عن أبي هريرة - رضي الله عنه - قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم:
" المَرْءُ عَلى دِيْنِ خَلِيلِهِ ، فَلْيَنْظُرْ أَحَدُكُمْ مَنْ يخالل "
أخرجه أحمد في المسند, حسنة الألباني
It is narrated from Abu Huraira that the Prophet [SAWS] said,
"A man follows the religion/lifestyle of his close friend, so let each of you be very careful about whom he befriends."
[Narrated by Imam Ahmad, graded as Hasan by Shaikh Al-Albani]
Vocabulary from the Hadith
المرء - person
دِيْنِ - religion, ways, lifestyle
خليل - close friend, companion. Allah says in the Qur'an, "And Allah took Ibrahim as a Khalil" [4:125]
يَنْظُرْ (in the past tense: نظر) - to look,to pay attentions to something (amongst many other meanings). In the Hadith, it means to carefully look at.
Lessons from the Hadith
- Our friends influence our lifestyle. Bad company takes a person away from the Allah, and in the worst case, to the fire of hell. In the Qur'an, Allah mentions:
"The Day that the wrong-doer will bite at his hands, he will say, "Oh! would that I had taken a (straight) path with the Messenger! Ah! woe is me! Would that I had never taken such a one for a friend! He did lead me astray from the Message (of Allah) after it had come to me! Ah! the Satan is but a traitor to man!" [25:27-29]
- On the other hand, good company takes a person closer to Allah and keeps him/her steadfast in the face of difficulties.
