Hello everyone,

I'm here to perhaps learn a bit more about Islam and hear from Muslims in addition to the few I know now.

I'm a 22 yr. old male, studying at college in Madison, Wisconsin - U.S. I am very undecided about my religion right now.

I was baptized and raised as a Christian but was never too happy about some of the beliefs and I never really seem to fit.

Within the past few years, I've looked into Buddhism and have found it to be very relaxing and good for the mind, but I do believe in one god and hence it too is not fitting for me.

I am looking into Islam and am thinking about conversion. Some of this is because my 'girlfriend' is a Muslim and I really respect her discipline and faith. Also, I simply feel that the religion I was brought up with was not right or right for me and Buddhism, the other main religion I've investigated was not a proper fit as well since I am surely monotheistic.

I'd appreciate any thoughts you all might have.

Thank you,
David

Hello and welcome David to TTI,

Very happy to know that you are interested in Islam. You will Insha'Allah (God Willing) find lots of useful stuff here (videos and discussions/suggestions). Please feel free to ask any general or particular questions thay you may have.

I would suggest that in your quest you try to make use of all avenues of learning, which include: reading, observing and interacting. These when taken in parallel provide strong stimuli for the mind, the heart and the soul.

1. Quran is the word of God revealed to humanity for the sake of its guidance. I hope you already have a copy of the Quran with you. Read carefully what God says about why He created us and how we can find peace in our lives.

2. Try visiting a Muslim community center in your area (like a Mosque). See how the different tenants of Islam give purpose and direction to life. See how the love of one God puts one at ease with oneself.

3. Try interacting with people who have converted to Islam, see how their lives changed, see how faith has become of central importance to them.

Hope this is of some help insha'Allah. A nice collection of relevant material is also available on the thread http://www.turntoislam.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9584

Warm Wishes,
Your Brother

Hello David,

Welcome to this forum. You've taken the right step by trying to find Muslims and asking them about their religion, instead of going to non Muslims for this information.

While there are some non Muslims who do present an objective view about Islam, most do not. I'm pretty sure you're well aware of the overwhelming negative image of Islam in the Western media.

To begin with, I advise you to get a good translation of the meanings of the Qur'an. We Muslims believe that the Qur'an [i.e. in its the original Arabic language] is literally the Word of God Almighty. Although a translation of its meanings does not show its miraculous linguistic style, many non Arabic speakers are still profoundly moved when they read a translation of its meanings.

I recommend buying one [or even both] of the following translations:

1- The Holy Qur-an: English Translation of the Meanings and Commentary (Leather Bound).

http://www.amazon.com/Holy-Qur-Tran...5559847?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1174277811&sr=1-1

2- The Qur'an (Arabic Text with Corresponding English Meanings) (Leather Bound)

ISBN: 9960792633

http://www.amazon.com/Quran-Arabic-...5559847?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1174277929&sr=1-2

I also recommend that you read the following books about basic concepts in the Islamic Creed. Both were written by Dr. Bilal Philips:

The Fundamentals of Tawheed [Islamic Monotheism]

Salvation Through Repentance

I hope you all the best David.

Hello again David,

I'd also like to add that many non Muslims confuse practising Muslims with being boring and not liking to have fun.

Muslims should also have fun and laugh, but we must never do so at the expense of displeasing God Almighty. There are boundaries that must be respected.

Please watch the following video by Baba Ali. He's a convert to Islam, and he explains the topic of "Culture vs. Islam". I think you'll find his style "interesting" to say the least!

Hi David...
Most welcome to TTI.
I hope you would find many usefull article and videos here.
And fell free to ask any question you may have.
Firstly I want you to know that, if you beleive One God,You should beleive one religion as well. How can One God send many different religion,so if exsist more than one religion in the world, means some of them was changed.Allah sent us only one religion from the begining was Islam.Somehow they were changed and everytime when they changed something in religion Allah sent again to remind.Allah sent them trough Prophets, If he send before trough Jesus,Mosa,Abraham,Jacop, Issac (p.b.u.all of them) and so on, why we should be so suprised if He send the last one trough Mohammad (p.b.u.h).There will be no more.Mohammed(p.b.u.h) was the last circle of the Prophet's chain to tell the good news to whom are beleive and to warn who doesnt beleive as all Prophets (p.b.u.all of them) did before. He was the last sing to declare that the day of judgment is alrady verry close and there will be sent no more both religion and Prophet as Allah said in the Holly Qoran that Qoran was sent by Allah and He will protect it....
So If you are worried about your eternal life search the religions as you do now, searc also Islam, because if you search with an open heart, for sure you also can see that Islam is a way to live in peace in this world and after death. It is a way of social life and include complately a system in it.
So, i am sorry for my bad english, if did somethin wrong with my explanation.May Allah forgive me.
Stay keep in touch and enjoy staying here.
May Allah guide you and your family to the right path.
Selam
