There is an article here that says only the male leaders of that Jewish tribe that started the attacks were killed, and the surviving Jews exaggerated the incident.

For more information regarding the incident Sharingan reported (jazaak Allaah khayr for the answer), please refer to the books of seerah by the scholars. The whole event was documented in detail, what happened and why. It is irritating to here many of the kuffaar justify their mass slaughters of people/tribes and then pick and rant about isolated incidents like this, which were a rarity! It further amazes me how treason is viewed in disgust whenever and wherever it be, but when it comes to Islaam, the violators are praised as heros and are portrayed as innocents! Lastly, I remember seeing this quote somewhere, which at the time, made me think,
