It is narrated from Anas ibn Malik [RA] that the Prophet [SAWS] said,
"When Allah wants good for his slave, He hastens for him punishment in the dunya. And when Allah wants bad for his slave, He delays his punishment due to his sins until the slave comes with his sins intact on the Day of Judgment."
[Reported in Tirmidhi]
Vocabulary from the Hadith:
- الْخَيْرَ means good. It is the opposite of الشَّرَّ which means evil.
- عَجَّلَ means to hasten something, to hurry up something. It is the opposite of أَمْسَكَ which means to delay something, to withhold something.
- الْعُقُوبَةَ has many meanings, some which are: punishment, test, trials.
- وافَى means to come, to arrive but with an element of surprise.
Lessons
- "When Allah wants good for his slave, He hastens for him punishment in the dunya..." This is to remove the sins from the person in this worldly life so that when he/she dies and is resurrected on the Day of Judgment, Allah's forgiveness and His paradise are waiting for him/her.
- "And when Allah wants bad for his slave, He delays his punishment due to his sins..." This is to increase the punishment for the disobedient person on the Day of Judgment and also to repay any good deeds that he/she may have done in this worldly life because Allah is the most Just.
- "...until the slave comes with his sins intact on the Day of Judgment." This resurrection on the Day of Judgment, as mentioned in the vocabulary of the hadith, has an element of surprise to it. So the sinner will come with his/her sins intact, in a state of surprise at the resurrection and also surprised at the large volume of his/her sins. This is to compound the punishment. May Allah protect us from such an end.
- "Those who when afflicted with calamity, say: 'Truly! To Allah we belong and truly to Him we shall return.' They are those who receive the blessings from their Lord and His mercy, and it is they who are guided". [2:156:157]
