Assalamu'alaikum!
Haj is a pilgrimage undertaken by millions of Muslims from around the world every year. Staying healthy and strong during the physically demanding journey is essential. Pilgrims should maintain their energy and physical strength during Haj and require certain safety precautions to be taken. Pilgrims would not want to be consumed by thoughts of discomfort and kept away from his or her primary focus of worship and prayers.
We spoke to Dr. Abdulrahman Al-Jehani, a doctor at Takhasusi Hospital, to enlighten our readers on tips for a healthy Haj. “There are three frequent health issues that pilgrims, or any person engaged in a physically demanding journey might face: infections, food poisoning and heatstrokes,” he said. “The Ministry of Health usually sends out health tips and guidelines to protect from infectious and communicable diseases,” he added.
Pilgrims should pay attention to maintaining personal hygiene and general cleanliness, when performing Haj. “Pilgrims should take good care of their physical hygiene by taking regular showers and washing hands constantly. They should use disposable tissues when needing to cough or to sneeze and then throw them away immediately. It would be even better if pilgrims used face-masks, especially in crowded places, and changed it often,” said Dr. Al-Jehani. “Keep a hand-sterilizer gel to use after coughing, sneezing, bathing, eating and basically touching anything. Paying attention to dental and oral cleanliness is important, in addition to changing clothes often and paying close attention to the cleanliness of your residence on a daily basis. One last thing, pilgrims should avoid spitting on the floor, since it is a hazardous source of infection,” he added.
One of the most common symptoms pilgrims are prone to is diarrhea caused by food poisoning. “Food might be undercooked or exposed for hours in unsafe conditions. These foods are prone to bacterial growth, which can lead to diarrhea, abdominal cramps and feeling weak,” said the doctor. “If you ate something and it tasted funny, if it looked or smelled weird or if you were simply in doubt, throw it out. You can resort to less risky food such as packaged cream cheese, bread, rice, potatoes, canned unopened food, and smoked meats,” said Dr. Al-Jehani.
It is recommended to adjust the diet if the pilgrim gets diarrhea and to avoid all fiber foods such as whole grains, beans, most fruits and vegetables. Fatty or fried food can cause an upset stomach and aggravate the diarrhea. What can you eat instead? White bread, boiled potatoes, white pasta, boiled eggs, bananas, peeled apples, and grilled lean meats such as grilled fish or chicken breast. “Clean fruits and vegetables very well before eating and cooked food should be eaten immediately after cooking, and when need be, it could be kept in the fridge. Avoid storing cooked food in buses for long when moving from one Haj site to another. Never purchase food from unknown sources and street ventures, this is one of the major triggers of food poisoning during Haj. Finally always check for the expiry date when buying canned foods and drinks,” said Dr. Al-Jehani.
In the wake of the recent MERS and Ebola, pilgrims are prone to infection coming from different places around the world. Pilgrims should take the right measures to prevent the infection. “People should wash their hands frequently, particularly before and after certain activities to remove germs and reduce the spread of illness and to sanitize their hands. Always remember to keep your hands away from three key parts of the body: eyes, nose and mouth. These are all easy ways that infection can reach the body,” said Dr. Al-Jehani. “Pilgrims should always check with their doctors before performing Haj if they need to take any injections, vitamins and medications. Pilgrims should also avoid kissing on the cheek, hugging, or shaking hands when greeting others,” he added.
Sunstrokes and heat exhaustions are also major concerns. “Pilgrims should load on fluids from water or fresh juices to help maintain adequate hydration. Water is always the best fluid, both hot weather and physical activity increase the need for water, so one needs to drink 8-10 glasses of water per day. You will notice the symptoms of heat exhaustion or sunstrokes — high body temperature, headache, dizziness, nausea, fatigue, thirst, and/or cramping of the abdominal and leg muscles,” said Dr. Al-Jehani. “One must avoid direct exposure to sunlight for long hours. If one experiences symptoms of chills, headache, dizziness, and nausea, move away to a cool area and seek medical help. Avoid exposure to the sun for long, and use a light colored umbrella when necessary,” he added.

MAKKAH: The government has again issued warnings that people without Haj permits would not be allowed to enter Makkah.
Brig. Gen. Khaled bin Nashat Al-Qahtani said that patrols have been deployed to prevent traffic and other violations at Makkah’s entry points. The aim is to ensure that pilgrims can perform their rituals safely, he said.
Al-Qahtani said there are royal directives that outline penalties for people failing to comply with Haj regulations. Citizens and expatriates transporting illegal pilgrims would be arrested and have their vehicles seized, he said.
Brig. Abdul Rahman Salem Al-Thamali, head of the Taif police and commander of a local monitoring and control checkpoint, said police officers would not discriminate between citizens and expatriates.
He said officers at various checkpoints would be responsible for inspecting cars on the way to Makkah. These include the Al-Mahamadia, Al-Hada, Akher and Al-Asher checkpoints.
Brig. Fahd Al-Madiehesh, commander of the temporary security checkpoints, said they would be spread out over 200 km on the roads leading to Makkah, including those running through valleys and farmland.
Brig. Ayed Al-Bugami, road security commander in the Makkah Region, said there are four locations on entry points to Makkah, including Al-Shumaisi, Al-Qaqiah and Al-Taniem.
He said the aim is to ensure smooth traffic flow on the roads leading to Makkah.
Col. Faisal Al-Jaied, commander of the Al-Taniem checkpoint, said all the officers at various checkpoints are working together to stop violators.

JEDDAH: Rain and thunderstorm are likely at the holy sites in the Kingdom during the current Haj season, the Presidency of Meteorology and Environment Protection (PME) has said.
Cumulus clouds and precipitation may range from medium to heavy, said PME head Abdulaziz Al-Jaswer said. The PME’s role is to monitor weather events around the clock and announce any extenuating circumstances, should the situation warrant, he said, adding that the PME has put in place a plan to address any weather events.
Sixteen bodies involved in dealing with extreme weather events receive information from the PME in a timely manner in order to implement their plans.
During his tour to monitor how the plan is being carried out in preparation for the pilgrimage this year, Jasser said the PME launched an electronic portal to host reports of weather predictions and environmental information.
Weather reports are transmitted directly to the command and control center in Mina, in addition to those involved with weather and environmental information.
He said the PME is working alongside other government agencies for Haj in line with directives of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and the Crown Prince to exert maximum efforts to serve the pilgrims this year.
The PME runs automatic stations in Makkah, Madinah and Jeddah on the Red Sea coast to monitor the weather, while experts and specialists will be working around the clock to monitor satellite images and weather radar throughout the Kingdom.
During his visit to the General Directorate of Analysis and Predictions, Jasser reiterated that preparations are ongoing with respect to the PME’s readiness to implement its plan at the holy sites.

PME: Warnings issued 24 hours before storm
file-16-Presidency-of-Meteorology-and-Environment.jpg

Published — Thursday 17 September 2015
JEDDAH: The Presidency of Meteorology and Environment (PME) has claimed it sent out warnings of strong winds and heavy rainfall 24 hours before last week’s storm that wreaked havoc over the holy sites, including toppling a crane at the Grand Mosque that caused the death of 111 people and injury to over 300 others.
Abdul Aziz bin Omar Al-Jasser, president of the PME, said: “We sent out warnings in this regard 24 hours (before the storm) and delivered the information to the competent bodies.”
He said this type of inclement weather normally occurs between summer and autumn. There was likely to be rain over Makkah, the holy sites and Taif, he was quoted as saying by a local publication on Wednesday.
Recently, Al-Jasser opened the Mina observatory which has begun to provide meteorological and environmental information every hour.
It would be operational throughout the year to serve Makkah, he said.
He also launched the electronic portal for weather reports during Haj. The information will be transmitted to the Command and Control center in Mina, which includes hourly predictions, and a 10-day forecast, on the weather for Mina, Muzdalifah, Makkah, Madinah and Jeddah.
The PME functions according to the orders of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman and the country’s leadership to ensure that pilgrims perform their rituals safely, he said.
The PME operates automatic observatory stations in Makkah, Madinah and Jeddah and along the Red Sea coast.
It also accesses information from satellites and weather radars, under the supervision of experts, he said.
The body also provides information on air quality and levels of pollution for agencies operating during the Haj, to ensure a safe environment for pilgrims.
The PME has also been criticized recently for failing to provide sufficient advance warning of last Tuesday’s sandstorm that blanketed Jeddah.
However, in response, it said the weather was too unpredictable to issue a definitive statement at the time.

JEDDAH: Suleiman Al-Hamdan, head of the Presidency of the General Authority for Civil Aviation, described services at Prince Mohammed bin Abdulaziz International Airport as a “major leap” forward for the city and airport services in the Kingdom.
During his visit to the new airport in Madinah, he said he was pleased with the high quality of service as guests arrive from all around the word to perform Haj.
As many pilgrims have expressed their satisfaction with the services provided at the new airport, Al-Hamdan described the airport as “modern” and something citizens and residents of Madinah can be proud of.
“We held several meetings with security and passport authorities to find ways to reduce the travel procedures for pilgrims, which sometimes only take on average 40 seconds at counters,” he said.
“This is a major achievement for all airports throughout the Kingdom.”
As for the authority’s aim to operate all airports in the Kingdom by outside investment companies, he said: “The authority is following up on the work of projects similar to the new airport in Madinah within the airport privatization plan.”
