Asalaam Alaykum, my brothers/sisters

اسلام عليكم
As my name suggests, I am a new Muslim. Al-Hamdu Allah, for I have become a Muslim just yesterday. I converted from Christianity. Since I converted after Ramadan, I don't have to fast. But today, I'm fasting just as Sunnah.

I have a 2 questions, however:
1) I have ordered a Qur'an, but it hasn't reached my house yet. So can I say my own Du'a until it comes (like asking God for forgiveness, more fiath, etc.)?

2) My family isn't Muslim but Christian. My mother saw me praying and keeps telling me to "stop, you're not a Muslim". Do I have to tell her? If not, how can I hide myself when I pray? If so, how can I tell her?

3) Is it true that I can't eat pork? If so, what other foods can I not eat?

Thank you for reading this post, answering my questions, and welcoming me to Islam. Allahu Akbar.

<3rd>About foods

Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“Say (O Muhammad): I find not in that which has been revealed to me anything forbidden to be eaten by one who wishes to eat it, unless it be Maytah (a dead animal) or blood poured forth (by slaughtering or the like), or the flesh of swine (pork); for that surely, is impure or impious (unlawful) meat (of an animal) which is slaughtered as a sacrifice for others than Allaah (or has been slaughtered for idols, or on which Allaah’s Name has not been mentioned while slaughtering). But whosoever is forced by necessity without wilful disobedience, nor transgressing due limits; (for him) certainly, your Lord is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful

I can't answer yet for the first one (honestly I need that answer too, since I am not good with memorization I am struggling with the Qur'an recitation in arabic after reciting the first Sura.

But the other two I can give you some of my opinions and ideas on. First it is best to pray behind closed and locked doors for now so you aren't disturbed and don't shock your family too heavily. Also you should slowly introduce them to Islam, show them the good things in it (like the requirement that all Muslims [who are able to afford it and aren't poor themselves] give charity to those less fortunate then them) and attempt to show that not all Muslims are what you see on the tv news.

For foods, in terms of meat, I think islamicfajr pretty much spelled out what is haraam (forbidden) for you to eat. Halal meat (food which Allah's name has been recited while slaughtering the animal and making sure that animal dies with as little pain as possible) is allowed, but it may be hard for you to aquire some due to your situation and Allah knows our situation and is forgiving. Insha'Allah we shall be able to practice completely once we are away from our disbelieving families or *even better* they decide to accept the truth of Islam themselves and become Muslim after viewing our behavior.

wa alaykum salam,

Welcome Brother!! :) may Allah bless you!! MashaAllah.
I have a 2 questions, however:

You asked 3, but we dont mind ;) ask as many as you wish.

1) I have ordered a Qur'an, but it hasn't reached my house yet. So can I say my own Du'a until it comes (like asking God for forgiveness, more fiath, etc.)?

You can make Dua as much as you want. You can ask Allah for help whenever you wish.

The Quran is Allah's revealed book to all mankind. It is a mercy and guidance for everyone. It does have verses which can be read as Dua (prayers).

Reading the Quran is beneficial and important for all Muslims and it gives the reader uncountable and immense rewards.

The Prophet :saw: said:

"There is no envy (acceptable) except in two (cases): a person whom Allah has given the Qur'an and recites it throughout the night and throughout the day. And a person whom Allah has given wealth, that he gives out throughout the night and throghout the day." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

However, actual praying and asking help from God are seperate from the reading of the noble Quran.

Before our obligatory daily prayers, you must learn how to do the ablution (Wudhu), which is the ritual cleansing. After that, you do the 5 obligatory prayers.
Article: How To Perform Wudhu

Description of the Wudhu (ablution)

We have 5 obligatory prayers which are said in Arabic. This is in keeping to the exact same words our blessed Prophet read them in. These prayers must be done in Arabic. You can read and learn the meanings of what you say. It is not too difficult, Allah will forgive any shortfall in memory or inability to speak Arabic for he is the most merciful. And Islam is easy! so dont worry, we your Muslim brothers and sisters will help you. Step By Step Guide to the Prayer

Apart from these prayers we also have something called Dua. Which is when we put our hands together, palms facing up. We can ask Allah for anything in that prayer. We can do these prayers in any language that we want. Whether you do your prayer in English, Arabic, Urdu, Hebrew, it matters not. What matters is that you are asking Allah for help and guidance. May Allah bless you!

On the authority of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) say: Allah the Almighty said:

O son of Adam, so long as you call upon Me and ask of Me, I shall forgive you for what you have done, and I shall not mind. O son of Adam, were your sins to reach the clouds of the sky and were you then to ask forgiveness of Me, I would forgive you. O son of Adam, were you to come to Me with sins nearly as great as the earth and were you then to face Me, ascribing no partner to Me, I would bring you forgiveness nearly as great at it. It was related by at-Tirmidhi (also by Ahmad ibn Hanbal). Its chain of authorities is sound.

Allah listens to all his Ibaad (Slaves). We pray and ask for forgiveness, guidance, mercy and help from Allah alone. No other can aid us except him. May Allah accept your prayers my dear beloved brother! and all of our prayers too. I ask Allah to make it easy for you and to bring us all close to Islam and bring us as Muslims close.

2) My family isn't Muslim but Christian. My mother saw me praying and keeps telling me to "stop, you're not a Muslim". Do I have to tell her? If not, how can I hide myself when I pray? If so, how can I tell her?

If you have said your shahada and believe in it with your heart, you have said it upon your tongue, your actions must also follow from that. To live like a Muslim. That is to show your Islam, to pray, to fast and do the actions ordained by God.

However, Islam is the religion of ease and it is not essential that your family or other people know, particularly if this is a cause for trouble or harm. May Allah make it easy for you to let your family know about your decisions.

Your becoming Muslim does not effect your relationship with your mother or the rest of your family. It strengthens it. For the respect and love to the mother and the father is mentioned in the Quran. The mother has a very high status in Islam. You must always be kind to her, you must listen and obey your parents in everything they demand from you except when it comes to our beautiful Deen (Religion). We can never obey any human in disobeying our Lord. We can not listen to our parents if they tell us to do something against Islam.

3) Is it true that I can't eat pork? If so, what other foods can I not eat?

All pork is forbidden. It is mentioned in the Quran that it is forbidden.

Our Lord, Allah the most high, the most merciful mentions in Surah Baqarah: (2: 173)

He has forbidden you only the Maytatah (dead animals), and blood, and the flesh of swine, and that which is slaughtered as a sacrifice for others than Allâh (or has been slaughtered for idols, etc., on which Allâh's Name has not been mentioned while slaughtering). But if one is forced by necessity without wilful disobedience nor transgressing due limits, then there is no sin on him. Truly, Allâh is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

So, Pork is forbidden (the Bible also mentions that Pork is forbidden, but Christians do not follow it anymore!).

All meat that is not sacrificed with the name of Allah is forbidden. So lamb, beef, chicken is forbidden if it is not Halal. Halal meat is meat which is sacrificed by a Muslim butcher who says the name of Allah when he sacrifices it.

Fish is allowed, the things from the sea such as fish, crab meat etc is allowed. There is no need to sacrifice fish and you can buy from ordinary supermarket.

If you wish to buy chicken, lamb or beef. You can find halal (allowed) meat in specialised Halal meat shops. these can be found in Muslim neighbourhoods of most major cities. You can ask at a Mosque inshaAllah, and they can tell you.

Any other questions my dear brother? we are here to help :)

Brother Argus. Assalamu Alaykum.

The Prophet :saw: said:

"Such a person as recites the Quran and masters it by heart, will be with the noble righteous scribes (in Heaven). And such a person exerts himself to learn the Quran by heart, and recites it with great difficulty, will have a double reward." [Al-Bukhari]
If you find difficulty in reading or memorising the Quran, Allah will give you two rewards. Islam is easy dear brother,

"Allah intends for you ease, and does not want to make things difficult for you" [2:185];

"Verily there has come unto you a Messenger from amongst yourselves, it grieves him that you should suffer any difficulty, he is anxious for you, for the believers he is full of pity and merciful" [10:128]

Such easiness is well explained in the hadeeth reported by Abu Hurairah, radiya Allahu 'anhu, that the Prophet, salla Allaahu 'alaihe wasallam, said, "Religion is easy..." [Bukhari], he also said; "The best of your religion, is the easiest." [Ahmad]

InshaAllah with time and practise your ability to learn the prayers and Islam will get better and will flowwww. There is no need to worry, we do the best we can. We do not overburden ourselves, because we must remember that Islam is a religion of ease. Allah will bless you and reward you for your struggle in learning. We are always learning, there is not one person on this earth who is not learning!! From the day we are born to the day we are laid to rest.

May Allah give us all guidance and increase our knowledge of Islam, keep us sincere, humble and make us among the most kind and noble of his creation. Ameen!

Assalam alaykum to you both.

Thank you all for answering my questions. I think I may be a Muslim forever, this religion is like a way of life rather than slavery (as I once believed). Also, it was a typo, I meant 3 :)

I live in the U.S.A.

My conversion story: from Christianity to Islam to Atheism to Christianity to Atheism to Christianity to Atheism to Islam (sic)
Well, I was born into a Christian family, so I was a Christian from birth.

Fast forward a few years, and when I was in 3rd grade (I'm a young person), 9/11 happened. I was a very smart child (still am), and I decided to find who commited the horrible acts.

What I read was that "A group of Muslims commited this crime". I read various things, from killing them all to nuking the Middle East. This led to my extreme hatred towards Muslims that lasted for many years.

When I was 7 I was exposed to the "Jehovah's Witnesses" (a cult of Christianity, shunned by all Christians).

I was indoctrinated into that cult for 4 years. When I was 11, I learned that Christians shunned it from my summer camp (which is Christian).

I left the Jehovah's Witnesses, much to the dismay of my cousin. He yelled at me, saying that I "don't care about God" but rather "myself", and he called me selfish.

This is when I first started questioning Christianity. Some questions were relating to the trinity and Jehovah's Witnesses. The Jehovah's Witnesses questions were never answered, and the best answer for the trinity questions were that "it is a mystery of God" (basically, although there were more words).

On Christmas Day in 2004, my favorite uncle died. That was when I got extremely angry at Yahweh and 'joined' (more like being a rebel by joining) Islam.

That lasted for a day (literally), and I became Atheist. Overtime, I became Agnostic, and finally turned to Christianity.

Fast forward to when I was 11, a bunch of Christians on a Christian forum thought I was lying about my age (which I shouldn't have told anyway). So I got angry and kept trying to prove it to them, and they continued to think I lied. Another bad encounter with Christianity which led me to Atheism.

I became Agnostic and then turned to Christianity again because of my summer camp. This lasted for a while. It lasted for a year.

I decided to join a church (St. Andrew's Episcopal Church) and shunned questions from my mind. Questions such as "why are there so many divisions within Christianity?" and "why do Christians take the Bible literally in some places and non-literally in other places?".

I got baptized at that church (June 4th of this year). Then, I learned that my favorite priest, the man who baptized me, was going to leave. After summer camp, I didn't go back to that church. I turned Atheist again.

I turned Christian at my summer camp for a week, then turned back to Atheism.

I started researching Islam, and I knew so much about it that when we began studying it in school, it was as if they were talking about "how to water plants".

I started learning Arabic because of the pictures of Mecca I saw (which made me want to go to the Middle East). I spoke some to kids in my school, and they joked that I should become Muslim.

Of course, they were joking. Everytime they saw me in the halls, they would ask me where southeast was so I could pray. They would make fun of everything Muslim and call me a terrorist. I played along until Friday of last week.

I was seriously considering Islam for the past month, but I never converted. I saw a video of a reporter who was Muslim go to Mecca to preform the Hajj. That drew me in like a magnet. On Friday of last week, I learned of the Qur'an and how it was so simple, just like the "religion" (way of life, rather) of Islam.

I then saw "Texans becoming Muslims" on I-Am-Bored.com. And when the man said "Islam is everything I wanted Christianity to be", I could relate to that statement.

I stated the Shahadah that morning (it was 12:30 AM).

I learned how to pray, and I prayed the same day (yesterday).

Not as interesting as other conversions stories, but that's how mine goes. Obviously, ما شاء الله is the most true statement when it comes to this. Allah has continued to call me to Islam, and I finally answered the call.

Alhamdulillah, Allah has guided you to the haqq (truth), may he make you, and all of us, firm upon this deen and worshipping him alone, Ameen.

Insha Allah try and increase your eemaan and knowledge, by starting off with learning about Tawheed (the oneness of Allah) you can advance onto other parts of the deen once you have a firm understanding of this insha Allah. Dont worry, take your time, there is so much to learn masha'Allah.

Also little advice, When you feel comfortable, then tell your parents insha Allah, Just before I became muslim I prepared my mum for it, and told her I was thinking of becoming muslim, so when Id actually took my shahada in a way she was a bit shocked, as she probably didnt think I was actually that serious about it, (Id gone through a few different fads and phases in my teenage years!) but Ive found Alhamdulillah that I havent realy had any opposition from my family regarding my reversion, I slowly started to cover more, and my mum did speak out when i told her i was wearing the niqaab(face veil) and she said she didnt want me to wear it, and she wouldnt go out with me while I had it on, but I clearly explained to her this was part of my religion, and something which I had started to wear and was going to continue wearing it, and that was that, Alhamdulillah she didnt put up a fuss after that.
My advice also is keep firm upon what you believe, and dont make compromises, as I have found ,and from speaking to friends who are also reverts, that when you back down on something, they immediately notice it, and try to take advantage of that, making it harder for you in the long run. Insha Allah they will normally begin to have more respect for you when they see you sticking firmly to your religion.

May Allah make it easy for you, ameen.

Take care

Mashallah brother, you have embraced Islam. From what you have said, I assume you are 13. Seems to be a wonderful age for discovering things. I hope that Allah helps you in all your ways, along the path of riteousness and that you will be able to over come all your difficulties, Inshallah.

Since you are young, I suppose that you would have to deal with your parents differently, since you are still living under thier care. You might try to show them the beauty of Islam. Many times older people dislike being told straight out that what they are doing is wrong so you might try to maybe leave phamplets or printouts about Islam lying around. Or you could demonstrate the values Islam puts on a person like being obidient towards parents, cleaness, patience, and calmness. Inshallah, slowly you will be able to show them the true beauty of Islam.

Before you try real dawah though, learn as much as you can about Islam, because you will need it in order refute allegations and such.
AND MOSTLY Make DUA... DUA IS THE WEAPON OF THE BELIEVER.

May Allah help us all learn more about his deen. Ameen.
