Bible which states that the creation of the Universe took six days of twenty-four hour durations each.
b. Sun Created After the Day
The Bible says in chapter 1, verses 3-5, of Genesis that the phenomenon of day and night was created on the first day of creation of the Universe by God. The light circulating in the universe is the result of a complex reaction in the stars; these stars were created according to the Bible (Genesis chapter 1 verse 14 to 19) on the fourth day. It is illogical to mention the result that is the light (the phenomenon of day and night) was created on the first day of Creation when the cause or source of the light was created three days later. Moreover the existence of evening and morning as elements of a single day is only conceivable after the creation of the earth and its rotation around the sun. In contrast with the contents of the Bible on this issue, the Qur’an does not give any unscientific sequence of Creation. Hence it is absolutely absurd to say that Prophet Muhummad (pbuh) copied the passages pertaining to the creation of the universe from the Bible but missed out this illogical and fantastic sequence of the Bible.
c. Creation of the Sun, The Earth and the Moon
According to the Bible, Book of Genesis, chapter 1, verses 9 to 13, the earth was created on the third day, and as per verses 14 to 19, the sun and the moon were created on the fourth day. The earth and the moon emanated, as we know, from their original star, the Sun. Hence to place the creation of the sun and the moon after the creation of the earth is contrary to the established idea about the formation of the solar system.
d. Vegetation Created on the third day and Sun on the fourth day
According to the Bible, Book of Genesis, chapter 1, verses 11-13, vegetation was created on the third day along with seed-bearing grasses, plants and trees; and further on as per verses 14-19, the sun was created on the fourth day. How is it scientifically possible for the vegetation to have appeared without the presence of the sun, as has been stated in the Bible?
If Prophet Muhummad (pbuh) was indeed the author of the Qur’an and had copied its contents from the Bible, how did he manage to avoid the factual errors that the Bible contains? The Qur’an does not contain any statements which are incompatible with scientific facts.
e. The Sun and the Moon both Emit light
According to the Bible both the sun and the moon emit their own light. In the Book of Genesis, chapter 1, verse 16 says, "And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night".
Science tells us today that the moon does not have its own light. This confirms the Qur’anic concept that the light of the moon is a reflected light. To think that 1400 years ago, Prophet Muhummad (pbuh) corrected these scientific errors in the Bible and then copied such corrected passages in the Qur’an is to think of something impossible.
11. ADAM (PBUH), THE FIRST MAN ON EARTH, LIVED 5,800 YEARS AGO
As per the genealogy of Jesus Christ given in the Bible, from Jesus through Abraham (pbuh) to the first man on earth i.e. Adam (pbuh), Adam appeared on the earth approximately 5800 years ago:
i. 1948 years between Adam (pbuh) and Abraham (pbuh)
ii. Approximately 1800 years between Abraham (pbuh) and Jesus (pbuh)
iii. 2000 years from Jesus (pbuh) till today
These figures are further confused by the fact that the Jewish calendar is currently on or about 5800 years old.
There is sufficient evidence from archaeological and anthropological sources to suggest that the first human being on earth was present tens of thousands of years ago and not merely 5,800 years ago as is suggested by the Bible.
The Qur’an too speaks about Adam (pbuh) as the first man on earth but it does not suggest any date or period of his life on earth, unlike the Bible - what the Bible says in this regard is totally incompatible with science.
12. NOAH (PBUH) AND THE FLOOD
The Biblical description of the flood in Genesis chapter 6, 7 and 8 indicates that the deluge was universal and it destroyed every living thing on earth, except those present with Noah (pbuh) in the ark. The description suggests that the event took place 1656 years after the creation of Adam (pbuh) or 292 years before the birth of Abraham, at a time when Noah (pbuh) was 600 years old. Thus the flood may have occurred in the 21st or 22nd Century B.C.
This story of the flood, as given in the Bible, contradicts scientific evidence from archaelogical sources which indicate that the eleventh dynasty in Egypt and the third dynasty in Babylonia were in existence without any break in civilisation and in a manner totally unaffected by any major calamity which may have occurred in the 21st century B.C. This contradicts the Biblical story that the whole world had been immersed in the flood water. In contrast to this, the Qur’anic presentation of the story of Noah and the flood does not conflict with scientific evidence or archaeological data; firstly, the Qur’an does not indicate any specific date or year of the occurance of that event, and secondly, according to the Qur’an the flood was not a universal phenomenon which destroyed complete life on earth. In fact the Qur’an specifically mentions that the flood was a localised event only involving the people of Noah.
It is illogical to assume that Prophet Muhummad (pbuh) had borrowed the story of the flood from the Bible and corrected the mistakes before mentioning it in the Qur’an.
13. MOSES (PBUH) AND PHARAOH OF THE EXODUS
The story of Moses (pbuh) and the Pharaoh of the Exodus are very much identical in the Qur’an and the Bible. Both scriptures agree that the Pharaoh drowned when he tried to pursue Moses (pbuh) and led the Israelites across a stretch of water that they crossed. The Qur’an gives an additional piece of information in Surah Yunus chapter 10 verse 92:
"This day shall We save thee in thy body, that thou mayest be a sign to those who come after thee! But verily, many among mankind are heedless of Our Signs!"
[Al-Qur’an 10:92]
Dr. Maurice Bucaille, after a thorough research proved that although Rameses II was known to have persecuted the Israelites as per the Bible, he actually died while Moses (pbuh) was taking refuge in Median. Rameses II’s son Merneptah who succeeded him as Pharaoh drowned during the exodus. In 1898, the mummified body of Merneptah was found in the valley of Kings in Egypt. In 1975, Dr. Maurice Bucaille with other doctors received permission to examine the Mummy of Merneptah, the findings of which proved that Merneptah probably died from drowning or a violent shock which immediately preceeded the moment of drowning. Thus the Qur’anic verse that we shall save his body as a sign, has been fulfilled by the Pharaohs’ body being kept at the Royal Mummies room in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.
This verse of the Qur’an compelled Dr. Maurice Bucaille, who was a Christian then, to study the Qur’an. He later wrote a book ‘The Bible, the Qur’an and Science’, and confessed that the author of the Qur’an can be no one else besides God Himself. Thus he embraced Islam.
14. QUR’AN IS A BOOK FROM ALLAH
These evidences are sufficient to conclude that the Qur’an was not copied from the Bible, but that the Qur’an is the Furqaan - ‘the Criteria’ to judge right from wrong and it should be used to decipher which portion of the Bible may be considered as the Word of God.
The Qur’an itself testifies in Surah Sajda chapter 32 verse 1 to 3
Alif Laam Meem.
(This is) the revelation of the Book in which there is no doubt – from the Lord of the Worlds.
Or do they say, ‘He has forged it’? Nay, it is the Truth from thy Lord, that thou mayest admonish a people to whom no warner has come before thee: in order that they may receive guidance."
[Al-Qur’an 32:1-3]

abdu'Allah
Assalamu-alaikum Sister,

:salam2:

There is no need to be embarrased sister as it is quite a complicated issue to deal with.

I too don't know very much about it but whatever little I have understood from the studies, I am putting it here and hope that it will be helpful in someway or the other, inshaAllah.

"O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the knowledge that does not bring benefit."

I am dividing it into two parts. First part will be covering the issue of Judaism and Christianity and how they came to be called they way they are now from the historical point of view and then in the second part I will try to bring some proofs from the Quran.

PART I

We will see in this part that what Judaism really is, inshaAllah and is it really a name of a religion or a race. We will examine Christianity same way as well, isnhaAllah.

JUDAISM

It all starts with Abraham (PBUH) who was from the progeny of Sem or Shem or Saam (this is where the word SEMITIC comes from) who was the son of Noah (PBUH).

Abraham (PBUH) had two sons from two different wives namely Sarah and Hagar. His eldest son, Ishmael (from Hagar) is the one from whom comes the Arabs and his younger son Isaac (from Sarah) in the father of the Israelites or Children of Israel (Bani Israel for whom the word Jew has now become a synonym).

Now the two religions, Judaism and Christianity link themselves to Abraham from his younger son Isaac and Islam links itself to Abraham from his older son Ishmael.

Jacob or Yakob (Yaqub in Quran)

Jacob (a.k.a. Israel) was the son of Isaac. Jacob had four wives from whom he had tweleve children and the twelve became twelve tribes of Israel,

The "sons" and tribe names are:
Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Dan, Naphtali, Gad, Asher, Issachar, Zebulun, Manasseh, Ephraim, and Benjamin.

(In parts of the Bible, Ephraim and Manasseh are treated as together constituting the House of Joseph, while the Levi have a special religious role and had only scattered cities as territory; Hence, traditionally either Ephraim and Manasseh were counted as one tribe, or Levi wasn't counted, so that together the tribes were the Twelve Tribes of Israel.)

Note:
The name that I coloured green will in the end solve some problems, inshaAllah.

History of Israelites is one of the richest and very vast so I will try to pin point only those events that are most important and most relevant to our topic.

Israelites, due to a famine had to move to Egypt, where after many generations they became enslaved. God later commanded Moses to redeem the Israelites from slavery, leading to the Exodus from Egypt.

The Israelites gathered at Mount Sinai in 1313 BCE (Jewish Year 2448) and received the Torah - the five books of Moses: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. These books, together with Nevi'im and Ketuvim are known as Torah Shebikhtav: literally the "Written Torah," as opposed to the Oral Torah, which refers to the Mishna and the Talmud. Eventually, God led them to the land of Israel.
God designated the descendants of Aaron, Moses' brother, to be a priestly class within the Israelite community. They first officiated in the tabernacle (a portable house of worship), and later their descendants were in charge of worship in the Temple in Jerusalem.
Once the Israelites had settled in the land of Israel, the tabernacle was planted in the city of Shiloh for over 300 years during which time God provided great men, and occasionally women, to rally the nation against attacking enemies, some of which were sent by God as a punishment for the sins of the people. This is described in the Book of Joshua and the Book of Judges. As time went on, the spiritual level of the nation declined to the point that God allowed the Philistines to capture the tabernacle in Shiloh.
The people of Israel then told Samuel the prophet that they had reached the point where they needed to be governed by a permanent king, as were other nations, as described in the Books of Samuel. Samuel grudgingly acceded to this request and appointed Saul, a great but very humble man, to be their King. When the people pressured Saul into going against a command conveyed to him by Samuel, God told Samuel to appoint David in his stead.
Once King David was established, he told the prophet Nathan that he would like to build a permanent temple, and as a reward for his actions, God promised David that he would allow his son to build the temple and the throne would never depart from his children (David himself was not allowed to build the temple because he had been involved in many wars, making it inappropriate for him to build a temple representing peace). As a result, it was David's son Solomon who built the first permanent temple according to God's will, in Jerusalem, as described in the Books of Kings.

Now, here is the twist

After Solomon's reign the nation split into two kingdoms, Israel, consisting of ten of the tribes (in the north), and Judah, consisting of the tribes of Judah and Benjamin (in the south). Israel was conquered by the Assyrian ruler Shalmaneser V in the 8th century BCE. There is no commonly accepted historical record of those ten tribes, which are sometimes referred to as the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel.

The kingdom of Judah was conquered by a Babylonian army in the early 6th century BCE. The Judahite elite was exiled to Babylon, but later at least a part of them returned to their homeland, led by prophets Ezra and Nehemiah, after the subsequent conquest of Babylonia by the Persians. Jews were allowed to return with the Temple vessels that the Babylonians had taken. Construction of the Second Temple was completed under the spiritual leadership of the Prophets Haggai and Zechariah.
At this point there was the formation of Jewish political-religious factions, the most important of which would later be called Sadduccees and Pharisees.

All the tribes except the tribes of Judah and Benjamin were lost and are still known as TEN LOST TRIBES OF ISRAEL.

This passage explains it best as to how the religion that was given to the Israelites (Twelve Tribes of Israel) came to be called as Judaism.

The religion that was given to the Israelites was obviously not named by God as Judaism as the word Judaism is derived from Judah (one of the sons of Jacob) who was far earlier than Moses whom the Jews revere the most and it only came to be known as Judaism due to the survival of the only tribe of Judah and other tribes being lost.

To be continued .... inshaAllah

P.S.
All I have tried to show by this is that Judaism is not a name of a religion in a strict sense and the biggest reason that it is known by this name now is the survival of the tribe of Judah and the establishment of Judea as Kingdom.

I'd second the recommendation about watching Shiekh Ahmad Deedat debates ...

you will quickly realise how thin the Christian arguments are ...

He was briliant. I really adore him. May Allah have mercy on his soul. Amin.

Salam alaikum. This is a very brief summary of what I know.
Jesus was born into a Jewish family. He very strongly criticised the Rabbis that had changed the rules of God to suit themselves (eg, making interest allowable - and I can think of some other sick Babylonian customs I'd rather not type out). In the Quran it also mentions that many of the Jews have taken their Rabbis as their Gods excepting whatever sick or sinful idea their religious leaders put forward as 'permissible'.
That's why the many of the Rabbis at that time were bent on getting Jesus out of the picture.

EDIT: Just read Mohsin's post - I found it to be great information for me, thank you for sharing :)

Here is the continuation from the last post

Assalamu-alaikum

Continued from the last post....

In the earlier post I tried to establish that Judaism is not the name of the religion that was given to Jews (more specifically to the Bani Israel). And we saw that the main reason that religion of the Bani Israel came to be known as Judaism was due to two main reasons viz,

1. The capturing of the northern Kingdom of Israelites which was known as Kingdom of Israel by the Assyrians and its complete destruction and the exile of the 10 tribes living there and them being lost.

2. Establishment of Kingdom of JUDAH after the return from exile of the tribes of the southern Kingdom which was known as Kingdom of Judah.

Due to these two main factors whoever from the Israelites could return to Judea (Kingdom of Judah) did and due to this all were called Jews rather than Israelites and the name Jew were applied to them all.
(Many people are of the view that people from other tribes returned too)

The question now arises is what was the real name of that religion of Bani Israel ? Many will think I have gone crazy if I will say it was Islam. So, I will not say that but I will say that whatever the name of that religion was it had to be synonym or parallel of Islam in Hebrew since Islam asks for complete submission to the will of God and keeping His commandments.

VERSES FROM THE BIBLE [KJV] TO SUPPORT MY VIEW.

{26:5} Because that Abraham
obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments,
my statutes, and my laws.
Genesis

{26:3} If ye walk in my statutes, and keep my
commandments, and do them;
Leviticus

{16:27} And it came to pass, [that] there went out [some]
of the people on the seventh day for to gather, and they
found none. {16:28} And the LORD said unto Moses, How
long refuse ye to keep my commandments and my laws?
Exodus

{26:14} But if ye will not hearken unto me, and will not
do all these commandments; {26:15} And if ye shall
despise my statutes, or if your soul abhor my judgments, so
that ye will not do all my commandments, [but] that ye
break my covenant:
Leviticus

{4:1} Now therefore hearken, O Israel, unto the statutes
and unto the judgments, which I teach you, for to do [them,]
that ye may live, and go in and possess the land which the
LORD God of your fathers giveth you. {4:2} Ye shall not
add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye
diminish [ought] from it, that ye may keep the
commandments of the LORD your God which I command
you.
Deuteronomy

{6:17} Ye shall diligently keep
the commandments of the LORD your God, and his
testimonies, and his statutes, which he hath commanded
thee.
Deuteronomy

We can arrive to the conclusion from the above mentioned verses that the religion that was given to Bani Israel was a religion that sought complete obidience and submission to the will or commandments of G-d whether it be faith, deeds, society, politics, economics or anyother thing else. God gave them commandments related to every aspect of life and demanded them to follow them and submit themselves to his will. In simple terms this is "ISLAM".

The name Judaism is given to that religion due to its followers and not because the name of the religion is Judaism and its followers are Jews.

Some of muslims too, who are not well versed in Quran and Hadith think that Islam is a new religion that started with advent of Muhammad SAW but on the contrary Quran says Islam was, is and will always be the only religion God chose for mankind. In simple words God offered mankind through all his messengers and books to submit to his will in this world and be successful in this world and hereafter both. All the messengers of God called their people to same creed of monotheism and asked them to follow in their footsteps.
(See Surah Shu'ara)
Muhammad SAW was not the founder of this creed or religion rather he was the last link of the chain of the messengers of God who all came with the same message.

Islam (complete submission to the will of God) is the religion all the messengers were sent with, they all called to the same creed.

Quran says,

He (Allâh) has ordained for you the same religion (Islâmic Monothesim) which He ordained for Nûh (Noah), and that which We have revealed to you (O Muhammad SAW), and that which We ordained for Ibrahîm (Abraham), Mûsa (Moses) and 'Īsā (Jesus) saying you should establish religion (i.e. to do what it orders you to do practically), and make no divisions[] in it (religion) (i.e. various sects in religion). Intolerable for the Mushrikûn[] , is that (Islâmic Monothesim) to which you (O Muhammad SAW) call them. Allâh chooses for Himself whom He wills, and guides unto Himself who turns to Him in repentance and in obedience. (13) And they divided not till after knowledge had come to them, through (selfish) transgression between themselves. And had it not been for a Word that went forth before from your Lord for an appointed term, the matter would have been settled between them. And verily, those who were made to inherit the Scripture [i.e. the Taurâh (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel)] after them (i.e. Jews and Christians) are in grave doubt concerning it (i.e. Allâh's true religion — Islâm or the Qur'ân). (14)
And
Truly, the religion with Allâh is Islâm. Those who were given the Scripture (Jews and Christians) did not differ except, out of mutual jealousy, after knowledge had come to them. And whoever disbelieves in the Ayât (proofs, evidences, verses, signs, revelations, etc.) of Allâh, then surely, Allâh is Swift in calling to account. (19) So if they dispute with you (Muhammad SAW) say: "I have submitted myself to Allâh (in Islâm), and (so have) those who follow me." And say to those who were given the Scripture (Jews and Christians) and to those who are illiterates (Arab pagans): "Do you (also) submit yourselves (to Allâh in Islâm)?" If they do, they are rightly guided; but if they turn away, your duty is only to convey the Message; and Allâh is All-Seer of (His ) slaves[] (20)
And

And who turns away from the religion of Ibrâhim (Abraham) (i.e. Islâmic Monotheism) except him who befools himself? Truly, We chose him in this world and verily, in the Hereafter he will be among the righteous. (130) When his Lord said to him, "Submit (i.e. be a Muslim)!" He said, "I have submitted myself (as a Muslim) to the Lord of the 'Alamîn (mankind, jinn and all that exists)." (131) And this (submission to Allâh, Islâm) was enjoined by Ibrâhim (Abraham) upon his sons and by Ya'qûb (Jacob), (saying), "O my sons! Allâh has chosen for you the (true) religion, then die not except in the Faith of Islâm (as Muslims - Islâmic Monotheism)." (132) Or were you witnesses when death approached Ya'qûb (Jacob)? When he said unto his sons, "What will you worship after me?" They said, "We shall worship your Ilâh [] (God - Allâh), the Ilâh (God) of your fathers, Ibrâhim (Abraham), Ismâ'il (Ishmael), Ishâq (Isaac), One Ilâh (God), and to Him we submit (in Islâm)." (133)

THIS IS ONE OF THE REASONS THAT YOUR TEACHER DID NOT MENTION ISLAM WHILE TALKING ABOUT JESUS

As salaamu Alaikum,

Neither am I a scholar, but I have studies these doctrines because I come from a Christian background and needed to be more knowledgeable of these things when giving Dawah to my family and friends. Just some quick points here. This is a intense subject and too info much to post on here:

*It is important to know that not all early Christians believed in Jesus(Isa) pbuh as God before this doctrine was approved.

*The word trinity is not found in the torah or injel; however the doctrine of the father son and holy spirit is believed to encompass this concept.

*It is important to note as mentioned before these are written accounts from men well after the death of Jesus/Isa PBUH.

The Torah and the Injel are 2 separate historical works that were put together by the church fathers forming the canonization of the bible. Which is why they seem to be to very distinct works of literature. The Torah focuses more on the oneness of God while the Injel focuses on both one God and then drifts into aspects of the trinity. The trinity doctrine is more so the work of Paul. You can find various contradictions of God alone and trinity, and resurrection in Matthew, Mark, & Luke. There are many passages in the bible where Jesus pbuh clarify his position, and the Lord’s Prayer is one example.

The Quran is no where near a copy of the Bible (the composition of the torah and injel). It is more of a reformation of what came before and what was lost in between. The Quran is the clear truth and does not deviate from the Oneness of Allah. These are all branches of the same family, people of the book, all were given messengers, and the scriptures to be mindful of the straight path. Per the Quran, but some deviated.

Many more, but here’s one:
2:213 Al Baqarah
(All) people are a single nation; so Allah raised prophets as bearers of good news and as warners, and He revealed with them the Book with truth, that it might judge between people in that in which they differed; and none but the very people who were given it differed about it after clear arguments had come to them, revolting among themselves; so Allah has guided by His will those who believe to the truth about which they differed and Allah guides whom He pleases to the right path.

My understanding supported by a Jewish Website

:salam2:

As I promised earlier that I will post something about Christianity as well, InshaAllah I will do it soon but before that I want to post some more about Judaism. I found some proof backing what I wrote about Judaism so I thought to post it first. InshaAllah, next post will be about Jesus and Christianity.

Origins of the Words "Jew" and "Judaism"

The original name for the people we now call Jews was Hebrews. The word "Hebrew" (in Hebrew, "Ivri") is first used in the Torah to describe Abraham (Gen. 14:13). The word is apparently derived from the name Eber, one of Abraham's ancestors. Another tradition teaches that the word comes from the word "eyver," which means "the other side," referring to the fact that Abraham came from the other side of the Euphrates, or referring to the fact Abraham was separated from the other nations morally and spiritually.

Another name used for the people is Children of Israel or Israelites, which refers to the fact that the people are descendants of Jacob, who was also called Israel.

The word "Jew" (in Hebrew, "Yehudi") is derived from the name Judah, which was the name of one of Jacob's twelve sons. Judah was the ancestor of one of the tribes of Israel, which was named after him. Likewise, the word Judaism literally means "Judah-ism," that is, the religion of the Yehudim. Other sources, however, say that the word "Yehudim" means "People of G-d," because the first three letters of "Yehudah" are the same as the first three letters of G-d's four-letter name.

Originally, the term Yehudi referred specifically to members of the tribe of Judah, as distinguished from the other tribes of Israel. However, after the death of King Solomon, the nation of Israel was split into two kingdoms: the kingdom of Judah and the kingdom of Israel (I Kings 12; II Chronicles 10). After that time, the word Yehudi could properly be used to describe anyone from the kingdom of Judah, which included the tribes of Judah, Benjamin and Levi, as well as scattered settlements from other tribes. The most obvious biblical example of this usage is in Esther 2:5, where Mordecai is referred to as both a Yehudi and a member of the tribe of Benjamin.

In the 6th century B.C.E., the kingdom of Israel was conquered by Assyria and the ten tribes were exiled from the land (II Kings 17), leaving only the tribes in the kingdom of Judah remaining to carry on Abraham's heritage. These people of the kingdom of Judah were generally known to themselves and to other nations as Yehudim (Jews), and that name continues to be used today. In common speech, the word "Jew" is used to refer to all of the physical and spiritual descendants of Jacob/Israel, as well as to the patriarchs Abraham and Isaac and their wives, and the word "Judaism" is used to refer to their beliefs. Technically, this usage is inaccurate, just as it is technically inaccurate to use the word "Indian" to refer to the original inhabitants of the Americas. However, this technically inaccurate usage is common both within the Jewish community and outside of it, and is therefore used throughout this site.
