First I would like to apologize, as I know this is most likely a topic that comes up often, but please bear with me. I did search the forum but wasn't able to find a proper response.
I would like clarification of "Engagement" within the principles of Islam.
From my understanding there is no such thing as what we know of a "traditional engagement" these days, but more of a verbal agreement between the two sides until Nikka. During this period of engagement the same rules (non-mehram) apply as they always before Nikka, correct?
Is there an actual procedure to all of this? As if you are interested in person can you let them know of your intent, and if they agree, ask to speak to their wali to take steps forward?
Or can you only get permission and go through the Wali?
