I think what you are going through is what many Muslims -- even good ones – experience. However, be cautious against complacence. Our nafs has a leaning towards the evil, and Satan doesn’t do anything except whispering into the same nafs more evil so that it continues to drift away from the right path towards what is wrong. In other words, the evil thoughts that come to your mind are indeed from Satan which appeal to your nafs.

Your trial is to make your earnest attempt to ensure that you don’t allow what Satan whispers into your heart to become a permanent part of your nafs. The crucial thing is that you should always regret and seek forgiveness from the Almighty after you had a bad thought. Keep doing istighfar in your prayers and otherwise too. Don’t plan anything bad, evil when you are in the normal frame of mind. Try to remain in a state of ablution (wudhu) for as long as is possible.

Be sure that this world is a trial between Satan and our nafs on the hand and our determination to defeat them on the other. Satan and our nafs won’t die so long as we live in this world. However, we can subjugate and defeat them over long periods of time. On each occasion when we feel that we have overcome their influence, they are going to do their best to stage a comeback. So be vigilant against them by
i) saying your prayers regularly,
ii) remembering Allah as much as possible, especially through reading the Qur’an and understanding it,
iii) staying in the company of good people, and
iv) staying in a state of wudhu.

Invocations against the Devil and his whisperings

أَعـوذُ بِاللهِ مِنَ الشَّيْـطانِ الرَّجيـم

141. Aûdhu bi-l-lâhi mina sh-shaytâni r-rajîm.

Seeking refuge with Allah against Satan the Outcast. "[I seek refuge with Allaah from the Evil One, the Rejected]"

Reference: Abu Dawud 1/206, At-Tirmithi. See also Al-Albani, Sahih At-Tirmithi 1/77, and Surat Al-Mu'minun, 23:98-9.

142. The call to prayer - 'Adhdhaan

Reference: Muslim 1/291, Al-Bukhari 1/151.

143. Recitation of the Qur'an and authentic texts of Allah's remembrance (Dhikr) and supplications (Ad-du'aa`)

Reference: "Do not turn your homes into graveyards, surely the Devil flees from the house in which Surat Al-Baqarah is read," Muslim 1/539. The Devil is also driven out by the invocations for morning and evening, those that are said before sleeping and upon waking up, those for entering and leaving the house, including those for entering and leaving the mosque, and by many other authentic invocations taught to us by the Prophet (SAW) such as the reading of 'Ayatul-Kursi, (Al-Baqarah 2:255), and the last two 'Ayat of Surat Al-Baqarah before going to sleep. Whoever says: "There is none worthy of worship but Allah alone, Who has no partner, His is the dominion and His is the praise, and he is Able to do all things," one hundred times, it will be a protection for him from the Devil throughout the day.'

congratulations, you are increasing in eman. Allah advises us that we will be tested according to our level.

[Saheeh_International] You will surely be tested in your possessions and in yourselves. And you will surely hear from those who were given the Scripture before you and from those who associate others with Allah much abuse. But if you are patient and fear Allah - indeed, that is of the matters [worthy] of determination.[3:186]

about accountability:

[Saheeh_International] Allah does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity. It will have [the consequence of] what [good] it has gained, and it will bear [the consequence of] what [evil] it has earned. "Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred. Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no ability to bear. And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy upon us. You are our protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people."[2:286]

as your Eman grows so would your tests. The shaytan is very busy and his goal is that.

:sl:

In the name of Allah, Most Compassionate, Most Merciful,

Having doubts in Allah Almighty is perfectly natural and one should avoid being too concerned about them. In fact, doubts and evil thoughts are a sign of one’s faith.

Sayyiduna Abu Haraira (Allah be pleased with him) narrates that once a group of people came to the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) and asked: “We experience such evil thoughts that it is impossible to bring them on our lips”. The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) said: “Do you really experience these thoughts? Yes, they replied. The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) said: “They are clear signs of faith”. (Sahih Muslim).

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (Allah have mercy on him) narrates that a Companion came to the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) and asked: “Sometimes I experience such thoughts that I would rather be reduced to charcoal than get them on my lips” (meaning that to speak of these thoughts was worse than burning in fire, m). The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) said: “All praise is to Allah who restricted the devil’s designs to mere evil promptings”. (Sunan Abu Dawud,)

The above two narrations Cleary show that it is not unusual to have these evil thoughts neither is one more sinful or evil due to them. Even some Companions of the blessed Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) received these thoughts, as we have seen in the above narrations.

Therefore, one should not be worried on their account or feel sad and deterred, for these thoughts are signs of faith.

Some scholars have explained this by saying that a robber or thief only strikes at a place where he knows that there is wealth or money. He would not break into a place where there is no wealth. Similarly, when the devil (shaytan) whispers and puts these evil thoughts into anyone’s heart, then this shows that this person has the wealth of faith (iman) in his heart. If there was no wealth in that heart, Shaytan would have never entered it, thus one should not worry about these evil thoughts.

No sin on mere thoughts

It should also remember that one is not accountable for the evil thoughts that occur in the mind and heart as long as they remain thoughts.

Sayyiduna Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) said:

“Verily Allah forgives my Ummah for the evil thoughts that occur in their hearts until they don’t say it verbally or act upon it”. (Sahih al-Bukhari & Sahih Muslim).

Therefore, one does not come out of the fold of Islam due to experiencing these evil thoughts, neither is there any sin., as long as one remains a believer with his heart, mouth and action.

What to do

When experiencing evil thoughts one should do the following:

1) Do not be worried about them, rather one should be happy, for the occurring of evil thoughts is a sign of faith. A saint said: “Shaytan can not tolerate a believer being happy, thus when he sees him being happy for receiving these thoughts, he stops from whispering them.

2) When these thoughts come, one should occupy oneself with something else. These thoughts will not disappear by simply desiring them to go, rather, one should get busy in some work or task.

3) One should seek Allah’s protection and refuge from the devil. Sayyiduna Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) said:

“The devil (shaytan) comes to one of you and says: “Who created this? Who created that? Until he says: “Who created your Lord?” When one experiences this, one should seek Allah’s refuge and stop the matter there”. (Sahih al-Bukhari & Sahih Muslim).

The following verse of Surah al-mu’minun may be beneficial:

“Rabbi inni a’uzu bika min hamazat ashayatin wa a’uzu bika rabbi an yahdurun”

Trans: O my Lord! I seek your protection from the instigations of devils and I also seek your protection from that they (ever) come to me.

And Allah knows best

Sheikh Muhammad ibn Adam al-Kawthari

Also whenever you get these kinds of thoughts think to yourself "shaythan is just trying to mess with my head and confuse me and i won't let him" and then repeat the following: "A'udhu billaahi minashaythaanirajeem", Also: "La hawla Walaa Quwatha illah billah hil 'aliyyil adheem".

Then think of Almighty Allah and glorify him. You can repeat the third and fourth kalima and also "Subhanallah", "Alhamdulillah" and "Allahu Akbar".

Then everything will be fine sister. Its just shaythan trying to confuse you so block him out by remembering and glorifying Allah. Also recite as much of the Qur'an as you can along with its meaning so that you can understand the Qur'an and go along to talks and learn as much about Islam as you can because knowledge is extremely important.

If you’re having these bad thought (Satanic whispers), ask yourself, WHY are YOU having them and why not a bad Muslim? Why you? You are such a good Muslim, praying 5 times and even more, fasting, giving charity, reading Qur’an, etc, Why you?

Answer: Imagine a thief, would a thief break into a house without gold or a house with gold?

Similarly, Shaytan breaks into the heart and mind of a person that possess Iman (Faith)!

As for the unbeliever, Shaytan leaves him alone to wander in the darkness, Shaytan knows very well that this man(doesn't have iman) is already messed up!

We have to keep in mind, IT IS ALL SHAYTANS WHISPERINGS.
You have to know that it is Shaytan otherwise he is slowly winning this battle, you have to know 100% that it is Shaytan, not 50%,,,, but 1 0 0 %!!!

Shaytan, the one with a mission, your biggest enemy!!!!!

To overcome Shaytan, you have to know that he is your biggest enemy, not your second biggest, but your B I G G E S T!!!!!!

we see that Shaytan will never give up trying to misguide us, but Allah (The giver of mercy, the merciful) will neither stop forgiving us if we ask his forgiveness, that is, as long as our souls are in our bodies!

Just a simple solution for this troublesome issue is to seek refuge in Allah away from Satan the accursed!

“Audzhu Billahi Mina Shaytan Irajeem”

I take refuge in Allah from the accursed devil temptation ..
