Factors that aid a dua being answered...
From Dua the weapon of the believer by Sheikh Yasir Qadhi
1. Sincerity
The famous scholar of the Hanbali madhab "It is said that the dua is never responded to quickly, except for the one who is sincere or the one who has been wronged."
Be conscious that Allah, and only Allah can give you what you want.
2. Be optimistic and think the best of Allah
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "Make dua to Allah and you are certain that you should be responded to."
A believer should realise that everything he desires is with Allah, therefore put your trust in Allah.
No one Loves you as much as Allah. No one cares about you as much as Allah.
Realise that Allah is All power, and All Merciful.
If Allah was to give everyone ALL that they desired, nothing would be diminished from His Kingdom. It is like the needle being dipped into the ocean and being taken out - does that effect the water of the ocean?
Allah can give you all that you want, and He can give all of creation all they that they want.
You must hope the best of Allah.
Umar (RA) said that "I am not worried about my dua being responded to or not, rather I am worried that will I make dua in the first place. Once I have been guided to make dua, then I know the response will come with it."
3. Doing good deeds
Anas ibn Malik "Verily dua is raised up to Allah by good deeds."
Of the best deeds? Fulfil the rights of the parents.
Look at the example of the the hadith of the 3 people trapped in the cave, the each made a dua, and mentioned a good deed that they had done. And one of them mentioned how good he was to his parents, and this moved the rock a little that was blocking the exit.
4. Make dua at all times
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "Whoever wishes that his dua is responded to in times of hardship, then let him increase in his dua at times of ease." Tirmidi.
5. Seeking forgiveness for sins
The one who realises that his sins might cause his dua not to be accepted, so he clears this path.
6. Have a humble appearance before Allah
This is a spiritual and physical appearance.
"O Allah I seek your refuge from knowledge that does not benefit, from a heart that does not become fearful, from a soul that is never satisfied, and from a dua that is not responded to." Muslim
