Praise be to Allaah.

It is not permissible to cheat in exams, because of the general meaning of the evidence that forbids cheating, which includes cheating (or deceiving) in buying and selling, in giving advice, in contracts and treaties, in matters of trust, in school and university exams, and so on, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The one who cheats (or deceives) us is not one of us.” Narrated by Muslim (101).

Rest of ruling here...http://www.islam-qa.com/en/ref/95776/cheating

Seems pretty clear to me..if you cheat you are making yourself outside the ummah. So yeah, I think it falls under a major sin.

jazakAllah sister shyhijabi, i was going to post the same hadeeth. yes providing someone with answers in an exam is equally as bad. it is sad to see that in the arab world, there is a lot of cheating with respects to examinations, not only do the students copy from one another during an exam but they also ask the teacher for answers. how will Allah give victory to the Muslims if they are busy in such a sin?

 yaani this is something very serious..many students cheat as there is nothing wrong.. :(...

Thank you soo much sister :)..barakallah fik...jazakallah khair... May Allah grant you jannat firdous - Ameen

Salaamu 'alaikkum, its quite sad to see this in our society, and it is seen as something normal. Sometimes I am scared of even talking to some brothers before exams, incase they are discussing about the questions that came up in the exam (like we have two groups who does the exams, and the first group does it first and we do it next, so students come outside after their exam and on their way tell the second group guys the answers). But yeah I guess it is our job to remind ourselves first and our brothers regarding this matter.

Yes, cheating is a big sin. I don't know why students don't care about it too much. During my student days, many people asked me to tell them the answers. I just didn't listen, if they asked during the exam. If they asked me even before the exam started to show my copy to them from time to time, I'd say my writing is so horrible you wouldn't understand a word.

One can find it on the AYAH OF THE DAY

(And those who do not bear witness to falsehood,) refers to giving false testimony, which means lying deliberately to someone else. It was recorded in the Two Sahihs that Abu Bakrah said, "The Messenger of Allah said three times:

«أَلَا أُنَبِّئُكُمْ بِأَكْبَرِ الْكَبَائِرِ؟»

(Shall I not tell you of the greatest of major sins) We said, "Of course, O Messenger of Allah.'' The Messenger of Allah said:

«الشِّرْكُ بِاللهِ وَعُقُوقُ الْوَالِدَيْن»

(Associating others in worship with Allah and disobeying one's parents.) He was lying down, then he sat up and added:

«أَلَا وَقَوْلُ الزُّورِ، أَلَا وَشَهَادَةُ الزُّور»

(Beware false speech, and bearing witness to falsehood.) and he kept repeating it until we thought, would that he would stop.'' From the context it seems that what is meant by those who do not bear witness to falsehood is those who do not attend it or are not present when it happens. Allah says:

(and if they pass by some evil play or evil talk, they pass by it with dignity.) They do not attend where falsehood occurs, and if it so happens that they pass by it, they do not let it contaminate them in the slightest. Allah says:

(they pass by it with dignity.)

Here's an idea:

My way of writing changed during an exam, where I pretty much shielded my paper the whole time. Like I put my arm and hand in such a way, that nobody could really see unless I removed and let them see. I got laughed at about it a few times that I hide my paper so well, but I didn't mind, at least they weren't looking at my paper!
