Does Islam merely disapprove of such in public ? Or is such forbidden at all times? Is it ok for a woman to be beautiful so long as she does not display such in public ?

Beautifying yourself is forbidden for others to see. BUT if you wear make up for "special reasons" its ok. I wear base in public because I have horrible acne scares and I am totally embarrassed by it and get stares. I was told its ok to cover it if it makes me feel that way.

asaalamu alaikum

I do not see anything wrong in wearing makeup, jewelry, perfume in public. Yes, you do it in the house for your husband, but what about how you feel about yourself. I personally feel uncomfortable leaving my house without jewelry or perfume, I dont wear makeup, but it makes me feel good about myself. I am happily married and I have no complaints about our marriage, but I also like myself and want to look and feel good for myself.

Hello sisters,

I have attached a fatwa below related to women wearing perfume in public, which is forbidden if you are around alien men. Perfume is a generally a seductive smell, regardless of whether or not you are aware that you are attracting members of the opposite sex by using it.

Fatwa No. : 88084
Fatwa Title : Women wearing perfume smelled by alien men
Fatwa Date : 04 Jumaadaa Al-Uolaa 1425 / 22-06-2004
Question

My question is about perfume.

The prophet(s) said:" Any woman who puts on perfumes and goes pass some people to smell her perfumes, she is a Zaniah (whore)."

My question is what if the women works hard and she doesn't like to foul smelling? How about men, is it the same thing or no? And if so, please send me any proof or Hadith if there is one.

Fatwa

Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; and may His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions.

This Hadith was reported by Ahmad and Al Nasa’e from Abu Musa Al Ashari and its chain is good. It contains an evidence that it is forbidden for women to put on perfumes in public in presence of alien men and this rule is peculiar to females. So, it does not include males. However, it is understood from this Hadith that there is no objection that the woman puts on perfumes provided they are not redolent. So, we say to this sister that she can put on perfumes or deodorant that do not attract alien men as to remove any odor from her body.

Allah knows best.

As women we need to be careful about displaying our beauty in inappropriate ways, ways that can lead to attraction from the opposite sex. It is appropriate to display our beauty in our own homes, with our direct family members, and with our sisters in Islam. It is also encouraged to display our beauty to our husbands, it is good to protect and preserve it for this purpose.
