just a Question in my mind, i read the ablution (wudu) section in Al-bukhari but i know worry that my way of doing wudu is not proper.

I do wudu like normally anyone wud do but for masa i take my three finger run them back and forth on my head then clean my ears with one finger and clean the back of my neck with my hand, also i take one finger and clean in between my toes then wash my feet.

I didn't read these 2 extra steps in any hadith in al-bukhari but then again some of the hadith were a lil vague, this way i just learned it from someone who told me this was a proper way of doing wudu.

Should i stop doing these things? i just want to make sure its not bidah

JazakAllah khair

These are the way that i have read in hadith on how to do wudu, if you read carefully it doesn't describe the masah i or other people do it here

So thats why im worried about it being bidah

Bukhari :: Book 1 :: Volume 4 :: Hadith 142
Narrated 'Ata' bin Yasar:
Ibn 'Abbas performed ablution and washed his face (in the following way): He ladled out a handful of water, rinsed his mouth and washed his nose with it by putting in water and then blowing it out. He then, took another handful (of water) and did like this (gesturing) joining both hands, and washed his face, took another handful of water and washed his right forearm. He again took another handful of water and washed his left forearm, and passed wet hands over his head and took another handful of water and poured it over his right foot (up to his ankles) and washed it thoroughly and similarly took another handful of water and washed thoroughly his left foot (up to the ankles) and said, "I saw Allah's Apostle performing ablution in this way."

Bukhari :: Book 1 :: Volume 4 :: Hadith 185
Narrated Yahya Al-Mazini:
A person asked 'Abdullah bin Zaid who was the grandfather of 'Amr bin Yahya, "Can you show me how Allah's Apostle used to perform ablution?" 'Abdullah bin Zaid replied in the affirmative and asked for water. He poured it on his hands and washed them twice, then he rinsed his mouth thrice and washed his nose with water thrice by putting water in it and blowing it out. He washed his face thrice and after that he washed his forearms up to the elbows twice and then passed his wet hands over his head from its front to its back and vice versa (beginning from the front and taking them to the back of his head up to the nape of the neck and then brought them to the front again from where he had started) and washed his feet (up to the ankles).

Bukhari :: Book 1 :: Volume 4 :: Hadith 186
Narrated 'Amr:
My father saw 'Amr bin Abi Hasan asking 'Abdullah bin Zaid about the ablution of the Prophet. 'Abdullah bin Zaid asked for earthen-ware pot containing water and in front of them performed ablution like that of the Prophet . He poured water from the pot over his hand and washed his hands thrice and then he put his hands in the pot and rinsed his mouth and washed his nose by putting water in it and then blowing it out with three handfuls of water. Again he put his hand in the water and washed his face thrice and washed his forearms up to the elbows twice; and then put his hands in the water and then passed them over his head by bringing them to the front and then to the rear of the head once, and then he washed his feet up to the ankles.

Question: What is the ruling regarding wiping the neck during wudhoo. and washing the (required) parts (of the body) for wudhoo. more than three times?

Answered by Shaykh Ibn Uthaymeen rahemuhaullah

Wiping the neck during wudhoo is an innovation,and washing the (required) parts (of the body) for the wudhoo more than three times is an unnecessary extravagance (waste).

As for washing the feet, you should do it carefully, making sure it has been washed properly.

It has been confrimed in mutawatir (continuous) reports fro the Prophet sallahu alyhi wassalam. Abbdullah Ibn Umar said: "The prophet lagged behind us in one of our travels.He caught up with us after we had delayed the afternoon prayer. We started to make ablotuion and were wiping over our feet, when he (sallahu alyhi wassalam) said: "Woe to the heels, save them from the Hell- fire" repeaing it two or three times

Sister wiping ears is part of sunnah :)

Al Miqdam ibn Ma`d Yakrib narrated that the Prophet sallahu alyhi wassalam wiped his head and his ears, the interior and exterio, while making ablution. he also put his finger inside his ears. ( Related by Aboo Dawud and Tahawii)

Salaamalaykum waa rahmatullahi,

The wiping over the neck is prominent in India and Pakistan, but it is not from the Sunnah of Rasool SallAllahu Alleihi Wa Sallam.

Since brothers and sisters are having a hard time to understand the hadeeth. Please refer to these videos, how to make wudhu.

First, understand completely what is being discussed in this thread. Understand it from the point of view of evidence from the Sunnah. The part of understanding also involves that all of our acts of worship in Islam are based on Quran and Sunnah. We leave everything with no or weak evidence.

Then learn this information that you have come across, gathering all the evidences that support it.

Lack of understanding can lead you to advise someone that is incorrect. And lack of learning would make you lose credibility in your correction of someone. You would be saying "I think this.. what was written". We should first understand and learn the matter.

Then, naseeha has to be given in the most gentlest of manners in the appropriate time and with choicest use of words. In you case, you are trying to inform your parents, you need to take that into consideration and give them the respect that they deserve.

Bring the topic up gradually. Emphasize that deen is based on what is written in Quran and from Sunnah of Rasool SallAllahu Alleihi Wa Sallam. Build on this foundation, inform them about the hadeeth in which there is no mention of wiping over necks while performing wudhu. Tell them "Shouldn't we all perform wudhu how our beloved prophet SallAllahu Alleihi Wasallam performed ?" :)

Do not go up to your parent and accuse them or yourself of 'bidah'. This will make them feel hurt or make them get very defensive. Remember dawah is an invitation. It is supposed to be done in the best of manners and choicest use of words.

And most importantly, make dua for yourself, your family and your parents that Allah azz zawajal keeps them firm on Quran and Sunnah.

May Allah subhaanaho waa ta'ala grant us all success and make it easy for us. Ameen

Of course you should tell them sis, but try to do it in a manner not seeking their mistakes but one of discovery. I've often seen (especially with the guys) that it works out better. We have to use Hikmah in all of our interactions, so if you just up and point out "You're doing this wrong all your life!" Then instead of listening to your words, and if it is haqq, people get very defensive because you have undermined their life efforts.

However, if you try and say that this is something you just learned and came across and didn't know before. You can even ask if they've come across any evidence from Qur'aan and Sunnah otherwise, and how there is not even one hadeeth which mentions wiping the neck from the Sunnah and the shyookh have given fatwas explaining that there wasnt. Like it's a series of give and take, don't get angry and don't get offended. If they pull out the Hanafi Madhab card (which some people before have done on me - not parents alhamdulillah) mention how you have read he said that his opinions should be measured up the Sunnah and taken accordingly on whether they were correct or not.

SubhanAllaah I don't know much ukhti, but this is just what I've come across, that if you ask things as questions putting across a point, or if you do not sound demanding and self assured but humble instead, putting the words of the scholars forward and not making it like your own opinion - it works better inshaAllaah. Especially when you are younger.

Allaah knows best

Exactly !.. This is what we want to avoid. A confrontation. With the parents feeling, now this boy has become a young adult and he is criticizing us in every matter and trying to blame us.

Instead, wisdom needs to be used. The foundation first needs to be built. Emphasize about Quran and Sunnah. Then present the evidence from the Hadeeth about the matter. Then gently suggest that "Shouldn't be doing it like our Prophet SallAllahu Alleihi Wasallam did ?"

Do not let it to get in a situation, in which your parents get defensive and start feeling hurt. If you prove it to them gradually that this is what the Rasool SallAllahu Alleihi Wasallam, then Insha'Allah they would listen to you and think of adopting it.

And make dua, akhi. :)
