Crescent Moon and Star as Symbol for Islam

Salaam Alaikum,

I was reading a bit about the crescent moon and star as a symbol of Islam on Islam.about.com and it sounded like to me that this symbol is more historic than it is a religious representation. And I always thought it was kind of weird to see that as a symbol of Islam with all the discouragement of imagery and such. I'm just wondering what some other people's thoughts are of this? And if the information I was reading was incorrect: http://islam.about.com/od/history/a/crescent_moon.htm

Thanks!

Wasalaam.

I like the symbol. Some people say its haram and some say its not. I say its not haram . The prophet PBUH maybe didnt have any symbol to represent Islam it could be because an idea of a symbol wasnt brought up. I heard the Ottomans were the first to adopt this symbol after they invaded Constantinople, Which some say the symbol originated there. Maybe the symbol was meant to represent the Ottoman Empire not Islam....Thats my thought .But whatever the case is.. its now the symbol of Islam and I like it :)
