Full Bible or Half Bible?

I have a question - does anyone know the difference between which Christian sects use the complete Bible (as in Old and New Testaments) and which only use the New Testament? I was talking with someone (a devout Christian) about something that is in the Old Testament, and she said, "Well, that doesn't count anymore - Jesus changed that. The Old testament doesn't matter, only the new one does."

Now, if that is true, then the 10 commandments are in the Old testament - do they not count anymore for some Christians?

I know when I was younger and in Sunday school and catechism, we studied old and new testament (probably even more on the Old, because that seems to be where most of the "rules" are).

So, in order for me to be informed, is this a true division in Christianity? Or was the person I was talking to just wrong about her own religion?

Sister the copts and other middleeastern christians of old... its only the western "whites" who refused to acknowlede the old teachings which Jeusus did reaffirm as we know.

:salam2: i feel like the old testament was written off as pre-Jesus and that Jesus had reformed the old "eye for an eye" style to "turn the other cheek" for the new testament from my catholic school experience.... however, i am not schooled in the bible at all, one of the disappointments from catholic school, the religious education was quite pathetic! they chose the most whacko nuns to teach religion so i was just busy being in the midst of whatever mischief was going on in the class to drive the poor teacher even more crazy :( :wasalam:

all christian sects use both the OLD and NEW TESTAMENTS. however christians place more emphasis on the New Testament. it isn't uncommon for many christians to not know much about the old testament. the lack of interest of the old testament by christians really is a bad thing for them. for example: we muslims know that the quran is our holy book, but we also have come to the conclusion that we really can't practice islam without the sunnah. christians need the old testament because they use the old testament to validate their claims. that's why so many christians don't know if Jesus is God or the Son of God ( audhu billah ).

yes many christians will say that they are no longer under the " OLD " law, but is that really true? if they aren't under that law, why is it in their book? why are they mad when people want the tend commandments down from public places? after all the 10 commandments is from the Old testament. the answer is that they need the old testament. they say the bible is the inerrant word of God, so when they say they don't live by that law anymore, has God then changed His mind or is different?

the person you were talking to is wrong in their religion, but so are most christians. they really hate to read the OT because it is very very boring. also many of them are embarrassed about many of the sexual and violent verses of the OT.

JESUS in the NT says " i did not come to do away with the Law, but I have come to fulfil the LAW. " misguided christians have taken this to mean that the Law was incomplete without him. what was meant is that he was going to be the one that was actually able to keep all of the commandments without breaking them. there is no one here on earth that has kept all. he was showing the people that he could.

another note: Jesus read from the OT in the temples, obviously the OT was still relevant.
